Verse VI: “The Tase of Cigarettes”

December 2nd, 2007 by escaflownelover

The night was long, his touch was cold but I could feel his lips touch me. I couldn’t feel my own body unless his arms were around me; it was like I was living an artificial existence. If I were to die right now, I thought that I wouldn’t have any regrets, but there was still something lingering on that kept me from thinking so.

Violet Rose had become a popular fad nowadays amongst the lower artists in society. A lot of people had been coming to their performances for the past month, and they had been getting a lot of requests to perform because it was that time of they year again. Yes, Christmas was coming soon, and it wasn’t just Christmas, but it was also the day that Yoshie turns seventeen. So far the band has become known by most of the bars and public restaurants there, and it was all thanks to Shikita. People had been flooding in whenever they found out that they were to perform soon. Eventually Yoshie became known in school and there had been students talking to her all through the campus, and even some confessed to her. Of course she was to turn them down, this earned her several glares from the female population, but she was already used to this and wasn’t like she really cared what they thought.

Our scene begins on the quiet schoolyard; a male classmate had once again called out Yoshie. It seemed that they were getting even more persistent nowadays. Honestly speaking, Yoshie just saw them as people who wanted to get close to her because they might be invited to special events. Really, they didn’t even mind me when I was unknown. Some people can be so egotistical it’s annoying. This time the guy asking her out was a person from the other class in her grade, namely Umayaboshi Ken. He was tall and good-looking with dark hair and fair skin, a girl’s dream in other words, but not Yoshie’s.

“Ano…Taniguchi-san, is it alright if we go out?” he asked her as he scratched the back of his head “I’ve watched one of your performances so…”

“Absolutely not” without even letting him finish his statement she turned him down as she crossed her arms “We’ve never really talked to each other and you want me to go out with you all of a sudden? Please, don’t be so full of yourself. Just because your good-looking and intelligent it doesn’t mean all girls would go out with you”

“But I’m not like that!” he protested “I really find you as an amazing singer. When you play the guitar it also sounds really good, so when I saw your performance I was really moved”

“I’m grateful for the things you said and I won’t say that I don’t care about it, but what I will say that I won’t go out with you because I simply don’t like you in that way” she said with a straight face “Just continue to support Violet Rose and watch us rise”

“Taniguchi-san…” he blushed, as he looked at her in amazement “You’re so cool”

“Eh? Don’t go all fan boy on me now” she said as she turned her back on him “See you later then”

“Y-yes!” he replied “Don’t worry Taniguchi-san, I’ll support Violet Rose with all I have!”

Making a sight like this, he really is something…well at least this way I’m sure that we have more than one fan. Come to think of it, Umayaboshi-kun is the second person to ask me out this week. It’s weird, but whenever they tell me that that like my music it makes me feel a little nice…

Snow has begun to fall faster nowadays, especially since it’s already mid-December. During the examinations in October, Yoshie didn’t really do too well, but her efforts were enough to make her pass. Takayuki on the other hand was able to make it into the top one hundred, ranking number twenty-three. He was serious about possibly taking up business in college, after all if he was to become the band’s leader he had to have proper education. Yoshie had decided to work after high school instead, and if possible continue struggling with Violet Rose and strive to become professional artists. However that wasn’t the only thing going around these students, Yoshie’s birthday was to come in no less than a week, but she could barely care about that. The main thing she was looking forward to now was the Christmas holidays and the several offers they might get to perform this time of the year. One of the things Yoshie wished to do before the year ended was to write her own song using her own lyrics and music without any help from others. This was she’ll know how much she has accomplished as an amateur artist.

“Hime-sama, you’re spacing out” Takayuki said as he waved his hand in front of Yoshie’s face.

“Huh? Oh, sorry. I was just thinking” The two had been walking for quite a while now on the streets towards the studio. All of them had agreed to rehearse more this time because of the several offers they had been getting to perform.

“Is there something on your mind?” he asked her.

“I’ve been thinking of writing a new song for the band, but nothing has come up yet so far. I really think that we need to come up with something new so that the audience wouldn’t get so tired listening to the same things over and over again”

“We’ve only been performing frequently for three weeks and there has only been around six gigs since then” he sighed “Compared to other bands we’re still not that far yet”

“Don’t give me that negative attitude” she scowled “It’s better than what we’ve had before we met Shikita-san. In the past we’d usually have one performance a month, we’re moving a lot further now if you ask me”

“I’m not being negative, I’m being realistic. It’s true that we’ve had a lot of offers these past few weeks, but the locations aren’t that popular. Midnight Bar was an exception, but the others were usually new or unknown spots”

“Who cares as long as we get to perform?”

“Performing well isn’t enough these days. We have to consider what to do with our career in the future, so if it doesn’t work out we could have some sort of back up plan to make ourselves live in this country”

“You’re really starting to sound like a businessman, thinking of the future and all…” she sighed “I’m not that smart so all I can depend on right now are my talents and skills, otherwise I don’t think I could ever make it out in the world alone”

“Why don’t you have some dignity?”

“It’s not like that, singing is the only thing I can excel in, so I guess there’s no point in studying other things”

“Your moral standards confuse me sometimes” he sighed “About your new song, do you want any help? Maybe I could help with the composition”

“No way. I want to write a song of my own this time before the years ends, if possible before my birthday”

“Oh yeah, it’s your birthday in six days right? I guess it’s a good thing that we have Christmas holidays now, at least you’ll have more time to concentrate on your song writing”

“I just need an inspiration that’s all”

“Why not go on a date with Fuuto or something?” he teased her, ending up getting his face punched by Yoshie.

“I’m not going to ask a guy on a date, that is just desperate”

“You didn’t have to punch me so hard you know…” he rubbed his cheek where her fist punched him “What makes you so sure Fuuto won’t ask you out this season?”

“Because I know it won’t happen”

“Whatever…” all of a sudden, Takayuki’s phone rang as he answered it. Both of them stopped walking as Takayuki opened his phone to see who it was, apparently it was Kaijin “Hello?”

Oi! Takayuki! Fuuto and I are here at the studio; they’re closing the studio starting this afternoon for a bout a week. I don’t think we should practice here today, our time would be cut shorter. Is it okay if we did it at your place instead? We’ll get a refund here”

“It’s fine with me. Meet us at my house in a while”

Thanks Takayuki!”

“Hai, hai, see you” he snapped his phone shut as he turned to Yoshie.

“It seems we’ll be practicing at our place again today” he said.

“Did something happen back at there?”

“The studio is closing for their holiday vacation for a week, so I guess we’ll be rehearsing at my place today”

“The only thing that your basement misses is a working heater. Seriously, it’s freezing down there!”

“It’s better than nothing so stop complaining”

“Jeez…”

In another part of the city there was something else going on in the middle of the afternoon. The dark corners of the room were given light from the curtains, which blocked the view of the windows shining on the hotel rooms. There was moaning and panting, a mixture of hard breathing accompanied by lustful talk and impressions. Shikita had been sleeping with one of his clients, a young girl who looked no older than fifteen was naked underneath him as he thrust his member into her while he enjoyed her moans. How he loved he sound of a virgin losing herself to him, but for some reason it was not enough to satisfy him.

“Ah…Shikita-san…ah…” she said in between her moans.

“What’s the matter? Don’t you like this?”

“N-no…I-I…it’s enjoyable…I…”

“Don’t be so embarrassed, just relax and let me do all the work” he pushed harder as he began to lean in to give her a kiss on the lips, but he was stopped all of a sudden when his phone rang “Please wait a minute…”

“Y-yes…” she said as he moved away from her, leaving her to relax on the bed while he wrapped a white robe around him.

“Hello?” he answered.

Oi, Shikita-san, it’s Yoshie”

“Ah, Yoshie-chan, how’re you doing?”

I’m fine, Takayuki’s busy right now and he wanted me to ask you about our next live. He wants to know the final details A.S.A.P.”

“Alright. Tell him the next live will be in six days at a Punk-Christmas Celebration in Akihabara. The name of the location is Vivre, and if I’m not mistaken that’s the day of your birthday right?”

Yeah, how’d you know?”

“I remember a lot of things about my clients. Since I don’t think I’ll be able to do something on your birthday the day itself, why don’t I treat you to something on the 24th?”

Eh? What’s this about?”

“I just want to be close to my clients, both personally and professionally so that I can understand their side when it comes to problems with jobs. It’s easier that way”

Hm…I guess there’s nothing wrong with that. Okay then, but can we talk about this some other time?”

“Sure, bye then” he closed his phone and placed it back on the table as he took a cigarette stick from the pack lying there. A smirk curved on his lips as the young girl made her way towards him, placing her arms around his waist.

“Nee…Shikita-san, come back to bed…”

“My, my, your virginity has just been lost and you’re already acting like you’re a professional?”

“Because…the only person I want to do it with is Shikita-san…”

“You know what Hotoko-chan?” he turned to face her as he gave her a deep and passionate kiss on her lips, which eventually led up to her neck and collarbone “I hate liars”

“Eh? Liars?”

“Do you really feel that way about me?” he faced her again and whispered into her ear “Nee? Hotoko-chan?”

“O-of course I do…”

“Then tell me, am I really your first?”

“Y-yes! It’s true!”

“…liar” he pulled her hair from behind and pushed her to the ground, giving her the evilest look he could “I just said I hated liars didn’t I?”

“Shi-Shikita-san…” he mumbled as her body began to shake.

“I can’t be merciful at all times” he licked her neck, making her shudder “You should’ve thought of that before you tried seducing me”

The moans turned into screams, both of them reached climax after climax, but Shikita was being merciless with his time. Not even caring whether it hurt her or not, he continued to do his own pleasurable acts without hesitating. The thoughts about one certain girl other than the one he was with kept on controlling his every thought. His imagination ran wild as he began to think of her naked form underneath him instead of this ‘liar’ to whom he so calls. He was holding back his sensation for her so much it was driving him crazy, but he knew he had to be patient. He would have to break her at her most possible weak points, make her cry and if possible bleed. Eventually, he would make her his own under all means necessary. Everything she held precious he would take it and destroy it if necessary. This new victim would soon succumb to do all his bidding.

The basement of the Hanamoto household had been filled with music for the whole night, and thanks to the soundproof installments they had no problem with the neighbors’ complaints about the noise. For some reason, Yoshie was really putting her everything into this one rehearsal, she even looked like she was overpowering everyone else in the band as if they were useless decorations in order to complete the band. They had talked to her about this once, but decided that it was better because then they would have more impact on the crowd. However they already had enough impact as it is.

Waiting might’ve been an understatement…Looking away while I gaze at you is something different. Those few nanoseconds we get to have together, I treasure them until now. If telling you I loved you meant breaking apart, I would rather have spent my days seeing you in the distance…Oh…yeah…in the distance baby…” the song ended with that as the male members sat on the nearby couch, Takayuki and Kaijin on the couch while Fuuto sat on the armchair.

“Hey, can’t we take a break Yoshie? I’m exhausted” said Kaijin.

“It’s only been a couple of hours! What’re you complaining about?” she protested as she turned to face them.

“What do you mean a ‘couple’? It’s been over fours hours already! Look, I’m hungry and tired so I’m gonna go grab a snack”

“Fine!” she said as she placed her guitar on the table “I’ll come with you, I can’t sing on an empty stomach”

“See? You were tired too” Kaijin and Yoshie walked up the stairs, both of them heading towards the nearby convenience store, leaving Takayuki and Fuuto alone.

“So…” Takayuki began “Since Yoshie’s not around I wanted to ask you something”

“What?”

“Her birthday is coming up and I wanted to give her something special. I was hoping you could help me out”

“You know what, the way you’re saying it right now you sound like a little school girl”

“Don’t change the subject” he said “It’s not something material I want to give her, I want to give her something she’ll treasure forever”

“What is it?” Fuuto tilted his head to the side, wondering what Takayuki might’ve meant by what he had just said.

“Kaijin, pay!”

“I don’t have that much money on me!”

“So you think a student like me has that amount in hand?!”

Kaijin and Yoshie had been arguing about a certain matter at hands, more like it wasn’t really a serious thing. They were just fighting over who would pay more fir the stuff they just bought. Apparently Kaijin had bought a pack of cigarettes, which made their payment more expensive than they had expected, but Yoshie was able to contribute to the problem by adding a new music magazine, so they had to decide who would contribute to the payment.

“That magazine is way more expensive!” he screamed.

“But I bought more food than you so of course I wouldn’t have much money left! You’re older, you have work so pay for me like a good adult!”

“Then I’ll be a good adult by telling you to take care of your own responsibility!”

“Eh?! What the hell is up with that? You should take care of the younger ones”

“Ano…Ma’am, sir…” the cashier lady tried to calm them down because they were seriously causing a scene in the store.

“You stay out of this!” they said in unison.

After several arguments and disagreements, both of them gave up and decided to equally pay for it. This was because the owner of the store got irritated and forced them to pay for their purchase. On the way home, they also started bickering, but it was natural for these two because that showed just how close they were. During their first encounter, Kaijin had already discriminated Yoshie for trying out to become a singer, but she quickly changed his mind when she began to sing. However Yoshie didn’t forgive him that easily so she would start fights with him, but not to the point where they would stay mad at each other forever. Kaijin, although a playboy, does not wish to lay a hand on Yoshie because to him she was a little sister who stayed special to him. That was almost the same view Yoshie had on Kaijin as well, being her annoying older brother outside the Taniguchi residence.

“Hey Kaijin, don’t you have any intentions of sticking to one girl?” she asked him as they walked down the street.

“There’re a lot of different flavors out there, that’s why I’d like to try them all”

“But there must’ve been at least one girl who caught your attention”

“Actually, there was one”

“’Was’?” she repeated “So you’ve fallen in love once before?”

“Yes and no” he scratched the back of his head “It’s a complicated story, but I’ve gotten over it now”

“You’re not gonna tell me any time soon are you?”

“No”

“I thought so”

“You’re still a kid, you wouldn’t understand adult conversations”

“Unless you want that face of yours disarranged you better stop right there” she threatened as she cracked her knuckles.

“Alright, alright, sheesh” his tone of voice suddenly became serious as he looked at her “Yoshie, do you like Fuuto?”

“Eh?” her surprised reaction mixed with guilt gave her away the moment Kaijin said ‘Fuuto’, but she tried to cover it up by grinning and said “What’re you talking about?”

“It’s really obvious you know, even Takayuki noticed it before me”

“I really should be more discreet next time” she muttered “Now that you know what’re you gonna do about it?”

“Nothing really, but I’ll tell you this…” he began “…from my point of view, Fuuto has been gradually changing ever since he joined the band. In the past he was a complete wreck, you couldn’t imagine just how bad he was before. He would break into random fights on the streets and such. I was his only friend at that time, and knowing him he wasn’t this happy since that day, but now he’s even cracking jokes and joining the fun more often”

That day? I guess Kaijin knows about it too, but it’s true that Fuuto has been more open lately. “I know that too, then what’s your point?”

“I’m not saying this without reason, but if ever Fuuto or someone else, were to confess to you think about it first”

“I’ve had quite a few guys confessing to me lately and I don’t have to think about it because I don’t like them” she said “And what makes you think Fuuto would confess to me?”

“It’s just a hypothetical thought, but if you were to have a relationship, think first what’s more important to you”

Important to me? She thought.

“Relationships are fine, but if they begin to affect our band then you have to rethink it. I have a lot of women, I can admit that, but I don’t let them intervene with my music too much, Can’t you see why I’m never absent for any of our practices?”

“I guess you have a point there” she sighed “But honestly speaking, my top priority has always been the band, love always comes second, so you don’t have to worry about anything”

“Let’s just hope so”

“Kaijin, you just said something really adult-like you know?” she snickered “That’s very unusual of you”

“Of course, it’s my job to be the oldest in the band anyway” he said “And if you were to leave Violet Rose, it just wouldn’t be the same”

“I see, thanks, Kaijin”

The two arrived back at Takayuki’s house, and Takayuki’s mother who seemed eager to have them return greeted them. Apparently she had cooked dinner for them and she wanted to have the whole band eat there. Mrs. Hanamoto had always been enthusiastic about their band since she was pretty much the first adult to have liked their music, and she had also known Yoshie for quite some time so she was confident that they would all become famous one day. Once everyone was finished eating, the four band members went back down to the basement to practice. However during this whole period of time, Yoshie had been contemplating to herself while they rehearsed.

What Kaijin told me is right, I need to be able to set my goals straight. Too long have I wished to become a singer, along with everyone else I want to stand on a big stage, singing my heart out for everyone to hear. If Fuuto were to confess to me now, I might hesitate to accept, but for now singing is all that I’m in love with. I will never give up on my dream, I’ll never look back on any mistake I may have made in the past. God, don’t take away my voice…

Once practice was over, everyone made their way home. Yoshie had gone home unaccompanied because she wanted to be able to memorize how to get to Takayuki’s house without an escort. The one thing she was expecting at that time was to see her brother’s angry face saying something like ‘Why are you here this late?!’ or ‘What’s wrong with you, you idiot sister!’, but this was normal between them already so she didn’t mind. As she approached her house, she inserted her house key into keyhole and opened the door, and to her surprise there was extra pair of adult shoes by the shoe rack. This only meant one thing, so she ran towards the kitchen and saw her parents there drinking coffee with Yuuki. Yoshie’s father was a middle-aged man with black hair and a receding hairline. His brown eyes already had a few wrinkles around them, and his weight had made him look chubbier than before. Yoshie’s mother on the other hand was tall and lean, something you would’ve expected from a woman in her mid-thirties who worked as a flight attendant. Her short black hair already had white streaks appearing, as well as a few age marks, but that didn’t cover up the fact that she was beautiful for her age. She actually resembled Yoshie more than her husband.

“Mom! Dad! You’re home!” she walked towards them.

“Yoshie-chan!” her mother walked towards Yoshie and hugged her “It’s been so long since I’ve last seen you!”

“It’s only been two weeks” she said as she broke away from the hug.

“Yoshie-chan, you know your mother when she misses you” her father said “I took time off my work to be here, as well as your mother so you could be a little nicer”

“Hai, hai…”

“So, Yuuki tells me your band with Takayuki-kun is going well” her mother began as they sat down together “He told me you have a manager right? What’s he like? Is he any good?”

“Yes we have a new manager” Yoshie sighed “He’s really responsible, and he’s very good-looking too”

“Is he as handsome as you’re father?” said Mr. Taniguchi.

“No, you don’t even come close”

“That hurts you know!” her father smacked her slightly from behind her head as he said so.

“Ow! Jeez, now I got where Onii-chan got his violence from”

“Shut up!” said Yuuki.

“Now, now, it’s been a long time since our family got together. I know! Yuuki can help me cook something!”

“Why do I have to cook?”

“Just do it! C’mon”

The Taniguchi residence then began to fill with laughter and pleasant family smiles. Yoshie’s family was by far a normal family. It was something that she never took for granted because she knew just how much these people meant to her. They may have their quarrels and separations from time to time, but it didn’t change the fact that they were a family who shared the same blood. However it had occurred to Yoshie that Fuuto never really experienced the warmth of a loving family, it made her think how much he was missing on his life, and if it was possible for her to fill it up.

I’ve never really understood how not being loved by your own family is like, that’s why I never tried to understand how Fuuto might’ve felt when he was almost killed at that time. However, I now want to know how he feels without hurting him. I don’t want to let his already fading smile to disappear. I might sound selfish, but I want him to smile like the usual Fuuto, forever.

It was then that night her mind had begun to spin around these thoughts. Her inspiration to write a song suddenly bust out from nowhere as she went up to her room before excusing herself from the table, earning a few curious glances from her family members. When she reached the inside of her room, she locked her door, took out and notebook and guitar and started to write a few lyrics and creating a few tunes. Due to this little escapade, she barely slept a wink that night.

December 24th, Monday, 12:30 p.m.

One fine winter afternoon people began to walk on the streets of Tokyo, everyone was going out to hang out and enjoy the holiday vacations. Nobody really cared what was going on that time as long as they were enjoying themselves. The same thing goes to Yoshie who was seated on a bench beside the park, apparently she was waiting for a certain someone, namely Shikita Taro. They had promised to meet there by this time and in this location, and neither of them really told the rest of the band members they had an outing this day. It just seemed like something they wouldn’t really make a big deal of.

“He’s late…” Yoshie muttered as she checked her cell phone I wonder where he could be…

Meanwhile, a group of young spies were watching her from afar, waiting for her to make a move. Kaijin, Takayuki, and Fuuto had somehow found out that Yoshie was busy this afternoon without telling any of them whom she was going with. Takayuki had invited her to hang out with them that day, but she declined and so the three had found it suspicious that she had a date all of a sudden.

“Remind why we have to follow her again?” asked Kaijin.

“Don’t you think it’s strange that she’s going out with someone else besides the three of us? It’s usually she goes out with us or she goes alone, and this it doesn’t look like she doing either of what I just said” said Takayuki as they hid in the corner of an alleyway. If she was going out I wonder how come she didn’t tell us? I don’t think she has any new female friends I know of either.

“Someone’s coming” Fuuto muttered as they looked to see who it was.

Yoshie waved to the upcoming figure, and the three other members just stared at him with a mixture of confusion and awe. The person approaching Yoshie that time was Shikita, this was something they didn’t take too lightly. To the male members of Violet Rose, Yoshie was their princess that should not get taken away because she was the type to be taken lightly. If their princess was to be taken away like that, no one knew just how aggravated those three would be, but it might be Yuuki who might even kill whoever got to near his precious little sister.

“You’re late” Yoshie commented “Is this how you usually treat your girlfriend?”

“I’m sorry, I had some business to attend to” he laughed.

“I see. If you had work then maybe you shouldn’t have had taken me out today”

“No, it’s against my principle to do that. Besides, it’s something I wanted to do”

“Fine, whatever you say. So, where to?”

“There’s a nice restaurant down the street, how about I treat you there for lunch?”

“Alright, lead the way then”

The two began to walk together, this was Fuuto, Kaijin, and Takayuki’s cue to start following. If anything went wrong at least they’d be there, although Yoshie might get pretty pissed at what they were doing they weren’t just about to let their princess get taken away by a stranger. They could pretty much be described as knights who wouldn’t let their princess be taken away that easily by a foe, even though Shikita really wasn’t that much of a ‘threat’.

“I don’t get it, why’s Yoshie with Shikita-san?” said Kaijin as they tried to blend into the crowd.

“I don’t know either, isn’t that why we’re following them?” said Takayuki I thought that Yoshie likes Fuuto, then why is she out with Shikita?

“Another I don’t get is why she didn’t tell us about this”

“Maybe she has her reasons”

“But I thought she likes someone else…Man, what is this chick up to?”

“Aren’t you guys taking it too seriously?” Fuuto commented, “I’m sure there’s a logical explanation for this”

“YOU have no right to say that” Takayuki and Kaijin stared at him with, both glaring at what he just said because he was the one Yoshie liked, so it wasn’t right that he would just let her go out with another person.

“Huh…?” Fuuto just stared at them curiously, wondering what they could’ve meant by that.

As Yoshie and Shikita entered the restaurant, they sat down by the window and started to order. The restaurant was called family restaurant called ‘Umayaboshi’, it had a bunch of tables spread around the middle of the floor. Along the walls and sides there were bench-like seats that had barricades behind the chairs with plants on top of each one to separate the chairs between each other. Fuuto and Kaijin stayed outside while standing in an alleyway, keeping watch for Takayuki, who had gone inside to hear what they were talking about. Takayuki sat on the seat behind Shikita, hoping that the plants behind his head was enough to cover him as he placed his phone in one of the plants, making it call Kaijin’s phone so that they could hear their conversation.

“I’ll have the steak meal” Shikita said to the waitress.

“Hm…this one looks nice. I’ll have the spaghetti special” the waitress took their orders and told them to wait for a while before heading to the kitchen.

“So, while we wait for our order…” said Shikita “…why don’t we get to know each other?”

“Eh? Okay, ask away”

“Alright, since when have you begun singing?”

“Hm…I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember, but I joined Violet Rose a year ago. It was Takayuki who introduced punk music to me, so it must’ve been influence, but I guess I pretty much enjoy it now”

“I see, then it must’ve really been your calling”

“You think? I’ve always seen it as a hobby I really enjoy” she said “But now that you mention it, saying it’s a hobby is almost like a lie”

“I know, you seem to enjoy performing very much so I wouldn’t believe it’s just a ‘hobby’ like you say”

“You have a point there” she sighed “What about you? How old are you exactly?”

“I’m twenty-three, why?”

“I just thought you were a lot older”

“I’m not that old you know”

“But you seem so mature you seemed to be about twenty seven to me at least”

“I don’t know if I should take that as a compliment or as an insult…” he muttered “But you’re turning seventeen tomorrow right?”

“Yeah, I feel kind of old already”

“Seventeen isn’t old, well at least in my point of view”

“Here’s your food” the waitress came back, giving them their order of food.

“You’re an adult that’s why” she laughed “You know what I don’t get though, how come you don’t have a girlfriend yet? Takayuki, Kaijin, and Fuuto are all good-looking but I’ve never seen them with a girl, and you’re pretty much handsome yourself so it’s a surprise there’s no one whom you’re interested in”

Fuuto, Kaijin, and Takayuki were all pretty interested in what they were talking about now since they heard them talking about relationships now. They all began to feel uncomfortable when Yoshie said that she thought they were good-looking, but at the same time awkward when this was being said to their manager. “How can she say those things?!” Kaijin said as he turned the volume up on the speaker of his phone “Jeez, this is the topic I least expected them to talk about”

“Hm…” Shikita began “There’s no one I take that seriously I guess”

I knew this guy was a playboy…no wonder it was Kaijin he met at a bar…

“But…” Shikita added “There is this one girl at work who has really caught my eye”

“Oh really? Is she ‘the one’ as others say?”

“I don’t know, I haven’t really figured that out yet” he said as his eyes turned to the figure behind the plants behind Yoshie’s chair, he didn’t seem to be ordering anything and he looked like he might’ve been listening to their conversation. By that time, their food had come, and so Yoshie took her utensils and said “Whoa, this looks good…”

“I agree. Shall we begin then?”

“Okay, ittadakimasu”

The two began to eat their food while the three spies began to listen in on their every word. However the two were just having light conversations and petty talk, almost as if there wasn’t anything going on between the two, but they just would give up until they figured out what was going on. When the two had finished eating, they headed out the restaurant and took a stroll around the city. Takayuki came out a few seconds after them and called Fuuto and Kaijin.

“It doesn’t look like there’s anything going on” said Kaijin “Maybe this was just a petty thing”

“It still doesn’t prove anything” Takayuki looked towards the direction where Shikita and Yoshie went “I think there’s something we’re not getting here”

“I agree with Takayuki”

“So do we keep following them? Personally I think nothing is going on, Shikita-san doesn’t look like that kind of guy who would go after his clients” said Kaijin.

Neither of the two listened to Kaijin while he said this, they just went on ahead and began to follow Yoshie and Shikita who had just entered a mall together. Kaijin muttered something under his breath as he followed the two who had left him behind. While they followed the two who began to look into several stores, they were basically just window-shopping. They looked like they were uncle and niece going out to bond due to their age differences, but knowing they weren’t related they started to appear like a couple. At one point, Shikita and Yoshie entered a music store where he bought Yoshie a really good music CD, telling her it was her birthday present for the day. The three were really persistent on following them, but after a while it really looked like nothing was on at all. However, little to their expectation, Shikita had already known that they were following them, but he didn’t mind them thinking that maybe he’d play with them for a while. When the day was almost over, Shikita accompanied Yoshie towards the bus station, serving as her escort.

“I had lots of fun today” said Yoshie as she looked her phone “Whoa, it’s already five?”

“I guess time flies when you’re having fun”

“Yeah, thanks Shikita-san”

“It was nothing, it’s the least I could do” seeing as they were still being watched, he decided to do something unexpected for them to see. Placing his hand on Yoshie’s shoulder, he closed in on her and said “You really kept me company today, thanks Yoshie” he leaned in to reach her height and gave her a small kiss on her cheek, making Yoshie blush ten times over as she backed away from him.

“W-what’re you doing?!” she panicked as she placed her hand on the spot where he had kissed her. This was the second time he had kissed her, and it embarrassed her to no end. However instead of getting an explanation like she had expected, he began to laugh “What’s so funny?!”

“Nothing…” he said “You three can come out now, I was just joking”

“Shikita-san!” Kaijin jumped out of the corner and stepped in front of Shikita “You really have no shame do you?! You shouldn’t go around kissing girls like that!”

“It was a joke, a little something to heat you guys up for following us all day”

“Follow…?” Yoshie turned around and saw Fuuto and Takayuki coming towards them “You guys followed us? Jeez, I can’t believe you went that far…”

“It’s because you didn’t tell us where you were going that we followed you” said Takayuki as he rubbed her head “Shikita-san, please don’t do that something like to Yoshie again”

“Okay, I got it. I’ll see you guys next time, thanks for keeping me company, Yoshie” he turned on his heel and started walking in the opposite direction.

Yoshie began to release her anger on them, not caring whether she made a scene or not. It was just really annoying to think that they didn’t trust he this much, but at the same it was sweet knowing that they cared for her this much as well. However it still didn’t overcome the thought that they followed her discreetly. After several comebacks and arguments, they had all agreed to go back to Takayuki’s house to rehearse that night for their live tomorrow night at Vivre. They practiced for several hours until Takayuki’s mother told them to go home and get some rest for tomorrow. However, even though Yoshie was home she still couldn’t get her mind off one thing, the new song she had written was almost finished, and this song wasn’t dedicated to just anyone, it had been made especially for Fuuto. Just a few more finishing touches and the song was ready to be heard.

“Merry Christmas and Happy Birthday!” Mrs. Taniguchi began to shake Yoshie out of her bed, apparently Yoshie had spent the whole night finishing the song, and it turned out to be a success. However it completely took her body’s energy, making her sleep in until noon.

“Mom…it’s vacation…” she mumbled.

“I know, but I thought maybe you’d like to eat some of the nabe Yuuki and I made for today. After all you do have your live later right? This afternoon you’ll be spending your time with the family”

“Hm…fine…” Yoshie grumbled as she went out of bed, looking pale and sleepy.

“Honey you look awful! I know, I’ll fix you up for our family picture!”

“N-no thanks mom…I’ll dress up myself” Yoshie was afraid her mom would dress her up because she’d usually make her wear something really girly like dresses and such.

“Yes I will, I bought a dress that’d suit your eyes perfectly!”

“It’s alright mom, really”

“No. I only get this chance once in a blue moon, so I will do it. Look at it as my birthday gift for you”

Oh no…

Meanwhile, Yuuki and Mr. Taniguchi had already started fixing up the table for their family lunch. The Taniguchi family never really attended Yoshie’s performances because they knew it’d be strange for Yoshie unless it was a major event. Violet Rose has been performing for so long that it’d be tiring for them to come every time. So for tonight, they wished to spend the afternoon at home since they barely got to spend time at home together.

“What’s taking those girls so long?” said Mr. Taniguchi.

“I think mom decided to force Yoshie in a dress again” Yuuki snickered “I remember last year when she tried to make her wear this short frilly pink dress, now that was hilarious”

“But I’m sure your mother picked out something more suitable to Yoshie’s taste this time. She’s been going around that thought for ages now so that Yoshie would be happy when she gives her something”

“I guess that’s a better idea than picking out random cute clothes”

“Everyone! Yoshie’s ready!” Mrs. Taniguchi came down from the stairs and raised her hands towards the top of the stairs “I think I did a good job of picking out this dress. C’mon Yoshie-chan!”

“Now this I gotta see” Yuuki and Mr. Taniguchi headed towards the bottom of the stairs and stared in awe at Yoshie. The dress her mother chose extended up to her knees, and it billowed out at the edges to give it a flowing effect, which was accentuated by the layers of black lace underneath. The color was a creamy white shade with black butterflies embroidered unto the bottom half of the dress along with small black leaves and flowers. The top part showed a little cleavage, but it was alright, and the sleeves were short and puffy, giving it a really cute effect. Yoshie added a little to the outfit by wearing her fishnet stockings and black knee-high boots and a black military hat.

“Wow, you really did it this time dear” said Mr. Taniguchi as he placed his hand on his wife’s shoulder.

“I guess this is the most ladylike appearance Yoshie can pull off” said Yuuki.

“Shut up!” honestly, Yoshie really liked the dress and even thought that she might wear it tonight at her live performance. She walked down the stairs, only to be hugged by her mother who was happily embracing her daughter, saying that she had grown up to be such a lady, this was stopped by Mr. Taniguchi who told them that the nabe might get cold so it might’ve been wise to eat it already.

I’m really grateful that I have such a warm family, but I wish Fuuto could be my brother so that he might be able to experience such a thing as well, hang on…

“Mom, dad, is it alright if I invite a friend over?”

“Who? Takayuki-kun?” asked Mrs. Taniguchi.

“No, our band’s bassist, Takahashi Fuuto”

“Fuuto?” repeated Yuuki “Doesn’t he have a family to spend his time with?”

“It’s alright, I’m sure he’ll come” she didn’t want to tell them that Takayuki’s parents were dead, because then they might’ve seen him in a different way. Besides, she couldn’t let him spend his time alone at home “Is it alright?”

“Hm, I guess there’s no harm in that” said Mrs. Taniguchi.

“Dad?”

“Any friend of our daughter’s is a friend of ours”

“I’ll go call him then” Yoshie stood up and headed towards the phone, dialing Fuuto’s home phone number, hoping that he would pick up.

Hello?” his voice was heard from the receiver.

“Fuuto, it’s Yoshie, you wanna come over and have lunch with us?”

Us? You mean your family?”

“Yeah, if you’re not busy that is”

Ano…hm…”

“Is it okay with you?”

It’s fine, but would I be a bother?”

“Don’t worry, my parents said it was fine so you have to come”

But-“

“No buts, come here and enjoy your Christmas afternoon. That’s not a request”

Alright fine, I’ll be there in a few minutes”

“Okay, bye”

Yoshie grinned inwardly as she headed back towards the table, happily humming a tune to herself. Fuuto might not have a blood-related family anymore, but he still had Violet Rose to look out for him. It was certain that Yoshie would never abandon him no matter what would happen to them, even if she were to take several years to help him then it’d be alright with her. Even if it meant not telling him that she loved him, then it’d be fine for her as well, because it was different if you have someone to sing for either than yourself.

After around half and hour, a doorbell was heard from outside, and Yoshie volunteered to answer it knowing it was Fuuto. By now she had completely forgotten that she was wearing a dress and just walked around the house like it was nothing. When she peeked into the door’s peephole she saw Fuuto standing on the other side with snowflakes on his head and shoulders. She laughed as she opened the door, greeting him a merry Christmas.

“Merry Christmas, Fuuto” she said as she let him in.

“Yeah, Merry Christmas, and Happy Birthday by the way” he said as he stared at her. She really looked pretty in her current outfit that he couldn’t help but blush at the mere sight of her. However he tried to hide it by looking away and turning his attention to her mother who was right behind Yoshie.

“Yoshie-chan, is this your friend? My, he’s so handsome! I never knew you had band mates that looked like this!” she said as she approached him “I’m Taniguchi Kyoko, Yoshie-chan’s mother”

“H-hai ano…Mrs. Taniguchi” he repeated, feeling a little bit awkward that he was already calling Yoshie’s mother by her first name.

“Come now, take off your shoes! We have hot nabe on the table”

Yoshie laughed when she saw how embarrassed Fuuto looked, being told off by her mother as he took off his boots. It was almost as if he never really had a mother when he first saw Mrs. Taniguchi. When Fuuto made his way towards the dinner table, everyone else greeted him a warm Merry Christmas.

“Nice to see you again Takahashi” Yuuki greeted him.

“Yeah, you too” said Fuuto as stood beside Yoshie and her mother “Nice to meet you, I’m Takahashi Fuuto”

“You’re very polite aren’t you?” Mr. Taniguchi smiled as he motioned for Fuuto sit beside Yoshie’s seat “Have a seat”

“Hai” Fuuto, Mrs. Taniguchi, and Yoshie sat down back on their places and gave their thanks as they started to indulge in their food.

“So, Takahashi-kun, you’re a member of Violet Rose right?” asked Mr. Taniguchi.

“Yes, I’m the bassist actually”

“Oh right, Takayuki-kun plays the guitar right? Do you play anything else?” asked Mrs. Taniguchi.

“Actually I can play the guitar and the piano”

“Eh?!” Yoshie exclaimed “I didn’t know you could play the piano!”

“You never asked me so I didn’t say anything” he replied.

“Wow, then you’re pretty talented then aren’t you?”

“I won’t say I am, but thank you”

“Then tell us, are you Yoshie’s boyfriend by any chance?” Mrs. Taniguchi grinned as Mr. Taniguchi and Yuuki nearly spat out their food, looking directly at Fuuto and Yoshie.

“N-no! We’re not like that!” Yoshie blushed.

“It’s true, we don’t have that kind of relationship yet”

“’Yet’?” they repeated. That last word made Yoshie blush as she looked away from Fuuto.

“I didn’t mean it that way, but…” Fuuto was lost for words by this time.

“It’s alright if you want to ask our daughter out, I think you two make a wonderful couple! Then maybe I wouldn’t have to worry about Yoshie-chan giving birth to ugly children, then maybe she could have really good-looking children”

“Mom! Don’t talk like that!”

“That’s right, they’re not even together yet, right?” said Yuuki as he looked to Fuuto “Right, Takahashi?”

“Y-yes, exactly” Fuuto was shaken up by Yuuki’s threatening glances that said he’d kill Fuuto if he laid a finger on his sister, Mr. Taniguchi looked like he was doing the same as well.

“But it’s alright Yuuki, I’m sure Takahashi-kun’s parents wouldn’t mind either, right Takahashi-kun?”

“Mom, that’s…!” Yoshie didn’t want the issue of Fuuto’s parents to come up right now during this happy conversation.

“I don’t have any parents” Fuuto said as he put down his bowl “They died when I was twelve, I’ve been living alone since then”

“Oh, I’m so sorry Takahashi-kun, I shouldn’t have said anything” Mrs. Taniguchi approached Fuuto and held out his hands “From now on, don’t be afraid to ask the Taniguchi residence for parental guidance okay? Mother will help you through anything”

“Yes, Father will help you out too” Mr. Taniguchi followed his wife’s gesture and placed his hands on Fuuto’s shoulders.

“Oi Yoshie, is it true about Takahashi’s parents?” Yuuki asked Yoshie.

“Yeah, but please, don’t bring it up any further” she said to her brother as she looked at Fuuto’s face, all smothered by the concern her parents were giving him. It was rare to seem him receive so much kindness, but she was sure he liked because he showed no sign of fighting back against their gestures.

Fuuto, I’m glad I invited you over. You don’t have to worry about being alone now, because even if your family is gone, there’s another one here willing to help you out.

After an afternoon filled with nothing but laughs, useless conversations, and family-like gestures, it seemed like Fuuto really had a fun time despite the fact that he was spending his Christmas afternoon with someone else’s family. He couldn’t explain how he felt, but it was warm and comforting, exactly how a family should be. It’s been so long he seemed to have forgotten just how gentle and caring a family could be. When the sun began to set, Fuuto and Yoshie began to make their way towards the door, getting ready to leave for their performance that night. Yoshie wore a coat over her dress since it was snowing heavily that day, she was serious about wearing to their live that day.

“Be careful, and break a leg!” said Mrs. Taniguchi as they stepped out of the house.

“We will”

“Thanks for everything” Fuuto bowed to them.

“It was nothing Takahashi-kun, just take care of our daughter alright?”

“I will”

“We should get going, bye mom”

“Bye, do well with your performance!”

Vivre once again had been a full house, but there were more people now compared to their first live at Shibuya. Maybe it was because there were several people cosplaying as punks and gothic lolitas tonight that it seemed like this was the only time they would be able to show their true spirit on Christmas. If Yoshie wasn’t mistaken, she could swear she saw a few of her classmates watching them, she even saw Umayaboshi there. It was nice that he actually meant he would support them. The band before them, in Yoshie’s opinion, sounded awful. The members were all over the place and she didn’t know whether the male vocalist was singing or screaming or maybe even both, but she was confident that they could bring this show a little something nice.

“You guys ready?” said Takayuki as he came out from the dressing room “This band is giving me a headache”

“You said” replied Kaijin “We’re going to do so much better”

“It’s not good to say something like towards your fellow musician” said Fuuto as he stood beside Yoshie “They work just as hard as we do, so it’s not nice to say something about people you don’t know”

“Alright, alright, I understand” said Kaijin “Yoshie, you nervous?”

“Why would I be? I’m pretty pumped up right now! Where’s Shikita-san by the way?”

“He’s in the back, he’s in a special spot where he could record out performance”

“Oh, okay”

“By the way, aren’t you gonna take off your coat? We’ll be performing soon, all you have right now is your make-up”

“Oh shut up, I’ll just take off the damn coat” she went into the dressing room and slipped her coat off, looking at herself in the mirror as she did so. She had no idea she’d look so feminine despite the punk accessories she put on herself like the studded choker and leather wristbands. Leaving the thought behind, she walked out of the dressing room, only to be stared at by her fellow band mates and other random men from bands.

“Yoshie, is that you?!” said Kaijin as he approached her “I didn’t know you could look so feminine!”

“Am I supposed to take that as a compliment?”

“But Yoshie looks cute in it don’t you agree, Fuuto, Kaijin?” said Takayuki who was trying to conceal the bright red color on his face.

“Ye-yeah…I’m shocked. If you weren’t our vocalist I’d definitely rethink taking you out” said Kaijin.

“I wouldn’t even agree to that if my life depended on it”

“Hey, it’s a compliment okay?”

“Whatever”

The female staff member approached them, carrying a clipboard and talking to someone on the microphone attached to her ear. She seemed to be in her mid-twenties with long dark brown hair tied in a bun behind her head. When she came near Violet Rose, she immediately asked them “You guys are Violet Rose right?”

“Yes” Takayuki replied.

“You’re on in five minutes, you ready?”

“Yes”

“Good” she turned away and talked into her microphone again “They’re ready, cue the lights”

“She seemed pretty cute” Kaijin grinned “Maybe I’ll ask her to accompany me this Christmas evening”

“I don’t think so” said Yoshie as she stuck out her ring finger “She had a ring on this finger”

“Damn, and I thought I might be able to enjoy myself this Christmas evening”

“I could always accompany you, Kaijin-kun” Takayuki teased.

“I don’t want to hear that from you”

“What? There’re always a few groupies who might want you”

“Good point, maybe this night won’t be so bad after all”

When the preceding band had finished, Violet Rose were signaled to get ready as the host began to talk about their next performer and how much of a newbie they were to the music industry. Yoshie swore she could’ve strangled him by the way he talked about them. However she remained calm and tried to think about nothing but their performance that night, and nothing else. When the host was finally done talking, Violet Rose silently made their way up the stage as people began to stare at them, thinking that they seemed pretty quiet for a punk rock band. Once again, Kaijin sounded his drumsticks and Violet Rose created another mob of fans cheer loudly for them as Yoshie sang the lyrics of the song.

“…Waiting might’ve been an understatement, looking away while I gaze at you is something different, Those few nanoseconds we get to have together, I treasure them until now…If telling you I loved you meant breaking apart, I would rather have spent my days seeing you in the distance…Yeah…oh…in the distance baby…”

After their live performance, Kaijin had invited them over to have drinks with a few female friends, but Yoshie and Fuuto declined because they were sort of tired that night, especially Yoshie who had been staying up late these past few days just to finish writing a song.

“Well then, see you then” Kaijin said as he placed his arm around a small blonde girl’s shoulders “Happy Birthday Yoshie, and Merry Christmas to you guys”

“Yeah, same here” said Takayuki as a brunette girl with short hair placed her arm around Takayuki’s “Before I forget, Kaijin and I have something for you”

“What is it?” asked Yoshie as Takayuki handed her a paperbag “It’s fan mail”

“Oh, is this for all of us?”

“Actually it’s all for you”

“Are you serious?!”

“You seem to have a lot of fans, both male and female”

“Wow, I feel so touched!”

“Anyway, we better get going now, g’night” said Kaijin.

“Yeah, bye Yoshie, Fuuto”

“Bye” said Fuuto and Yoshie in unison as they left. When Fuuto and Yoshie were out of hearing range, Kaijin turned to Takayuki and said “Are you sure you’re just going to let them get away like that?”

“Why not? They like each other right? Besides, I bet she’ll be much happier with him”

“Takayuki, I don’t think I can ever do what you’re doing”

“It’s alright, after all, I’ll always just be an older brother in her eyes” he said sadly as they walked into the city. He suddenly remembered his previous conversation with Fuuto at his house a few days ago. It made him smile with a painful expression on his face.

A few days ago…

“It’s not something material I want to give her, I want to give her something she’ll treasure forever”

“What is it?” Fuuto tilted his head to the side, wondering what Takayuki might’ve meant by what he had just said.

“You like Yoshie right?”

“W-what?”

“Your expression completely gives you away”

Fuuto merely grunted, he looked away, a slight blush appearing on his face. “So what?”

“I’m going to tell you now that she likes you too” said Takayuki “My question is, do you like her the same way she likes you? I bet you’ve already noticed”

“Yeah, I have…” he sighed “…but I’m worried if I tell her she might move away from me”

“I said she likes you right?” Takayuki smiled “Her birthday is coming up, maybe you should tell her soon”

“But…”

“Because if you don’t want her, then I’ll take her away from you” Takayuki’s expression became serious “If you decide not to take her, then I will”

Fuuto stared at Takayuki’s serious look, it was rare of him to talk this way, and whenever he did the things that came out of his mouth were always serious. He began to think for a while, but then he looked at Takayuki in the eye and said, “Like hell I’ll let that happen”

“Kya! It’s so cold tonight!” Yoshie wrapped her coat around her tighter as they took a shortcut home through the park.

“Maybe you shouldn’t have worn that dress then” said Fuuto.

“But it looked nice right? Besides, my mom finally gave me something I like, the least I could do is wear it during a performance”

“I guess you’re right” seeing Yoshie shiver like that, he suddenly had the urge to wrap his arm around her as they walked “It’ll be warmer like this right?”

“Y-yeah” Yoshie blushed as he put his arm around her. This felt pretty awkward to her since they were alone in the park that night. When a vending machine came to sight she turned to Fuuto and said “I’ll buy us a drink. How’s that?”

“No thanks, I’ll just take a smoke” he said.

“Fine” Yoshie walked towards the vending machine as she looked through the choices. She was about to put her money inside when Fuuto suddenly placed his own bill inside.

“Which one do you want?” he asked.

“Uhm, this one” she pressed the button as the can fell into the bin underneath the vending machine. Both of them reached for it, making their fingers touch in front of the lid. Moving away from each other, Yoshie reached inside and took it instead.

“Thanks” she said.

“No problem”

Since there was a bench nearby, both of them stood beside each other as Yoshie began to drink her hot coffee while Fuuto started to smoke, placing his bass beside him. It was weird, she never really imagined spending her evening with Fuuto, but she was thankful that she did. Neither of them said a word, and I was getting pretty awkward so Yoshie decided to start a conversation.

“Our live tonight was something right?”

“I guess it was pretty enjoyable”

“You said it” she replied. Suddenly, she remembered the song she had been writing these past few days, so she looked to Fuuto and said “I wrote a song, wanna hear it?”

“A new one? Sure”

“I’ll just sing it, I don’t have my guitar now” she held the can of coffee in between her hands as she closed her eyes and began the tune. The tune was soft and gentle, unlike her other powerful songs this one had a different feel to it. It was as if it was her heart was singing with all it’s voice.

I was happy that we got to look at the clouds together

You were always there when I needed you

But now I want to be there when you need me

Are the words ‘I love you’ so hard to say?

Your distant footsteps don’t seem too far away now

Even if sometimes I don’t understand you

Even it sometimes I we don’t agree with each other

I want you to know that the red thread that connects our fingers

Is still there while I pull on it,

While I wish for you to look back and pull it towards me

As the stars above us smile, I wonder if they ever frown

Were they smiling or frowning when you cried?

I couldn’t help you back then

But now, I want to be there when the cherry blossoms fall

So that the you back then, would smile at me the same way I am

Even if sometimes I don’t understand you

Even it sometimes I we don’t agree with each other

I want you to know that the red thread that connects our fingers

Is still there while I pull on it,

While I wish for you to look back and pull it towards me

I will never forget that day you called me by my name

I had no idea you cared for me that much

That’s why I’ll never look back and say we had bad times

I’ll just say that those were times were joyous

While I wish for you to look back and smile towards me…”

Yoshie breathed out and sighed heavily, making a very flushed expression as she faced Fuuto “It’s all I was able to do under five days, but I personally I think it’s – “ Her voice stopped as she felt Fuuto’s lips press on top of hers. Her mind went blank, time stopped for the both of them as he pulled away from the kiss and looked at her.

“…it’s beautiful”

“Fuuto…” her eyes hadn’t stopped gazing at him, her face was still red from the sudden kiss while Fuuto put out her cigarette and wrapped his arms around her.

“I like you…” he whispered into her ear. Yoshie was so emotional that time she didn’t know how to reply to what he had just said. There was a mixture of happiness and excitement that stirred all throughout her veins as he looked at her once again. He traced his hand on the side of her face and smiled gently for her, it was the first time that he had smiled like that in front of her that it just made her eyes teary.

“Fuuto…I…I…” before she could finish her sentence, he kissed her again. This time, Yoshie accepted it and placed her arms around his neck. There wasn’t anyone who could ruin this moment as they expressed their feelings that one Christmas evening, or rather Yoshie’s 17th birthday.

The kiss was so sudden that I had suddenly lost my train of thought that night. I finally knew how Fuuto’s lips felt like, they weren’t cold ones I had expected, they were warm to the touch although they had tasted like cigarettes, but it was as if it had never been tainted with such a painful past at all. I never said that I liked him back, but I was sure that he could hear my heart screaming it out to him as he kissed me. After we kissed in the park, he led me to his apartment. We were both so into what we were doing that I felt like I didn’t exist until he placed his arms around me. I can’t remember what happened much that night, but I was sure that we were touching each other all over…

Once Fuuto and Yoshie had left the park, there a dark figure that approached the bench they were seated at and took the can that Yoshie drank from. All the contents had spilled, but all he did was put the part where Yoshie drank from against his lips, taking an intention indirect kiss from her. A smirk appeared on his lips, his plan was going to come into action soon. He will soon have her, and he will break her until she can no longer be broken.

“Taniguchi Yoshie…” he muttered “You’ll soon be mine”

Verse V: “Takayuki’s Reprise”

December 2nd, 2007 by escaflownelover

There’s a saying that you don’t realize the true value of something unless you’ve lost it. Yoshie was my first love, but I’ve never once told her about it. I thought that if I told her, she’d run towards a place where I couldn’t reach her. I became scared, that’s why I tried to become strong just for her. Nee Yoshie, can you still hear the wind?

It was snowing, softly and warmly, it was snowing; his rough yet gentle hands began to move down her hair, gently caressing each strand that lay past her dark locks. She began to feel weak, as if her own body was melting unwillingly. How could she resist these feelings any longer? Her eyes were kept closed, and unless his arms were around her she didn’t know that her body still existed. Is there a chance that I’m still alive? She thought this as his hands moved across her back, and as she began to open her eyes, the figure suddenly disappeared.

“Ahh!” Yoshie shot up from her bed, panicking from the intensely passionate dream. Oh man, was that weird, I almost got a heart attack! But, I didn’t get to see that face yet…but, for some strange reason it felt kinda nice…Oh my god, I’m acting like a pervert! Erase! ERASE!!!

“Yoshie! Are you up yet?!” her brother’s annoyed voice was coming from behind the door, and he seemed pretty tensed.

“Yeah I’m up, can’t you let me get ready in peace?!”

“You know you’re gonna be late, again” he said “And for the love of god, open the freaking door!”

“Just go back to your breakfast and let me get dressed if you want me to be early! Jeez!” she threw the blanket off her and made the bed. As she got to her morning rituals and got into her uniform, her attention was quickly averted to her cell phone, which was lying motionless on the bedside table. She picked it up and turned it on, only to find a couple of messages from Takayuki and Kaijin, it was nothing special, just a couple of messages asking where she went in the middle of the night with Fuuto. Without replying, she took her cell phone and mp3 player as she usually did and left the interior of her room, and as usual, her brother was there in the living room watching the morning news. He was starting to look like a parent everyday.

“Breakfast is on the table” he told her.

“Yeah” by the time he had told her she was already gulfing down the rice and fish he had cooked this morning. Strange seeing as Yoshie was the girl and Yuuki had to cook. This was because Yoshie was a terrible chef, but she was pretty good with housework, in which Yuuki was no good with.

“Slow down, chew what you eat” said Yuuki as he entered the kitchen to refill his cup of tea “The news says that there’s this possible chance of a snow storm tonight, so don’t be out too late”

“Yeah, yeah, I’ll know when the time of jeopardy comes” she said sarcastically as she placed her dishes in the sink.

“And this time, don’t come home at an unwanted hour without informing of anything!” he said as he smacked Yoshie on the back of her head.

“Ouch! Would you quit it you stupid older brother!” she paid him back by kicking him on the shin.

“Oh shit! That freaking hurt you little–!”

“Jaa nee, onii-chan” she said as she walked towards the door “Ittekimasu!”

“Ittana…shai…” Yuuki forced himself to say this as he held onto the spot which his little sister kicked.

On her way to school, Yoshie once again met up with Takayuki at the train station, however it didn’t seem like their usual meetings. He looked like he was somewhat in a bad mood. Although he was smiling like he used to, there was something in the atmosphere that didn’t quite seem right while they were together. There were times when he would enter a complete zone of silence and sometimes he wouldn’t even finish his sentences. On their way off the train he even almost forgot his guitar, plus he had been laughing but it didn’t sound as cheerful as it should’ve been. The moment they reached the entrance of the school, Yoshie pulled him aside and faced him.

“Hey, what’s your problem? You look down today” she said in a very commanding tone of voice.

“Problem? I don’t have a problem” he replied.

“Let me get this straight, you aren’t as cheerful as you are today and you have been spacing out lately, and you tell me you’re not okay…we’ve known each other too long for you to give me that excuse, now spill”

“It’s nothing, I’m just myself today” he walked away from her, but she pulled him back and gave him a scowl.

“Takayuki, don’t expect me to believe that. Whenever you were down you’d act like this, so don’t just stand there and say that nothing happened”

“I told you, it’s nothing. You wouldn’t even care about it” Takayuki was beginning to sound annoyed by now.

“Oh c’mon, did you meet up with a girl or something?” she teased “Don’t tell me you’ve actually found someone you like”

“Yoshie, it’s my business so do my favor and stop butting in already!” he half-yelled it at her face the moment he said her name. Yoshie was so shocked and so angry that she couldn’t even talk, instead, she turned around and walked away.

“Well then screw you!” she screamed at him before she left. Darn it, I’m trying to be a good friend here! Damn bastard doesn’t even appreciate it. Fuck him!

Takayuki walked into his classroom and sat down on his chair without talking to any of his classmates. He looked out the window and began to watch the metallic gray sky turn into different shades of white and gray with each passing moment. When he yelled at Yoshie like that, it was something he didn’t want to do, but he just couldn’t take the questions she was throwing at him. It was too painful to have to lie to her, and it was something she needn’t know at the moment. He placed his face on the palm of his hand, his eyes not leaving the open window. At this moment, he wished that he didn’t have to see what had occurred between Yoshie and Fuuto last night. Except that time span that their faces were close to each other, he could feel his heart forcefully trying to stop them, but he knew that it wasn’t something he was supposed to interfere with.

I’m sorry Yoshie, I don’t know how long I can keep this up…I don’t know up to when I can keep lying to myself. If I really care for you, I should be able to wish you happiness, but…I want to be able to be that person whom you will run after, but it seems I’m the one who’s chasing after you…

“Hanamoto!” his teacher called out.

“Ha-hai?” he replied as he stood up.

“Please read the next line”

“Hai…” his classmate whispered to him the line he was supposed to read out loud. He gave a small nod of thanks and began to read.

“’Even though his clammy hands were shaking from the nervousness and terror, he continued to move on with his journey. The promise he made was too dear to break, even if it meant his life, he wanted his loved ones to remain happy’” almost all the girls seemed to be fawning over him because of his perfect accent when speaking straight English. It really helps since he had been reading English books since he was young.

“Thank you Hanamoto-kun, now class, that line meant that the…” the teacher continued on with the lesson, and Takayuki continued to stare at the line he had just read over and over again.

“Ha-hanamoto-kun…I…I…” she gulped “I really, really like you!”

A girl from Takayuki’s class had just confessed to him during their free period. This was happening on the rooftop of the school, the perfect place for any young youth to confess their desires. However, it didn’t look too good for this young girl, for her confession would soon be put to vain. This wasn’t the first time Takayuki had been confessed to. Ever since he was junior high, a girl would confess to him once in a while, but he had never even once considered going out with them. This one was just the same.

“I’m sorry, Tsuhara” he told her gently.

“Eh…?” she raised her head and looked at him, all teary eyed and disappointed at his answer “N-no, I’m sorry for wasting your time, Hanamoto-kun, it’s just that, I’ve always admired you…”

Takayuki didn’t reply, he just let her talk all she wanted, it was the least he could do for destroying her hopes.

“I-I, I’ve really admired you…because you were so smart and good-looking, and you were so popular even though you’re a punk, and I really liked your smile…especially when you’re with Taniguchi-san…”

“Tsuhara, I—”

“No, please don’t say it, I knew you wouldn’t like me” she wiped her tears as she began to sob more and more “I-I’m sorry…”

“No, I should be sorry” he said as he approached her “What you did right now, is something I could never do, that’s why I should be the one admiring you”

“Hanamoto-kun…”

“C’mon, you don’t need to keep on crying” he said as he gave her the warmest smile he could muster up “Let’s go back”

“Ye-yeah…” she replied as she wiped away the last of her tears. When they got to the foot of the stairs, they had met up with Yoshie, who seemed to be going up to the rooftop.

“O-oi, Takayuki…” she greeted him, but she sounded really weird since she saw a teary-eyed girl with him. From their current position, she knew that he had dumped another girl like always.

“Yoshie hi…” he said as he scratched the back of his head “About this morning, I’m sorry…”

“Eh? Don’t worry, I’ve already forgotten about it” she replied as she looked to the girl beside him “Who’s this?”

“My classmate, Tsuhara Touki” he said as he put a hand on her shoulder, making her blush slightly.

“Uhm…hi” Yoshie greeted her “Anyway, I’ll go back to class now, bye”

“Bye” he said back. When Yoshie was no longer in sight and when Touki and Takayuki were alone, she asked him “Hanamoto-kun, is Taniguchi-san the one you like?”

“Eh? What makes you think that?” he joked her “I don’t know…”

“I just want you to know, I’m not giving up” she said as she stopped him half-way through “I want to become that special person to you, so wait for me until then”

“Eh?”

“I won’t give up” she said looking quite embarrassed, but yet quite confident. She began to remind him of someone, but he just couldn’t figure out who it was.

“Yeah…” was all could say before returning to the classroom with her. She was really something else, and she was definitely different from the other girls who tried to confess to him. However, he still couldn’t see anyone else.

I’m sorry, Tsuhara, I admire your courage, but that’s all I really feel. I don’t think you can change the way I feel even if you tried. I just can’t, and I know I will never be able to give up on Yoshie…even if it means throwing away my own happiness. I’m sorry…

“Takayuki!” Yoshie called him from the door of their classroom “Let’s have lunch”

“Sure” he smiled as he approached her.

“If you’re gonna walk any slower you are so going to treat me for lunch” she said as she raced him towards the cafeteria.

“Oi! That’s such a childish game!”

“Just try and keep up with me, baka!” she called out.

“Damn it, wait up!” he said as he ran after her.

Her figure just seemed to be coming closer, but at the same time it wasn’t. She moving so far away that he couldn’t figure out until when he can keep running after her like this. That shadow which he was always stepping in, he doesn’t want to separate from it. However, with each step he took, he felt his strides becoming smaller and smaller. How long before he could no longer keep up?

God, please, if you’re listening, I’ll do anything for her, I’d give my life for her if she asked me to. Just don’t ever let her out my sight, let me keep running after her like this. I don’t ever want her smiling face to fade. A dream connected to a dream is all I can acquire form our current relationship, and even though the string that connects us isn’t the red string, this promise I made with you to be with Fuuto, is what keeps us connected.

Shikita Taro, an elegant and successful agent with an eyes for success, or at least, that’s what he looks like. As he looked through certain documents on his neat and tidy desk, there were a lot of things going through his mind. What was it that was making him so preoccupied? Nobody knew, not even his officemates knew what goes through his head. Friendly as he was, there was very little that anyone knew of him, especially his past. What happened in his past no one knew, the only thing known about him is his incredible ability to make anyone he decides to manage famous. He began to insert a CD into a player and reviewed the last show that Violet Rose had, until someone knocked on his door.

“Hey, Shikita-san” his young male co-worker walked into his office, holding what seemed to be a folder of documents. Compared to Shikita, this employee looked like his underling rather than his co-worker, considering the fact that he seemed to be in his late thirties and that he was wearing very out-of-style clothing. Especially since there already white streaks on his dark black hair.

“What is it, Kirino-san?” Shikita asked him.

“Here’re the papers you asked for this morning” he replied placing the folder on his table. His attention was immediately sent to the television screen beside Shikita’s desk “Looks like you got into a punk band this time around”

“Yes, they seem very promising” he said as he opened the folder.

“It’s weird though, you usually go for young girls who want to be idols and such” said Kirino “A lot of them have become quite accomplished in this field. I’m just wondering how come you got this bunch”

“They have the looks and sound, so I think it wouldn’t hurt to try”

“The lead vocalist is a female? Wow, and she’s pretty good-looking too. The other members aren’t half-bad either”

“Wanna hear them play?”

“I have the time, so alright”

Shikita pressed the ‘play’ button on the remote and music began to fill the room. Kirino was listening intently to the sound, and he looked pretty serious too. This video came from the time Shikita first came to the studio and heard them play. When the song stopped, Kirino faced Shikita and smiled “Looks like they really have something there”

“Which is exactly why I took them in”

“You know what I don’t though is that even though most of your clients have become famous, you’re still here in this small place” he said “That last girl though, Youki or Kouki, something like that…how come she quit right before you could give her a proper contract?”

“Kouki…? Oh right, that girl. Well I guess she just wasn’t prepared for this kind of life, she told me that she wouldn’t be able to handle this type of job anymore, so she quit”

“Eh…so that’s it. Rumor has it that you slept with her, but I’m sure that’s not true” Kirino smiled “Let me give you some advice Shikita-san, you should go find the right girl for you. A good looking young man such as yourself shouldn’t go to waste, I bet there’re a lot of women out there who’d die to have you as their husband”

“Well then maybe I should start looking before I start having wrinkles” Shikita laughed as he took out his cell phone “I’ll be getting back to work now if you don’t mind”

“Alright, I’ll be on my way now” said Kirino “See you later, Taro”

“Yeah, Youmei” they both smiled before Kirino exited the office. Shikita’s smile seemed very gentle at that moment, however it quickly disappeared when his eyes met Yoshie’s figure on the television screen. His smile turned into a grin, an unpredictable and wicked grin.

“Let’s see up to where this takes us, Yoshie-chan

Once again, Violet Rose was rehearsing in the usual studio they would rehearse in. Yoshie would sing the vocals, Takayuki would use his guitar to accompany her, Fuuto would use his bass to bring a rhythmic beat, and Kaijin would use his drums to bring power to the song. There didn’t seem to be a day where they didn’t rehearse, they each had a dream to go to the top, together, all four of them.

“That was one heck of a rehearsal” said Kaijin as he finished the last beat of the song. They were taking a short break by this time.

“You said it” said Takayuki as he checked his phone “Oh, Shikita-san sent me a message, he said he’ll be coming over later. He says he’s got some good news”

“Maybe he got us a sweet deal with a recording company” said Yoshie.

“Moron, he only got to be our manager for a day, you can’t be that stupid now can you?” said Kaijin “With your small intellect I bet we’d have been disbanded if it weren’t for—”

“Say another word and I’ll shove your drum sticks up your ass” she threatened.

“Calm down, you know I’m kidding”

“Whatever, besides I don’t think there’s anything wrong with fantasizing a little” said Yoshie.

“Alright, no need to be so pussy about it”

“You guys, stop it already” said Takayuki as he took out his wallet “I’m gonna go buy a drink, you guys want anything?”

“Beer” said Yoshie and Kaijin in unison.

“What about you Fuuto?”

“Same”

“Hey Takayuki, I’ll come with you” said Yoshie.

Yoshie and Takayuki both exited the room, leaving Kaijin and Fuuto alone. Kaijin was glancing towards Fuuto from time to time, he looked like there was something he wanted to ask him, but he couldn’t bring himself to do so. Instead of continuing to hesitate he called out to Fuuto and asked “Fuuto, what does this band mean to you?”

“What’s with that question?” asked Fuuto .

“You know what I mean” Kaijin looked at him more seriously this time.

“This band…”

On the other side of the building, Yoshie and Takayuki were arguing on what brand of drinks they were going to buy. Yoshie wanted the seemingly more expensive brand, saying it tasted better, but Takayuki wanted the cheaper brand because it was his money that they were using, ultimately, Yoshie lost and ended up buying the brand Takayuki wanted.

“It’s the same wherever you go, beer will be beer” said Takayuki.

“I hate you” she replied as she took a couple of cans “By the way, when’s the final date of your move?”

“By Friday actually. The place we’re moving to is pretty big, and it’s perfect in case we need to rehearse longer. There’s a basement in the house which I forced my parents to turn into a rec room, so we bought a couple of pieces of furniture to make the room look a little better”

“That’s awesome! You guys need help moving and stuff? Onii-chan and I might be of some help if you want”

“That’s fine with me, and I’m sure my parents wouldn’t mind either since we’ve known each other long enough”

“What if we ask Fuuto and Kaijin to come too? We might need the extra manpower”

“Sounds cool”

The two started to talk about the move and the several things they needed to have done before that day. As they walked, they just happened to pass by the entrance, which Shikita had just come through. Takayuki and Yoshie approached their manager and greeted him, and so did he.

“Yoshie, Hanamoto-kun, are the others in the studio?” he asked.

“Yeah, you told us you have some good news?” asked Takayuki.

“Yes, but I figured it’d better if I told all of you at the same time”

“Is it a recording deal?” asked Yoshie with her hopes high up.

“Nope” Shikita replied.

“I can’t believe you actually stuck to that belief Yoshie”

“Oh shut up”

“No need to get all worked up you two. As a couple, you two look almost like siblings”

“Couple?” the two friends said simultaneously as they headed towards the studio.

“Aren’t you two together?”

“No, of course not” said Takayuki “We’re just friends”

“Yeah, friends” said Yoshie “We would never go out with each other”

“Exactly, just…friends, right Yoshie?” for a moment, Takayuki looked hurt when Yoshie said what she said, and for a second, Shikita noticed this.

“Precisely. C’mon, the studio is already nearby. I want to hear what Shikita-san has to say” Yoshie rushed to the studio door and opened it, announcing Shikita’s arrival. Shikita went ahead while Takayuki just walked behind, walking slower than the two companions he was with.

Nee Yoshie, what am I to you…?

“Since everyone’s here, I have some great news” said Shikita “I got you all a live performance this Friday at Midnight Bar in Shibuya, they’re having chosen bands from all around Tokyo perform and they just so happened to like your music. The owner, Sawamura-san, told me that you guys might even be the highlight of the show, even though it’s just a small thing”

“Really?!” exclaimed Yoshie, but then remembered something very important “Wait, that’s the day Takayuki moves”

“What?! How come you didn’t tell us the date earlier Takayuki?!” said Kaijin.

“I was going to do that today! It was supposed to be a surprise but I didn’t know that we were going to have a live either!”

“Wait, I’m sure there’s a way to go around this” said Shikita “What time is the move Hanamoto-kun?”

“Around noon, but I’m not sure how long it would take for us to get settled”

“The live is at night, so I’m pretty sure you might be able to come over”

“It seems kind of wrong though…”

“Oi, Takayuki, I’m sure your parents would understand that right?” said Kaijin.

“I’ve known your family too long Takayuki, they’d understand how important a live is to us”

“I’ll try, but I can’t make any promises”

“You better make sure you’re coming, it’s the first live Shikita-san gave us, so you better not blow it!” said Yoshie as she grabbed onto Takayuki’s shirt.

“Alright, fine!”

“Since you guys are here, why don’t you continue rehearsing? I’d like to see what’s going on here” said Shikita.

“No problem!” said Yoshie as she grabbed the microphone and screamed into it “I CAN’T WAIT TO GO ON LIVE!!!”

“Yoshie! Mind the volume will you?!” exclaimed Kaijin, who was covering his ears, alongside the others.

“I hope I don’t go deaf this Friday…” said Takayuki.

“Quit being such losers and let’s get this rehearsal started already!”

“Jeez, no need to be so busy” said Kaijin as they stood their places. Kaijin raised his drumsticks and clapped them thrice, making the rest begin their part of the song.

My heart lingered through the shattered glass, unknowing of the painful memories…I would look at you but you walked away, it stings me so and I bleed crying for sanity to reproach me and my broken soul…Please listen to my words slowly, and please don’t ever forget my voice…” Yoshie begun her vocals, accompanied by the rest of the band. Shikita began to watch intently, and from time to time he would give comments, both negative and positive. Eventually, they began to look better each time.

They practiced non-stop, and most of the time they were finding ways on how to make themselves look and sound better, with the help of Shikita, and even Fuuto was beginning to feel more comfortable around him, but he still had a few issues though. They even played their old songs, just to look for something that they might’ve been missing. It was the first time they had actually felt so tired in their lives, especially due to the few coaching tips Shikita was doing. When they took a break, everyone seemed pretty worn out as they sat down on the nearby chairs.

“Have you done this before, Shikita-san?” asked Yoshie.

“If you mean managing a band, no. I’ve had some friends who did though, so I got my experience from watching them, back then I usually had solo artists and I’d coach them when there wasn’t any available coach”

“You’re pretty amazing then huh?” said Kaijin as he gulped down his beer.

“Not in particular, there’re a lot of other better ones than me”

“Don’t be so modest” said Yoshie as she looked at the time; it was already eight in the evening.

“I can’t believe it’s still so early” she said.

“I guess we had some fun tonight” said Kaijin as he lit up a cigarette. He offered a stick to Fuuto, who got one and lit it up.

“Let me try one” said Yoshie.

“You said you’d never smoke in your life”

“Hey, I just want to know what’s so bad about it”

“I’ve tried it, and I don’t like it” said Takayuki.

“Just shut up and give me one” she took out one stick and let Kaijin light it up. After taking in one breath, she could barely take it and began coughing. “Ack! What the-hell do-you like about this?!”

“I told you so” said Kaijin as he took the stick from Yoshie and threw it in the trashcan nearby.

“No matter how much you guys say it’s good, I hate it”

“Here, you better drink something” said Fuuto as he handed her a bottle of water.

“Thanks” she said as she drank nearly half the whole bottle.

“You look like such a kid right now” said Kaijin.

“I do not you stupid gaijin!”

“Who’re you calling a gaijin you little shrimp?!”

Shikita laughed a little at the two’s bickering and asked Fuuto “Do they always fight like this?” Fuuto looked away for a while and thought about it. He turned to the two and chuckled.

“Most of the time” he replied.

“Shikita-san, could I ask you a question?” asked Takayuki.

“What is it?”

“Do you really think our band has a future?”

“That doesn’t depend on me” said Shikita “It depends on the members”

After three nights of continuous practice, the day of Violet Rose’s awaited live performance finally came. That morning, they came to Takayuki’s new house to help him unpack what needed to be unpacked. They’ve been doing so since they came there. Fuuto and Kaijin were helping out with the furniture, and Yoshie was helping out with decorating the place. The new Hanamoto residence was nothing like what Takayuki had described to them and they probably understood why he didn’t tell them much about it. The house was a lot bigger than their old one and could probably accommodate more than three people. It was a basic design; it had two floors and a basement, which was being turned into a studio for the band as we speak. The only thing amazing about it was that it had a lot of space and for a cheap price nonetheless.

“One, two…!” Kaijin and Fuuto had just finished placing a really heavy couch into the basement and were really exhausted.

“Jeez, how much more furniture do we have to move in here?” said Kaijin as he wiped beads of sweat of his forehead.

“Stop complaining and do your job” said Yoshie who was brining in a tray with four glasses of tea “I worked hard to apply the wallpaper in this room so don’t complain with using your muscles once in a while”

“You’re job was easy!” Kaijin grabbed one of the glasses and drank it in one gulp “It’s winter and I’m getting tired like this…Takayuki better be thankful we’re such good friends”

“You’re really noisy today” Fuuto took a glass as well.

“Yamamoto-kun, Takahashi-kun, could you help me with these for a minute?” Mrs. Hanamoto called out to them from the floor above them. The two boys replied with a small yes and headed upstairs while Yoshie smirked at them. While the young vocalist sat down on the newly placed couch, she took her own glass and savored the flavor of the tea.

So this is the place huh…it really is a lot different from what I had imagined. Starting from now this is where we’ll make new memories together, the four of us will laugh, cry, and play together here in this basement…You’ve really chosen a good spot this time Takayuki.

“Yoshie-chan” Takayuki had come out of nowhere. He surprised Yoshie by squeezing each side of her cheeks.

“I-itai!!! Takayuki it’s hurts!” Yoshie grabbed his hands and squeezed them as tight as she could and almost digging her nails into his skin.

“Oi! Quit it! I’m not making you bleed am I?!” he quickly took his hands off her face and rubbed them, hoping that it really wasn’t bleeding. Seeing as they weren’t he leapt from behind the couch and landed right beside Yoshie.

“Can’t you saw ‘boo’ like normal people?” she asked him.

“Can’t you just cry like normal girls?”

“Say that again and I’ll give you you’re first ass kicking in your new home” she said as she crossed her legs.

“Yoshie, you know what, I’m more excited about our live tonight than moving”

“Yeah me too”

“The why’d you help us move?!”

“Performing live is the best sensation I could ever feel in my life, that’s why more than anything else I’d love to perform on stage with everyone else” she said.

“Yoshie, who knew you were so deep…” Takayuki began to pat her head.

“Shut up”

“Now that we have a manager we really have to consider things” he began “I want to at least finish high school, or it would be even better if I got into a good university. In case our career as performers don’t work out at least I’ll have a back-up plan”

“Then you’re leaving us once we’ve lost our use eh Leader-san?”

“Not completely” he said as he took a sip from Yoshie’s drink “If ever we don’t make it good into the music industry I’ll get a job and make sure that all three of you are doing well. Honestly speaking playing in a band is enjoyable, but I want to accomplish something else besides becoming professionals. If I plan to take the responsibility as our leader I want to be able to be depended on easily by others, and I need the proper education for that”

“Aw…you really are a big brother!” she said “But it looks like either way you’re really up for becoming a professional performer”

“It’s natural since we’ve been working too hard for this”

“But I always wondered what would become of us now if we didn’t decide to make Violet Rose”

“Easy. I’d be top in the class and you’d be my only friend. Kaijin would continue hitting on women, and Fuuto would sulk on his own”

“That was a quick response”

“And you wouldn’t ever experience your first love”

“Say another word and I’ll snap that head of yours right off”

“Alright Hime-sama…”

“What’s with the ‘hime-sama?”

Suddenly, they felt like there was wind blowing from somewhere in the basement. They stood up and looked around, but they couldn’t really feel where the breeze was coming from. Yoshie and Takayuki were practically looking through ever wall, nook, and cranny to find it.

“That was strange…it kind of reminds me of when we were younger” said Takayuki.

“Yeah when we were at your house and then we suddenly felt wind like that”

“We got in trouble because of looking around too much. My parents thought we were hiding something remember?”

“I think they thought we were hiding a dead body”

“That was a laugh”

They looked at each other and began to laugh as they walked out of the basement, giving up on ever finding that breeze.

You know Yoshie, the name ‘Hime-sama’ really suits you well. I’ll keep calling you that, forever and ever, even until the end of time, I’ll be the only one calling you by that name .Then maybe that wind can carry my secret again.

Midnight Bar, the name brought a sensation of easiness and excitement to anyone who heard this name. It was a bar meant for people of ages ranging from eighteen to thirty, and it consisted of people who just wanted to get away for the night. Yoshie and Takayuki, although underage, got in because they were tonight’s performers. The stage was designed simply with dark violet curtains that covered the stage every time an act would end, and there some colored lights that appeared during performances. Shikita took it in to have the lights programmed to match their songs. Yoshie peeked out from backstage and looked at the audience.

“Whoa…this place is packed!” she said.

“This place is popular for having really good performances so it’s to be expected” Shikita replied to her comment “Sawamura-san has a really good eye for these things, so I guess it means she liked your music”

“Then I guess we’re pretty lucky” Yoshie grinned as she walked towards the backdoor where Fuuto was. He was leaning on the wall while smoking a cigarette which he does before they go on stage. “Hey, you nervous?”

“Not really” he replied bluntly.

“Shikita-san outdid himself this time. I had no idea this place was going to be as amazing as I had thought” she said as she leaned beside him “The band playing now is pretty good, but I bet we’re better”

“You shouldn’t be too carefree about these things”

“I’m not being carefree, I’m being confident”

“Or overconfident”

“Shut up”

“But I bet we’ll do good tonight, the song you wrote is pretty amazing in its’ own ways”

“I know, you don’t need to be so nice”

“And you don’t need to be so proud”

“What’s wrong with being proud?” she smacked him on his arm and laughed “I like being this way, it’s better than being nervous”

“I suppose that’s right too” he rubbed the spot where she hit him and turned to stand in front of her “But sometimes being proud can lead to one’s loneliness”

“It’s okay” she placed her hand on his shoulder “You won’t let me be alone now will you?”

“You’re right, I won’t leave you…” Yoshie blushed at what he said as he continued to speak “…like Kaijin said, you’d probably last about ten minutes before you pass out on the streets by yourself”

“And here I thought you were being compassionate!” she stomped on Fuuto’s foot and laughed at him when he moaned in pain “You know what, you’ve started to become more open nowadays”

“What made you say that…?” Fuuto said as he straightened himself up.

“Yeah, before you wouldn’t even bother making jokes and whatever. You were so quiet and barely talked at all unless we talked to you. Now you’re probably even throwing meaner remarks than Kaijin”

“Really now…I guess I never really noticed”

“Well, whatever way you act doesn’t concern me, but personally I like the ‘you’ now”

“Then I guess I shouldn’t change” he smiled while placing his hand on her head “Thanks”

“For what?”

“Nothing really, I just felt like saying it”

“What for?”

“Like I said nothing”

“Tell me”

“It’s nothing”

“C’mon tell me!”

“Quit acting like a kid”

Their little quarrel went on and on backstage, but they didn’t know they had a couple of spectators watching their little episode. Shikita and Takayuki had been talking out some things about getting another live after this one, and it was going pretty smoothly. This kept Takayuki from looking towards Yoshie and Fuuto’s direction, it just made him even more confused to see them talking like that so casually. He had made his decision that he wouldn’t interfere with them because he had the slightest feeling that Fuuto may have actually fallen for Yoshie, putting into consideration the way he has been treating her these past few days. This way he might actually lose her to another person, but it was alright with him because he didn’t feel like he needed to take her away. Just as long as she remained beside him then everything would be alright, without a doubt.

“…so for your next live I’m going to be talking to the variety show managers. They’ll be talking to me about putting you in their list of performers if they like you” said Shikita “I’d like you to come next time, to straighten a few things out so I could get a view from one of the band members since you’re the leader and all”

“Sure. Where’s the variety show going to be held?”

“It’s just going to be at a nearby mall. It’s close to your school actually. Do you know the mall that’s opening in your area there?”

“Oh yeah…So they’re going to have us be one of the entertainers for their opening night?”

“Pretty much. They’re doing it to attract customers”

“Then when do I come with you then?”

“Around Tuesday next week if that’s alright with you, it’ll be right after your school so there’s nothing to worry about”

“Alright”

“Out of curiosity Hanamoto-kun, are Takahashi-kun and Yoshie together?”

“What? No, of course not” Not yet…

“They seem pretty close, similar to the two of you. However what they had felt kind of different so I had assumed it”

“Almost like you did to Yoshie and me”

“Anyone would have thought that. So you mean to tell me Yoshie is still single?”

“Yes”

“Then that’s good” he said “I can give her a little something then”

“What do you mean?”

“Just something to push in the right direction, don’t worry, and rest assured I won’t do anything to her”

“I never said that…but I guess I kind of thought that”

“It’s alright, actually I sort of want to see Yoshie and Takahashi-kun get together. It might look good for them as a band”

“You sound sort of conniving”

“It’s a manager thing” he shrugged as he turned his back on Takayuki, slowly walking away before turning back to face him “You’re on in five minutes”

“Yeah…”

Once Shikita was completely out of Takayuki’s line of sight, he walked into a corner and smirked. His plan was coming into motion, and it might just actually initiate very, very soon.

People were buzzing about the stage, wondering who the band that was performing this night was. Violet Rose had never been heard of in their area, and it probably caused a commotion amongst the regular customers. Most of the people there however were pretty interested in the club because of the good music selection made by the manager, so having a new band perform must’ve surely meant that the new band was sure to be good. As the preceding band ended their song, people clapped for them. After a few moments, the lights were turned off and turned back on as the members of Violet Rose slowly made their way up the stage. Everyone was silent for a while, but when Kaijin had made the countdown to begin the song, the powerful guitar chords and bass notes began to fill the room with music as the crowd made their way towards the stage. Yoshie began to feel the rhythm in her mind as she looked to the crowd, excitement filling her every pore as she prepared her voice for the one performance she was extremely excited about.

My heart lingered through the shattered glass,

unknowing of the painful memories…

I would look at you but you walked away,

it stings me so and I bleed crying for sanity to

reproach me and my broken soul…

Please listen to my words slowly, and

please don’t ever forget my voice…

Waiting might’ve been an understatement

Looking away while I gaze at you is something different

Those few nanoseconds we get to have together

I treasure them until now…”

And with that, the crowd began to jump up and down, following Yoshie’s powerful voice as she sung every lyric almost perfectly. The whole club was practically taken in with their spell, their musical spell which bound even the most musically inept person. Nobody knew what they were doing, cheering for an unknown band, but they were loving every minute of it. Shikita watched them from behind the crowd as he held a video camera, capturing every minute of their performance. At first one would think he was smiling because his band was there capturing the crowd, but in his mind, there was something else that was going through thoughts.

“…Listen to my voice slowly clinging to your footsteps

I know that you don’t see those forgotten notes

Those were the letter I forgot to put in your locker

I secretly wished that you would accidentally read them

Waiting might’ve been an understatement

Looking away while I gaze at you is something different

Those few nanoseconds we get to have together

I treasure them until now

If telling you I loved you meant breaking apart,

I would rather have spent my days seeing you in the

distance…

Yeah…oh…in the distance baby…”

And ever since that one single performance, Violet Rose soon started to make their rise in the music industry.

Verse IV: “A New Face in the Crowd”

December 2nd, 2007 by escaflownelover

I really like the snow. As a young girl, winter had always been my favorite season. Others found this strange since I was a girl, but the reason why I love winter so much is because this was the season that harbors beginnings.

Last night Takayuki had to go home late at night because he and Yoshie had woken up at around eleven in the evening. Since there was school the next day he had to go back home in order to get his uniform and stuff. Yoshie told him that he could just stay overnight and wake up early so that he didn’t have to go out at such a late time, but he felt that it was safer to just leave and find wake up at the time he usually does to go to school.

The moment Yoshie woke up that morning she could’ve sworn she heard something stir in her brother’s room that night. Knowing that Haruko and Yuuki slept in the same room, it eventually came to her that they might have been doing something else besides sleeping. She giggled when that thought came to her head. Once ready to go to school, she bid her brother and Haruko goodbye and left the house. However she couldn’t help but feel as if she might’ve forgotten something, but she couldn’t seem to remember so she just shrugged it off. When she got on the train going to school, she checked her cell phone and sent Takayuki a text message, greeting him good morning. He wasn’t able to reply, so she just placed her phone back into her bag as she looked for her mp3 player, but unfortunately she couldn’t seem to find it anywhere in there. She began to panic, it was a very expensive model and it took her five months to earn for it herself. She pushed the things in her bag aside, frantically searching for the small gadget, and eventually she quit. It was nowhere to be found, and worst of all she had no idea where she might’ve lost it.

“Shit…” she cursed as she heard her stop coming closer. The last time she remembered using it was during her train ride home from Takayuki’s place, she had thought that maybe she dropped it and that maybe someone else might’ve picked it up by then. The thought about some stranger using her hard earned mp3 player and messing with it really began to bug the hell out of Yoshie, but there was no use crying over spilled milk, it was gone and there nothing she could do about it. It’d be worse if she had lost her cell phone, she would be in a complete state of panic if that happened.

On her way to school, she did not see any sign of Takayuki whatsoever, and that seemed really weird to her knowing that he wouldn’t miss school unless there was a proper reason. They weren’t in the same class, so it’d be difficult for her to find out if he was absent or late. Class seemed to move on forever to her, it was really boring listening to lectures and stuff she didn’t care about. Her main concern now was finding out whether Takayuki was there or not, he almost never absent. Now that she thought about it, she had just realized how lonely she really was, having Takayuki as her only friend in the whole school seemed really sad. When the first lunch bell rung, she immediately got out of her seat and walked towards Takayuki’s classroom. The moment she peeked into the room, there were students all messed up everywhere, talking and doing loads of cool things, and finally, she spotted Takayuki talking with a bunch of his female classmates, who seemed to be getting pretty close to him. Yoshie’s eyebrow twitched so she slid the door open and called out to him.

“Hey, Takayuki!” she said.

“Huh?” Takayuki looked to the door and saw his friend waiting for him outside his classroom. He waved at her and excused himself from his classmates, earning Yoshie really nasty looks from them.

“Looks like you’re having fun” said Yoshie as they leaned on the windowsill “I told you that you were popular with the girls”

“I kinda figured that” he said vainly.

“Hai, hai…” replied Yoshie “A lot of those girls seemed like they’d be your type, what’s keeping you from choosing one?”

“Yeah they’re cute, but I don’t particularly like any of them” he said.

“You’re being unbelievably picky” said Yoshie as they headed towards a nearby vending machine.

“What’s wrong with not liking any of those girls? They’re way too girly for me”

“Oh so you really like a punk or goth loli?”

“No” he said as he got two cans of hot coffee from the vending machine “There’s someone else…”

“What’d you say?” Yoshie asked excitedly “Who ‘someone else’?! Who? Who? Who?!”

“Jeez! Don’t get so worked up!” he said with slight tint of red appearing on his face “I haven’t quite worked out my feelings for her, so until I get it straight I’m not telling anyone”

“Jackass” she swore “And I opened up to you about Fuuto”

“Hey, don’t compare me to you, we’re two very different people” he took a sip from his coffee as they sat down under a tree in the schoolyard.

There were several students who would spend their time hanging out in the schoolyard during their lunch period or free period. Yoshie and Takayuki would usually hang out under that big willow tree and exchange stories whenever they felt like it, and whenever they stayed there, a small scent of winter plumbs would always be eminent in that very place.

“By the way Takayuki, how come I didn’t see you this morning?” asked Yoshie.

“I was late, my parents were fighting last night, so I could barely sleep at all last night”

“What?! Why?!” she exclaimed.

“They were talking about some financial problems, especially now that I told them I’m planning on attending a university”

“Wait, you didn’t tell me you were going to a university”

“Sorry, a lot has been happening lately and I didn’t want you guys to get too worried about me” he said, tossing his can to his side “I don’t want my parents to burdened by me, that’s why I decided to work and support myself after high school”

“Well I guess I have no right to butt into your business” she sighed.

“You really don’t like to meddle don’t you?”

“Would it help if I did?”

“You have a point”

“Told ‘ya” she smirked “But, was it bad? I mean you’re parents rarely fight at all”

“I thought you said you didn’t like to meddle”

“Meddling is completely involving yourself, this is helping”

“Whatever you say…” he sighed “It really gave me a shock, this was the first time I’ve seen them fight in over ten years. I bet even the moving fee isn’t that cheap either”

“Why don’t you get a part time job now? I bet that’d be a lot more efficient”

“It’s impossible, especially considering our band rehearsals and our possible future manager”

“Oh yeah I almost forgot!” Yoshie shot up “Aren’t we meeting Shikita-san later today?!”

“Don’t tell me you just remembered” said Takayuki.

“Yes…and to add to that I lost my mp3 player sometime last weekend” she sighed.

“No way! How could you lose something as expensive as your mp3 player?!”

“Oh c’mon! You didn’t need to shout it out loud!”

“Jeez, you can be such a ditz sometimes” he said, earning a smack from behind his head. He groaned as he held the back of his head with both hands “…and unladylike”

“Wow like you were being gentlemanly” Yoshie stood up and began to wipe the remnants of snow off her uniform “We should be getting back to class, lunch is gonna end soon”

“Yeah” Takayuki stood up after her “By the way Yoshie, when do you plan to tell Fuuto?”

“I don’t know…” she replied “Sometimes I feel like I don’t want to tell him at all. The truth is, I’m scared that if I tell him, our friendship would disappear…That’s why for now, I’m glad just being with him”

“Yoshie…”

“But what am I doing getting knocked up about it” she laughed “What I’m saying is it might look weird having two band members having a relationship”

“What a quick change of mood…” he muttered “Yoshie…”

“Yeah?”

“Fuuto has never had a girlfriend in his life, that I know. Also, he likes anyone who can understand him. That’s why I think there’s strong chance he’d fall in love with you”

“Takayuki…”

The school bell began to ring, so the two of them began to run back into the school, hoping that they wouldn’t get late.

Nee, Yoshie…the truth is, whenever I look at you I feel like I’m looking at my own reflection in a broken mirror. We’re exactly the same, the only difference is the one I love, is in love with someone else. For now, I can be happy, just chasing after you like this endlessly, and hoping for that light at the end of the tunnel.

Yoshie was waiting for Takayuki by the entrance of the school since he had a meeting to attend, being the class representative and all. The wall clock in front of the entrance clearly said it was six minutes past four, and they needed to get to Aoyama real soon. Strange as though he asked them to go to Aoyama, he must’ve been pretty rich as to invite them to a place like that. With his looks and attire it didn’t seem that hard to imagine. A few moments, Yoshie felt a hand place itself on the top of her head, she looked back and found Fuuto staring at her.

“Yo” he greeted without removing his hand.

“Fuuto! What are you doing here?” she asked him.

“I just thought I’d stop by” he replied.

“Don’t you have a job or something?”

“I had to make a delivery, and I’m off for today since we’re meeting up with Shikita-san later” he said rubbing Yoshie’s head teasingly.

“Quit that!” she said, slapping his hand away. Fuuto just smirked at her; it was rare to see him this playful, it kind of made him look cute. Yoshie glared at him, but then shrugged it off and said “I need to go to the bathroom, could you wait for Takayuki here?”

“Yeah, no problem”

“Thanks” she walked away from him as she made her way towards the bathroom. Fuuto watched her leave as he looked at his hand that touched her head.

Yoshie stood in front of the sink, washing her hands of any dirt left there. She opened her school bag and took out a dark colored shirt, she’d rather wear something civilian rather than her uniform. She quickly went into a stall and change. While she changed, she heard someone enter the bathroom, but she ignored it knowing it was none of her business.

“You know what, I am really sick and tired of seeing that Taniguchi” said the first voice.

“The second year?” said the second voice “What about her?”

“She bugs the hell out of me! I mean, she’s too close to Hanamoto-kun and that really bugs me. I bet she’s a slut who sells her body”

“I noticed that too. Hanamoto-kun must be crazy to hang out with a loner like her”

“I know! I mean, yeah she’s kinda cute and all, but compared to the others she’s nothing. Plus she looks kind of scary, and she’s not that friendly either”

“You know what, I heard that she’s not a virgin anymore. They say that she lost it to someone ten years older than her”

“Really?! I heard that she sold drugs and became a junkie in junior high…”

Yoshie pushed the stall door open and came out wearing her shirt and black jacket. There was silence the moment she came out, but she could feel as if those two girls were glaring really nastily at her. Both of them seemed to be from Takayuki’s class, one of them had really thick make-up on, and her gold highlights really brought out her classiness, the other one as pretty plain, but really pretty. If Yoshie could remember properly, they were two of the girls who were flirting with Takayuki.

“If you’re gonna talk about someone behind their backs, make sure you talk softer” she said coolly as she walked past them, not even glancing back “Bitches” was the last word that came out of her mouth as she left the bathroom. This wasn’t the first time she’s been bad-mouthed; she knew all the girls who liked Takayuki would usually give bad remarks about her. It has always been like this ever since she could remember, and she has gotten pretty used to it.

She got back to the school entrance and saw Takayuki and Fuuto standing there, they didn’t seem to be talking, but rather waiting. She smiled as she waved at them, walking towards her two band mates.

“Sorry I took so long” she said as she walked out of the school together with them. They all were excited to see Shikita’s word about them pretty soon.

Yoshie, Kaijin, Fuuto, and Takayuki were all waiting for Shikita in a fancy Japanese restaurant in Aoyama. The interior was pretty well-designed, it’s antique-Japanese structure and soft native music gave them the feeling of being rich folks. Their table was set in a private room wherein they could talk privately. It seemed he had a table reserved for them in case they got there earlier. A few minutes later, Shikita came in wearing a sleek dark suit, the usual stuff businessmen would wear. He left his coat with the busboy and walked towards their table, sitting down in front of them.

“Shall we get started then?” he said as the waiter gave them each a menu.

“Yeah, I guess” said Takayuki as they began to order their dinner. They began to talk about the common topics like how the payments would be divided when and where they could play, etc. Everything seemed to be going smoothly.

“At least now we’re going to be to play easily” said Yoshie.

“You said it. It’s tough getting some place to allow you to play” said Kaijin as he drank another cup of sake. His face seemed to be getting redder with every drink.

“Don’t you think you had enough?” said Takayuki “You already got drunk last night…”

“What do you care?” said Kaijin as he reached for a piece of sushi “I can drink as much as I want”

“Suit yourself”

“Oh by the way, Takayuki and Yoshie, you have to have these papers signed by your guardians. You could drop them off in my office tomorrow” he said as he handed them to the two, who both placed it neatly in their bags.

“Don’t worry, we’ll get them there” said Takayuki.

“Alright. Why don’t we have a toast then?”

“Yeah!” Kaijin cheered loudly “To our new manager!”

“Kampai!” they said together as they drank and ate the whole night. Basically they were being pretty friendly with each other now so that they’d be close in the future. However, Fuuto was the only one who didn’t seem as joyful as he should’ve been. What mostly disturbed him was that he seemed to be glancing- no make that glaring at Shikita, who seemed to be talking a lot with Yoshie who was seated right beside Fuuto.

“So Yoshie, do you have a boyfriend yet?” asked Shikita.

“No, and I’m not really planning on getting one either” she sternly replied.

“But you’re a pretty girl, there must be someone going after you”

“None either, at least not that I know of…”

“Shame though, if you were a few years older I’d go for a girl like you”

“W-what the hell are you saying?!” Yoshie blushed, but was mostly shocked about what Shikita just said.

“It’s true, that’s why…”

“Don’t you think your conversation with Yoshie is becoming more of flirting?” Fuuto cut off Shikita.

“Oi, Fuuto, he’s just fooling around, calm down a little” said Kaijin “Although I do have to question his taste in women”

“You shut the hell up Kaijin” said Yoshie “Nee, Fuuto, we should just celebrate tonight, so a little joke isn’t much of a big deal”

“…sorry” he muttered as he took a sip from his beer.

“Don’t worry about it, Takahashi-kun”

Yoshie let out a small smile and got up.

“Oi, where’re you going?” asked Takayuki.

“Bathroom” she replied. The bathroom down the hallway wasn’t as nearly as spectacular as the restaurant. It was clean yes, but a little too small. There were only two white cubicles and the creamish-white colored tiles didn’t make the room seem more elegant, not to mention the seemingly empty soap box by the two sinks. Yoshie was doing her business in one of the cubicles when two ladies came in.

“Hey, Koto-san, did you see that group of punks that came in here a while ago?” said the first one.

“Yes, the young man with the red streak on his hair was really handsome! If only I were younger I’d go after him no hesitation” said the second one “But these wrinkles just won’t stop coming, and the work here has gotten me really slumped”

So both of them are employees…I think I’ll just listen to what they have to say…Suddenly, Yoshie remembered the incident that happened at school this afternoon. Déjà vu much…

“You think so? I liked the American-looking one with the dreadlocks, he seems much more of my type”

“But the other guy with the brown hair wasn’t too bad himself”

“That girl with them looked pretty too, but what kind of a girl would hang out with a group of men by herself?”

“Maa…Yujirou-san, what era are you living in? It’s perfectly normal these days to see that” said woman called Koto “But, I wouldn’t be surprised it she lost her virginity to one of those boys with her…”

How rude! I haven’t even shown any of them my body yet! I’m not even planning to do that…! Why those bitches…!

Yoshie gathered her cool first before stepping outside the cubicle she was in. The two women were suddenly silenced by Yoshie’s exit from the cubicle. She walked towards the sink on the far end and washed her hands before wiping them off with tissue. She could see the two women with very embarrassed looks on their faces as she smirked in delight. Before exiting the bathroom, she turned back and sneezed, followed by a sly remark “Sorry, I’m allergic to bitches…” And with that she left them both flabbergasted.

The moment she came back, she began to enjoy herself with the rest of the crew. It looked like Kaijin was seriously drunk, so Fuuto and Takayuki were desperately trying to calm him down or at least make him stop screaming some weird things like “I want to sleep with a beautiful woman with big breasts!” or “I’ll take any woman! C’mon!”

“He really got himself drunk didn’t he?” Yoshie asked Shikita.

“Ye-yeah, it seems he’s a natural born player from the way he talks”

“You have no idea” she said sarcastically.

“Say, do you want me to give you a ride home? It’s getting pretty late and it might be dangerous for you to go home alone”

“Really? Thanks I’d like that!” she replied I wouldn’t have to spend for my transportation this way!

Fuuto, who was still struggling to calm down Kaijin, approached Shikita, leaving Takayuki alone to fight off Kaijin. He placed his hand on Yoshie’s shoulder while glaring Shikita really nastily. Yoshie was surprised by his sudden move and looked at both of them simultaneously saying “Oi, Fuuto, what’s wrong?”

“Sorry Shikita-san, but I’ll be taking her home tonight, you don’t need to go through the trouble” he said.

“But it’s already late, don’t you think its wiser to let her ride in a private rather than a public vehicle”

“I know exactly where she lives and I think her older brother would get upset if a total stranger was there to drop her off”

“He’ll eventually have to know me, it’s not like I’ll be kept a secret”

“You know what you two…” said Yoshie who looked rather annoyed “I can manage perfectly fine going my own way home thank you very much. Thanks for your offers, but I’m sure I’m not that stupid as to get lost like that”

And with that, she stormed out of the restaurant, kicking the flakes of snow at her feet as she passed by. She was muttering curses under her breath, she really hated being treated like a child. There were times when she wished she could shout that out to every living soul on the world, but of course that would seem a little exaggerated. Before she could curse any longer, she heard the soft sound of footsteps coming from behind her. She looked back and saw Shikita trying to catch up with her, so she stopped and waited for him.

“What do you want?” she said sternly.

“Hey Yoshie…” he said as he tried to regain his breath “Sorry about what happened a while ago. I guess it’s gonna take some time before Takahashi-kun gets used to me”

“No, it’s alright…” she said coolly “You didn’t have to come all the way here just to apologize”

“Nope, it’s really in my natural instinct to personally apologize to a woman” he said.

“Apology accepted then” Yoshie smiled.

“Oh, I almost forgot…” said Shikita as he reached for something in his back pocket.

“I believe this belongs to you” he handed her the mp3 player she had lost a few days ago. She quickly snatched it away from his hand, looking amazed that she had finally seen her lost item once again.

“Thanks! Where’d you find it?” she asked him.

“Let’s just say I saw it lying around somewhere”

“I owe you one, it’s really good that you found it. I don’t how to thank you enough for this”

“If that’s the case then I’ll be taking this as your gratitude” without warning, he leaned in closer until his face was barely an inch away from hers. Yoshie was about to have a panic attack, but she suddenly froze when she felt him kiss her slightly on her forehead.

“I don’t think that behavior between manager and client is appropriate in public” Fuuto had come out of nowhere. He was glaring really nastily at Shikita, but the young manager just smiled walked passed him.

“Sorry Takahashi-kun, I guess it was wrong to treat your girlfriend that way”

“She’s not my girlfriend” he shot back at him “I’m just warning you about inappropriate behavior”

“It’s okay Fuuto, Shikita-san was just fooling around, right Shikita-san?” Yoshie stood in between them.

“Yeah, exactly” Shikita replied “We should leave this be for now, the others might be waiting for us”

“I’ll just go on home, I’m sure that you guys have other things to talk about” she replied.

“I’ll come with you” said Fuuto.

“Then I guess we’ll see each other soon then” said Shikita “Yoshie, expect a message from me soon, good night”

“Yeah, good night” she replied as she walked side by side with Fuuto. The two of them didn’t say a word on their way to the bus station, mainly because they had no idea what to say to each other after what had happened. During their walk, they came across a lot of couples going in and out of hotels. This really was the season of love, and they felt really awkward about it. Using this as a topic for their conversation, Yoshie turned to Fuuto.

“You know there’re a lot of couples going around the city today” she said.

“Yeah, I noticed”

“You’d think they’d be working around this time. Who knew that they’d be out at this time”

“Yeah…”

“Yeah, pretty weird” Unfortunately it wasn’t a very good idea to use that topic for a conversation since they had only talked for less than one minute. It was a miracle how they got to the bus station so quietly knowing Yoshie to be a little loud-mouthed at times. They reached the bus stop, which apparently seemed to be empty, so they sat on the bench and patiently waited for the bus to arrive.

“Jesus, it’s getting really cold lately” said Yoshie as she breathed against her hands, hoping that her warm breath would heat her up.

“Just a minute” Fuuto stood up and walked towards a nearby vending machine. Yoshie was wondering what he was doing, and just as she was about to ask him, he came back holding two cans of hot coffee.

“Here” he handed her one.

“Thanks” she smiled as she received the drink, cupping it in her hands before opening it.

“Hey Yoshie, do you like Shikita?” he asked her, making her choke on half her drink.

“What the hell made you ask me that?!”

“You seem pretty close to him that’s why”

“What are you saying?”

“So by your guilty tone I’m guessing you do like him?”

“No way in hell! The one I like is–!” she stopped herself the moment a few cars passed by. She couldn’t bring herself to say it, at least not now. This was the cowardly side of herself which she hated so much, the side of herself that couldn’t even finish a sentence.

“There’s…someone else?” he asked her in surprise.

“Just forget it okay?” she said as she turned away from him.

“Hey…” he pulled her shoulders to make her face him, but it seemed to be too strong because his pull had caused them to collide against each other’s heads.

“Ow! What the hell–?!” Yoshie rubbed her forehead really hard, the impact on her seemed to be more painful than the one on Fuuto.

“Ow…” he complained, but then looked at Yoshie’s before continuing with his complaining, “Let me see it”

Fuuto moved her hands away from her face and replaced them with his own. His fingers were gently dangling on top of her forehead as he moved his thumbs up and down her forehead, massaging the bluish purple spot that was left there. Yoshie just sat there silently, letting him touch her face like he did so as she blushed with every move of his fingers.

“It doesn’t seem to bad, I’m sure it’d be gone by tomorrow” he said as he removed one of his hands, leaving the other one on her head.

“Th-thanks…” she said as she looked at him reluctantly “Nee, back there at the restaurant, why were you so pissed off with Shikita? I understand your past experience and all, but maybe you should try acting nicer around him”

“I’m sorry…I really don’t know what’s gotten into me…” he said as he placed his forehead on hers.

“He-hey! What’re you doing?”

He didn’t say a word, and neither did she. Honestly speaking neither of them knew what they were doing, it just felt like something pulled them closer to each other. So close that at that moment, neither of them wished to separated, it’s as if they were whispering words into each other’s minds.

“Yoshie, if ever I were to die right now, what would you do?” he asked her. She didn’t know what to answer at first, but then she closed her eyes and whispered into his lips.

“I’d put white orchids on your corpse and sing” she said as she moved away from him. Both of their eyes locked, their vision of sight was no longer lingering anywhere else. Their faces then began to slowly come closer, until the bus had come to board any passengers.

“The bus is here…” said Fuuto as she stood up.

“Ye-yeah…” she stood up without saying another word, slowly boarding the bus.

Back at Yoshie’s house…

“And what time is it exactly right now?” Yuuki squeezed Yoshie’s head the moment she stepped into the Taniguchi household. Yuuki was pretty annoyed that Yoshie came home at eleven in the evening, even though it was kind of normal for her to do so nowadays.

“What-is-your-problem?!” she scowled at him as she escaped form his grasp.

“So, how’d the thing with the manager go?”

“What a quick change of reaction…” she mumbled “Well we got a sweet deal, we don’t really have to pay him, he’ll be getting forty percent of each income we get from a gig”

“Wait, so you guys are going pro now?”

“Not exactly, we’re not gonna a lot of nice places to perform since we’re not all that famous yet”

“Then if that’s so…” he started to emit a very protective aura that was giving off really bad vibes to Yoshie “I want to meet him next time, and make sure that he isn’t one of those people who run off with other people’s money”

“I’m sure he’s not like that”

“ Did he touch you or show any affections towards you?”

“Jeez no!” she screamed, but she suddenly remembered the kiss he gave her on the forehead.

“Then why are you so guilty?” he asked “Something did happen, right?”

“For the last time, no!” she stormed into her room, locking it for the time being.

Why do I have such a nosy brother?! Jeez! She took off her clothes and put on her sleeping attire, which were just an oversized shirt and a pair of pants.

Wow…what happened there back at the bus stop? It was really weird, and Fuuto wasn’t acting like himself. And for a moment I thought we were actually gonna…gonna…kiss…Why’d he do that? I know it must be the saké, it has to be the reason why he wasn’t like himself, but…a part of me really wanted that kiss to continue…Oh jeez Yoshie get some sleep! You’re acting really stupidly!

And with that, she slept.

Meanwhile, Fuuto seemed to be awake in his own bed, staring blankly at the ceiling as he touched the spot where he and Yoshie had bumped into each other. Strange though, because he had only drunk a couple of servings of saké that night, he couldn’t have been drunk. Could he?

Verse III: “Those Painful Days”

December 2nd, 2007 by escaflownelover

There were times when I would think that I’d want everything to be perfect; I’d want everything to remain the way they were. However I had to accept that with every passing moment comes change. Until now I believe that, but I sometimes wished that Violet Rose would remain an unknown band.

Yoshie barely got any sleep that night. Her mind kept straying off to random thoughts starting from their previous meeting with a hopefully new manager, new songs, and most of all Fuuto’s past. She had never imagined him to have such a tragic past, and there seemed to be no way she could say that she understood him when she didn’t. The only thing she could think of was to make sure that Fuuto would never be sad while he stayed in Violet Rose. Her head peeked from underneath the bed sheets as she glanced at her alarm clock, it was already ten fifty two, but she still felt too lazy to get up. Haruko called Yoshie from the other side of the door saying “Yoshie-chan, are you up yet? Your breakfast is gonna get cold if you don’t come down”’

Oh c’mon…why does Haruko have to act like my mother all the time…Yoshie stood up from the bed and put on her dull blue house robe and slippers. Haruko came in all of a sudden wearing a huge smile on her face “Good morning sleepy head!”

“G’morning…” said Yoshie followed by a small yawn.

“Nee Yoshie-chan, your friend called you up an hour ago, Takayuki I think…”

“Takayuki? Jeez, what does he want at this time…” Yoshie walked past Haruko, who in return followed her.

“So, is Takayuki your boyfriend or something?” she asked.

“What? No, what made you think that?”

“It’s my sisterly instinct” she said as she placed an arm around Yoshie’s shoulders.

“You’re not my sister”

“Waah! You’re so cold Yoshie-chan! Onee-chan is just trying to get closer to imouto-chan…” Haruko faked a weeping sound, but Yoshie was way too sleepy to care about her so-called sister’s weeping. She reached for the phone downstairs and dialed Takayuki’s phone number.

“Hello?” Takayuki’s voice was heard from the other side of the line.

“Oi, Takayuki, Haruko-san said you called”

“Oh Yoshie, it’s you. Listen, Shikita-san called me last night, he said that he wanted to meet us tomorrow after school at a sushi bar in Aoyama. Kaijin knows where it is, so we’ll be meeting him around five at the studio. How’s that sound?”

“Sounds fine to me, is Fuuto coming?”

“Yeah, he knows where it is too. But he says he’s got something to do so he’ll just catch up”

“Oh I see…” Yoshie then had an idea “Hey, wanna come over? I’ve got nothing to do today”

“What’s with the sudden invitation?”

“Hey, it’s not like this is the first time you’ve been here”

“Fine, mind if I bring Fuuto and Kaijin along?”

“Eh? Fine…come to think of it, neither of them has been here yet”

“I just rented a horror movie, maybe we could watch it. We haven’t been hanging out like bums lately”

“Cool, see you then”

Yoshie put down the phone onto the receiver and let out a heavy sigh. This was definitely the first time she invited Fuuto and Kaijin to her place. It wasn’t like she was worried or anything, but the womanly instinct of insecurity of having men in their homes began to put thoughts in her head. She quickly shook it off; those three were practically her only friends. It made her wonder sometimes what it could’ve felt like to have female friends. Yuuki came from behind and karate-chopped Yoshie on the head.

“Ow! Jeez! You could be a little more gentle!” she complained as she rubbed her head.

“What’s the idea inviting people over randomly?”

“What do you care? You’ve already seen Fuuto and the others. Besides, it’s a Sunday! You should relax once in a while”

“I’m not like you. Toudai is really tough, so I need to study almost everyday”

“Haruko-san got higher marks than you again didn’t she?”

“Shut up” Yuuki hit Yoshie again on the same spot “Haruko went out just now to buy us some food, you better thank god she did”

“And you left her alone? That’s very responsible of you as her boyfriend”

“And what do you care exactly…?” Yuuki began to squeeze his fists against Yoshie’s skull as she bean to force his hands off her.

“Get off’a me!!!”

“I’m gonna see just how small that brain of yours is” he said menacingly.

Fifteen minutes later…

Yoshie and Yuuki sat down on the couch watching television, but bickering from time to time on who would get the remote and what channel they should watch. Yoshie got stuck watching a documentary about old European architecture since her brother was interested in these things. Yuuki is an architecture major in Toudai, and he plans to find work soon.

“Nee, Onii-chan, how come you fell in love with Haruko-san?” Yoshie asked.

“Eh? What’s with the sudden question?”

“I’m just curious damn it”

“Have you fallen in love?”

“Oh shut up! Does everything personal I have to ask you have anything to do with my personal life?”

There sudden silence, but Yuuki soon broke it as he leaned back on the couch, letting out a loud sigh as the television began to show images of the old English castles.

“I don’t really know why I began to fall for her, but as far as I can remember it started in my last year of high school. She was really noisy and annoying, and she would get on my nerves most of the time. There was this carefree atmosphere around her all the time, even during exams she would always seem so happy-go-lucky while everyone else was busy cramming. Afterwards she would somehow miraculously somehow make it into the top three of the whole batch. That really bugged me, and I wanted to get to the bottom of it. It turns out she would simply study in advance and ask the teachers questions after class. A few days later she began to talk to me and stuff, it turns out she liked me, but I turned her down…”

“Why’d you do that?!”

“Hold on I’m not done yet!” said Yuuki “She seemed not too upset about it, she went on as she normally would, but her eyes seemed to look pretty sad whenever our eyes met. Under some circumstances we began to talk to each other, before I knew it I was asking her out, but she rejected me”

“Moron…” Yuuki hit her on the head once more.

“Do you want me to continue or not?”

“Alright! Fine! Sheesh!”

“I guess that she felt pretty upset that the only time I got to talk to her was when I dumped her, so I aid I’d make it up to her. Before I knew it I guess I…”

“You were all lovey-dovey with her weren’t you?” Yoshie teased him. However he didn’t react this time, instead he merely smiled and rubbed Yoshie’s head.

“You’re still a kid you know”

“Whatever” Yoshie stood up and headed towards the front porch “I’m just gonna get some air”

She stood on the white blanket of snow covering the whole front porch of her home. It was colder today than it was yesterday and she could see her breath whenever she breathed through her mouth. She began to contemplate on her previous conversation with her brother, whenever she imagined the process of how he and Haruko got together, she couldn’t help but feel a little envious of them. She couldn’t understand how they were able to tell each other how they felt so quickly like that, and she has known Fuuto for almost a year now but she hasn’t even given him a sign about how she felt for him.

The winter would calm her down whenever she’d think about her deep feelings for Fuuto. There was never a day she had wished that they had never met each other. I really wished that everyday, I would be able to tell him about how I feel about him. Back when all we knew was each other’s names and existences, that was the time I really wanted to tell him, but as the distance between us becomes shorter, I felt that telling him might only make the distance even longer than it used to be. If that’s the case, then isn’t it that I’m the one who’s just scared…?

“Yoshie-chan!” Haruko came back from the store and seemed to be excited to see Yoshie. This time however, she didn’t come home alone. Fuuto, Takayuki, and Kaijin were following behind her, all looking at Haruko hugging the young girl they were there to visit. Fuuto was wearing his usual black leather jacket and tattered dull jeans, Takayuki was wearing his dark blue coat, which reached up to his knees, however he left it open in the middle revealing his red shirt that had black smears all over it, accompanied by a pair of torn-up blue jeans. Kaijin was simply wearing a dark gray jacket and a pair of plaid red pants.

“Yoshie-chan, I didn’t know you had such good looking friends! You had one-chan surprised! Kyaa! This is the first time I’ve seen your band, it seems so cool that you’re the only female in the band” she said as Yoshie tried to struggle out of Haruko’s grip.

“Yoshie, I didn’t know you had such a cute sister” said Kaijin as he approached her “I’m Yamamoto Kaijin, Violet Rose’s drummer, 21 years old, pleased to meet you”

“Tsuhara Haruko, Taniguchi Yuuki-kun’s girlfriend” she smiled, obviously signaling to Kaijin her relation to the Taniguchi family.

“Ah…I see…” Kaijin stepped back and scratched the back of his head “Sorry, I guess it makes sense, you both don’t look very similar” Kaijin earned a smack on the head because of his last remark. Yoshie kicked him from behind and made him fall face first into the snow.

“If that’s the greeting you give someone then get the hell outta here!” she yelled.

“Oh c’mon Yoshie-chan, it was just a joke” said Haruko as she helped Kaijin up.

“We’re used to it” said Takayuki “Nice to meet you Haruko-san, Yoshie has told us so much about you”

Actually Yoshie would usually describe Haruko as an overly dramatic person, but a very caring one at that, a complete opposite to her strict and hot-tempered older brother. Usually when she would tell this to them they would say that it’s strange that they stayed together for so long. Yoshie just thought it was because they filled up what the other was missing.

Yoshie invited them into her house and Yuuki just had this weird forced smile appearance when they came in, mainly because they all looked like punks, but he was pretty used to it considering he’s been around Yoshie for so long. He greeted Takayuki, then Kaijin, and finally Fuuto. Takayuki and Yuuki were good friends when they were kids, more like Yuuki was the one who would sometimes tutor Takayuki whenever he had problems in school. Yuuki would sometimes give nasty looks towards Kaijin though because Yoshie ‘slipped’ to Yuuki about Kaijin’s small greeting with Haruko.

“Haruko and I will be in my room, so you don’t need to bug us too much” said Yuuki as he guided Haruko towards his room, holding her hand as he walked upstairs.

“Don’t worry Onii-chan, we won’t peek” said Yoshie teasingly.

“Moron!” screamed Yuuki.

“Oh c’mon Yuu-kun, let it go” Haruko and Yuuki disappeared into the upstairs portion of the house, leaving the four friends to enjoy themselves downstairs.

“They look just like you said Yoshie” said Kaijin.

“I told you so, and I don’t think you should get involved with Haruko-san. Onii-chan really likes her, and so do I, so if you try anything Kaijin you’ll get more than snow in your face” Yoshie threatened Kaijin, looking at him murderously.

“It’s okay, I know more than that. Besides I honestly though she was your sister, she kept saying that you were her little sister”

“She loves to call me that…I won’t be surprised if Onii-chan proposed to her after college”

Takayuki and Yoshie sat down on the living room floor while Fuuto sat on the couch and Kaijin on the armchair nearby. Takayuki brought out a couple of movies, one was a horror movie while the other one was a dramatic comedy movie. All of them agreed to watch the dramatic movie first so that they could watch the horror movie at night. Before they started, Yoshie and Fuuto went into the kitchen to prepare some snacks.

“Hey Fuuto, do you think popcorn seems nice?” she asked him as she reached into the cupboard, rummaging through the stocks of food.

“Sounds good, I’ll prepare the drinks” he said as he looked into the refrigerator “Do you want beer or should we just make some tea?”

“It’s pretty cold, maybe some tea would do nice” said Yoshie, who was still looking for the popcorn packs. It seemed they were placed really high above the cupboard, it was probably her brother that placed it there. She mumbled some swears and tiptoed on her feet, trying to reach for it. Out of nowhere, Fuuto stood behind her and reached for it himself. His body was pretty close to Yoshie’s back as he reached for it. It took a while for him to get it, but then he placed it in her hands as he left her there.

“Thanks” she said as she let out a blush. He continued to help her make tea as she put the popcorn into the microwave, waiting for it to heat up. As he poured hot water into the cups, Yoshie looked at him with a strange look on her face. It seemed weird to see Fuuto helping out with things such as making tea and whatnot. That wasn’t the only thing that was bugging her. Fuuto’s sudden movement against her back kept rewinding in her head, and when he placed his arms around her to put the box in her hands, it kind of felt like he wanted to do it. However that thought was quickly denied by Yoshie’s inner self. She didn’t think that Fuuto would be interested in her, she just couldn’t see it happening. The alarm on the microwave rung, so she opened it and found the popcorn to be finished, so she put her hand inside and reached for it, but the bag was still hot, so she burned her finger while doing so.

“Ow!” she said while she held her index finger. She placed it her mouth, cooling it down in the process. Fuuto came to her side and took her hand where the injured finger was and placed a cold damp piece of cloth on it.

“It help when you do this” he said as he held her hands while placing the damp cloth over it. Yoshie blushed when Fuuto touched her hand, it didn’t seem quite at all like Fuuto to do this, but it made Yoshie happy that he cared anyway.

“Nee, Fuuto…” she began “Thanks”

“It’s nothing, you don’t have to worry about it” he said with his cold yet endearing face. Yoshie didn’t know why she fell for him in the first place, but she really loved the way that he acted towards her. She loved the way he talked to her in his deep and nonchalant voice, the way he would help her with small things like a small wound or even a tiny little scratch, his existence seemed to be more than just a mere crush to Yoshie.

Back in the living room, Takayuki and Kaijin were still figuring out how to use Yoshie’s DVD player, which wouldn’t seem to turn on. Takayuki looked around the devices and checked for loose plugs or something. Kaijin looked at his friend and frowned, letting out a loud sigh in the process.

“Oi Takayuki, are you seriously gonna give up that easily?” said Kaijin.

“With what? This stupid DVD player?” he said jokingly.

“Don’t play dumb, you know what I mean. It’s obvious she likes him, and I can see that he has also been changing his actions around her. I’m not that dull as not to notice something like that” he said strictly “I know what you see in her, she seems to care about you a lot too so…”

“Enough already” Takayuki cut off Kaijin “Both of them are very important to me, I won’t ruin our friendship for something as petty as this”

“From the way you say it, I don’t think it’s really ‘petty’ as you say it to be” said Kaijin “I really don’t understand you guys…”

“Considering it’s you, I second the motion”

Takayuki finally got the DVD player to turn on, however it was a sudden silence that overcame the two. Takayuki stared at the snowy scenery outside the glass window, his green eyes would seem like they were counting each snowflake that fell from the cold gray skies. He leaned back on his hands as he sit in a cross leg position, emptily staring at the blank television screen. The memories of his childhood with Yoshie had begun to flood his mind, all echoing endlessly with laughter.

I wonder, how long has it been? I don’t know if these feelings I have for her are merely because of our strong friendship or maybe because I admire her. I just know that these feelings aren’t just feelings of friendship…my life is unbelievably bittersweet.

“Takayuki!” Yoshie jumped out of nowhere from behind him, holding a huge bowl of popcorn in her left hand. She placed the bowl on the coffee table and placed her arms around Takayuki’s neck “Did you get it to work yet?”

“Yes, I just did, and for the love of god get off me” he pulled her arms away from his neck as Fuuto reappeared from the kitchen, holding a tray of hot green tea. He placed them beside the popcorn and sat down opposite Kaijin on the couch. Yoshie moved closer to the coffee table and took a cup of tea.

“Hey, has Shikita-san said anything yet?” Yoshie asked Takayuki.

“Nothing yet, all we can do now is hope for a positive answer tomorrow” he said as he pushed the play button on the DVD player “Okay now, one sappy love movie coming right up”

“Oh c’mon, it seems pretty interesting” said Yoshie.

“Hence it comes from the sole female within the room” said Kaijin as he gulped down his tea “Better not cry Yoshie”

“Okay Kaijin, this is my house so I can kick you out whenever I want to right now” she threatened.

“Idiot” he replied, throwing a pillow at Yoshie. She merely threw it back and watched the movie together with her friends.

The movie was just as sappy as they thought it would be. It was about a woman who couldn’t find her true love and was being helped by her friends look for her true love. She went on blind dates and sometimes it would turn out horribly wrong. However in the end she finds her love in one of her closest friends, who has been pining for her since the time they met. Yoshie found it pretty sweet and a little interesting, but she had no idea that there was someone in the room who could relate to the movie more than anyone else in there right now.

A few hours passed when they finally realized that the movie was over. By the time it was finished they mostly laughed at the cheesy lines from the movie, they knew that those kinds of things don’t happen in real life and they were acting very sarcastic about each scene. Kaijin and Takayuki had been reenacting some of the scenes, pretending to be a gay couple and that made them laugh a lot. They had gotten tired of the tea and made good with the beer in the refrigerator, and Kaijin, being a pretty heavy drinker, got drunk first before any of them. Seeing as they couldn’t leave their drummer like that, Fuuto volunteered to accompany him home, which to the others’ dismay was very annoying because they still wanted to have some more fun. However they couldn’t seem to argue to they just left those two to leave. Night was nearing, and it was already dark before either of them realized it. Yoshie and Takayuki sat beside each other on the couch, each seeming a little tired.

“Since we’re here, we might as well watch the movie you brought” said Yoshie.

“I agree, too bad Kaijin and Fuuto won’t be able to see it though” said Takayuki as he sat up and inserted the disc into the player “This movie seemed really good too”

“Whatever, its their loss” said Yoshie as Takayuki propped down beside her. Neither of them bothered to turn on the lights because to them it seemed more fun to watch a horror movie in the dark. Only the light from the television screen was giving light to the room, and it looked like neither Haruko nor Yuuki were coming down any minute now. During the middle of the movie, Yoshie placed her head on Takayuki’s shoulder, but he didn’t stir, he knew that there wasn’t any special meaning to her gesture.

“Nee, Takayuki…” she said softly.

“What?” he asked her.

“I think…I think that I may be deeply in love…with Fuuto…” she said in an almost whisper, but Takayuki heard her loud and clear. The moment she said those words he could feel a painful pang in his heart that just clenched up all his insides, squeezing the life out of him. He wanted to shout out all his emotions and tell Yoshie just how much she meant to him, not as a friend, but as a woman. He didn’t say any of those things he felt, but rather smiled and placed an arm around her shoulders.

“I knew that already” he said calmly.

“What the-?! How?!” Yoshie exclaimed as she looked up at him.

“I’m not that dense you know. You treat him a lot differently than Kaijin and me, it’s only a little but you’re nicer to him. Plus, I’ve known you too long” he said as he grinned at her.

“Am I that obvious…?” she said to herself, looking away at her friend’s grinning face “How long have you known?”

“It took me a while, but I guess it was a few days after he joined Violet Rose”

“You’ve known that long and you didn’t even mention it to me?”

“I didn’t see a reason why I should” he said as he took his arm off her shoulders and turned sideways to face her “But I thought you should know, that I’m gonna support you. So I can assure you that I’ll help you find a way to be his girlfriend”

“Idiot” Yoshie pushed him lightly on the shoulders and laughed lightly “You really are a great friend Takayuki”

“Hey, what can I say? We’ve known each other since we were in diapers, of course I’d have no choice either than to help you out. Besides, I’m sure you have a great chance of being with him” he smiled teasingly.

“Shut up, I don’t even know if he likes me. I don’t want to tell him knowing that he’ll just dump me one way or the other, so that’s why I’m working up to become closer to him”

“That is such a grade school strategy” he said “But it’s very effective”

“In what way?”

“Well, I Fuuto doesn’t normally talk to people that much. However if you’re closer to him, he’ll open up to you more”

“I guess I kind of noticed that too”

“Well at least you’re not that dense” he said “I can tell you this much though, the closer you are to Fuuto the more likely he’ll fall for you”

“Thanks for the advice” she said “You know, you seem a lot like a brother than a friend to me. I like that about you”

“Well you’re a lot like a little sister to me” he said as he patted her head “So I can assure you that aniki won’t leave you”

“If that’s the case then imouto-chan will be in your debt” she said as she leaned beside him “Now, let’s continue this movie”

“Sure”

Due to their previous conversation, they had missed a lot of the movie, so they had to rewind it up to the part where they last remembered watching it. They both seemed pretty pissed because then they knew a part of what was going to happen. They both got a huge blanket and out it around themselves since it was getting pretty cold that night, eventually, they had fallen asleep while watching the movie.

“Nee, Yuu-kun, are they finished yet?” Haruko asked Yuuki. They were both sitting beside each other by the small table in the middle of Yuuki’s room, and they seemed to be studying considering the numerous amounts of papers and books on the table.

“I don’t know, I’ll go check” he said as he stood up, followed by Haruko who took his wrist as she stood beside him.

“I’ll go with you” she smiled as she gave him a small kiss on the cheek, which made him a little red.

“Fine” he said as she held unto his arm, slowly making their way downstairs. They heard the movie playing, but the two viewers seemed to be fast asleep by that time. Yuuki sighed as he switched off the television, but his gaze soon averted to the two people huddled together on the couch. Yoshie had head placed on Takayuki’s shoulder, while he had his hand wrapped around Yoshie’s. Yuuki merely smiled as he put away the cups and cans of drinks on the coffee table. Haruko giggled at the sight of them as she pulled the blanket closer to the two friends.

“They make such a good couple” said Haruko “Are they together?”

“Nope, trust me, I’d know” he said as he led Haruko into the kitchen.

I don’t know if it was Takayuki that held my hand that night or if it was me who did it, but all I can say was that, it was very warm and comfortable. I had begun to think that Takayuki really meant more to me than just a childhood friend, he was someone who meant more than that. His hand that held me that night, felt like something else, but I didn’t really understand what it was.

That night, Fuuto was busy writing some sort of music composition that he seemed to be really working hard on. His place was just a small unit one bedroom unit in an apartment building. He sat down on his bed, working out chords on his guitar, strange because he’d usually practice his bass guitar. Ever since his accident when he was younger, he strived harder than ever to practice any instrument he could play. After he learned the guitar, he eventually learned how to play the bass and even began to write his own music. He wanted to attend a university; unfortunately he did not have the money or the intelligence to be able to attend it, especially since he supported himself.

His gaze turned to the two frames sitting on his bedside table, one was a picture of him and his parents, both smiling contentedly and warmly, and him right smack dub in the middle, waving his childish arms around. The second photograph was a picture of Violet Rose during their first live performance together. He took the frame in his hands and examined it closely. The four of them were lined up perfectly on stage, all smiling after a hard day’s work. On the far right Kaijin was smiling with his arm around Takayuki, who was bent slightly due to Kaijin’s extra weight on him, Yoshie was next, and she was holding the microphone in her hand, smiling widely at the camera as her hand placed itself on Fuuto, who was next to her in the picture. Fuuto smiled at himself, his finger began to trace over the glass, which protected the picture. It went from Kaijin to Takayuki, and then eventually, stopped at Yoshie’s. He traced the outline of her face, his eyes showing a bright gleam in them. Realizing what he was doing, he put the picture frame back on the table and took out his bass guitar, slowly playing the song that Yoshie had written.

Verse 2: “Fuuto’s Past, Yoshie’s Love”

December 2nd, 2007 by escaflownelover

I never really knew what hurting someone felt like. There were times when I wished I knew what they people felt whenever they had to endure painful emotions in their own. Then I thought, I couldn’t reach out to them because I had no idea how their pain felt like. But, there were times I wish I could just take it away.

When morning came, Yoshie got up and went back home in her school uniform. The weather had died down a bit, but there was still snow falling from time to time. Takayuki was insisting that he’d take Yoshie home, but she begged to differ and in the end he lost to her will. As she listened to her mp3 player on the train, she looked out the window. For some reason she felt something good was about to happen that day. When she heard her stop coming close, she stood up from her seat. One her towards the exit, she took a look at her mp3 player and saw that it was nearly out of batteries. She let out a loud sigh and packed it back inside her pocket. When the train came to a stop, she found her brother waiting for her outside by the waiting area.

“Oi, oniichan!” she greeted as the train doors opened. In her rush, she bumped into someone as she exited. She apologized and ran to her older brother nearby. However, she didn’t realize that she had dropped her mp3 player, which was coincidentally picked up by the stranger. When he was about to give it back, the train doors closed.

“Interesting…” the stranger mumbled as he pocketed the gadget, gazing at the young girl bumped into.

Smack!

Gt43h“Ow! What was that for?!” Yoshie scowled at her older brother.

That was for coming back at this time” he said sternly.

“It’s only 12:00…” she protested.

“You told me you’d be home by ten!”

“Jeez! You know you could’ve just mailed me through my cell phone!”

“My phone’s batteries were dead! You could’ve called the house!”

“You know you’re acting like my mom…”

“What was that?” Yuuki squeezed the sides of Yoshie’s head, allowing her to squeal in pain.

“Oi! Quit it will ‘ya!” she said as she pulled away from his fists “Jeez, you’d think I was three with the way you’re treating me”

“Is it that wrong to worry about my little sister?”

“Psh, let’s just go already” Yoshie lead the way out of the train station, climbing down the stairs they’d usually climb down.

“When is your next live performance?” Yuuki suddenly asked.

“Hmm…we haven’t had any news yet. We’ve been looking for a place to go live for almost five days, but no luck”

“You’ll think of something, as your brother I think that your band has a future really”

Yoshie moved away comically from Yuuki, and said in a very sarcastic tone “Who are you?”

“Would it hurt to compliment you guys once in a while?”

Sigh…I just hope Kaijin gets with the manager thing already. He hasn’t told us much about this guy he was gonna talk to”

“Sometimes I don’t know if those other band mates of yours are dependable”

“Only Kaijin”

“What about that ‘Takahashi’ guy you keep talking about?”

“Fuuto? Well, I don’t really know…I guess better than Kaijin”

“Ah…Oh yeah, Haruko came over, she’ll be staying over tonight. Do you have any plans later tonight?”

“Oh…I guess you’d want me to leave tonight so you could be alone with Haruko-san?”

“What the-?!”

“Don’t worry, I’ll probably be out late tonight. We have band practice again later at three, so you can stay with Haruko-san as much as you like”

Smack!

“You’re too young to be thinking things like that”

“I wasn’t saying anything like that, maybe you’re just perverted”

“Geh…! Why you little…” Yuuki’s blush was visibly seen, as well as the annoyance in his eyes.

“Onii-chan can be so obvious sometimes”

Yet again, Yuuki squeezed Yoshie’s head with his fists until his little sister began to practically scream out her pain. He let go of her and smirked as they continued bickering all the way home.

“Yoshie-chan!” a tall woman around Yuuki’s age jumped out of the door and hugged Yoshie tightly. This woman was no other than Tsuhara Haruko. Her short black hair was very silky and her eyes shone of a bright green color. She stood three inches above Yoshie wearing a white sweater and blue jeans. Although she dressed simple, her looks seemed to shine upon whomever she met.

“H-hi Haruko-san…” Yoshie managed to wiggle out of her brother’s girlfriend’s grip.

“Hey Haruko, you’re making a scene”

“I just haven’t seen Yoshie-chan in a long time, of course I’d miss her”

“I’ll be going inside if you two won’t” Yoshie walked past them and entered the house, taking off her shoes in the process. She headed towards the kitchen and rummaged through the refrigerator.

“Nee, Yoshie-chan, when is your next live?” asked Haruko excitedly.

“Nothing yet, don’t worry, we’ll inform you once we find out”

“If you need any help, I know someone who needs a band to play for their party”

”Really?!”

“Yeah. My friend tried to book a couple of bands, but they turned her down saying that they had other gigs. I told her about you guys and they were thrilled about you”

“Hey Haruko, you can’t just go on and let them go to college parties like this! Besides, Yoshie’s only high school!”

“Oh don’t be silly, besides you’ll be there too. You’ve got one hell of a sister complex”

“I do not!”

The phone began to ring, so Yoshie escaped the bickering couple. They would usually have petty fights like these, but they’d soon make up in about half an hour. Whenever Yoshie’s parents were gone, these two would usually step in and take the lead as substitute parents. They would be a little annoying at first, but they were pretty fun to hang out with. She actually wouldn’t mind having Haruko as her sister-in-law.

“Hello?” Yoshie answered the phone.

“Yoshie? It’s me” Yoshie could immediately recognize Takayuki’s voice on the other side of the phone line.

“Hey there Takayuki”

“Kaijin just called! He said he’s got some big news about the manager thing, he wants to meet us at the ramen restaurant we went to last night!”

“Really?! What time?”

“Around two or two thirty…” Yoshie turned to her own clock and saw the time, 12:15 “I’m at Kaijin’s place right now discussing it. Sorry but could I ask a favor of you?”

“What is it?”

“You see I was gonna go to the guitar store with Fuuto today around 1:00, but I’m kinda busy right now so do you mind going with him? He doesn’t really know where it is and he has the receipt so I could claim my guitar, don’t ask how come he has it. But would you please do this one favor for me?”

“N-no problem” said Yoshie who seemed quite flushed at what Takayuki just said. She was a little nervous at the thought of spending an entire two hours alone with Fuuto. Hang on, we’ve become a little closer these past few months, I’m sure we could talk normally… “I’ll go there now”

“Thanks a lot Yoshie, he doesn’t have a cell phone so I couldn’t call it quits. I promise I’ll pay you back”

“One box of dango. Make sure the sauce is sweet” she said sternly as she hung up. I guess I should be happy he gave me this chance.

Takayuki put down the phone back to the receiver in Kaijin’s apartment unit. Kaijin was dressed in a black shirt that had yellow text on it that said ‘Don’t look down’ and a pair of dark ripped up jeans while smoking a cigar. He seemed to be looking at Takayuki very strictly. Takayuki simply sat down on the floor opposite to Kaijin and put up the sleeves of his white long-sleeved shirt, which had fake blood stains on it. Another puff of gray smoke and Kaijin spoke.

“I think you and her would make a better looking couple” he said as he continued to smoke.

“You think so?” said Takayuki “I never really imagined myself having her”

Snow began to fall slowly once more over the small city. Yoshie was patiently waiting outside a family restaurant for the arrival of a good friend. Her hair was tied in a high ponytail, and there were a couple of locks of purple hair extensions she had placed in her hair. Her brown trench coat covered her long-sleeved black and white stripped shirt and black leather skirt. A pair of knee-high leather boots perfectly matched outfit. Her fingers and wrists were decorated with spiked wristbands and metal rings; and lastly, her three piercings on each ear.

There seemed to be no reason for her to be excited about this one meeting, but no matter from what angle she saw this situation the mere fact that she’ll be alone with Fuuto. She would have to maintain the friendly atmosphere they would usually have when they were together. Fuuto is her first love, but there shouldn’t be any reason why she should treat him differently. If ever he were to fall in love with her, she’d want him to fall in love with her true self.

Amongst the passing crowd, while leaning on the metal railing, Yoshie could feel the anticipation of seeing Fuuto. Just as the small snowflakes fell on her head, she could feel them melt and turn into liquid against her body heat. This was the very effect she wanted to do to Fuuto, to melt away his cold endeavor, to let him open up to her more often and maybe know more about him. This was the simple wish she would ask for this snowy afternoon. From a short distance, she saw the approaching figure of Fuuto who silently walked towards her. She raised her arm and gave him a small wave, he looked to be slightly surprised, but he simply waved back wearing a small smile on his face. It was nice to see him warmly smile like that, and yet Yoshie began to want that smile all to herself, a unique smile that only she could cherish and devote to her own heart. It was already 1:10 when Fuuto arrived.

“What happened to Takayuki?” asked Fuuto as he stood before the young girl. He was still wearing his leather jacket, which was zipped up, to his neck. His black pants had chains hanging on the sides, which complimented the silver studs he was wearing on his ears, as well as the single one on the side of his nose. His bass was hanging within its case on his back. He had more piercings that Yoshie did though.

“Something came up, so he asked me accompany you instead” replied Yoshie “You have the receipt?”

“Yeah” Fuuto rummaged his ragged dark jeans, and then to his black leather jacket pockets, finally he found the white piece of paper “Sorry, I must’ve forgotten where I put it”

“No problem” she said as she motioned for them to start moving “Let’s go”

Fuuto nodded as he walked beside her, unknowing of the girl’s undying affection towards him. The snow seemed to be piling up more, and the surrounding crowd also begun to decrease. Everyone must’ve retreated back to his or her home after seeing the rapid falling of the snow. However there were still some that lingered on that afternoon, loitering around the snowy streets of Tokyo.

“Nee, Fuuto…” said Yoshie.

“What?” said Fuuto.

“Are you planning on entering college any time soon? You already graduated high school”

“I don’t really have the money to enter college, so I’ll just stay a rounin”

“Then do you have a job already?”

“I applied for a part-time job at a convenience store. The salary would be enough to get me by”

“Don’t your parents have a say against this?”

“…not really” Fuuto began to walk faster, as if avoiding the Yoshie’s previous question about parents. She had then noticed the slight change in atmosphere when she asked him about his parents. He must be hiding something that he didn’t want to talk about.

“What’s the matter?” asked Yoshie.

“It’s nothing” he said coldly this time without even glancing at her.

“Hey, is it something you don’t want to talk about?”

“Not really”

“Then tell me!” she said persistently.

“I don’t feel like it”

“Eh…I bet you ran away from home didn’t you?” Yoshie began to tease him “You heartless kid…”

“Shut up…” he whispered so lowly as he stopped walking. Yoshie didn’t hear this, but she stopped in her tracks and looked back at her friend.

“What’s wrong?” she asked him.

“I said, shut up!” he heightened his voice so loud that even the people passing by could hear him. They stared at the two as if they were two lovers having a quarrel. “Don’t go on blabbing things you don’t know of! Damn it Yoshie…” He slowly walked away from her without looking back “Let’s go”

Yoshie had a sudden shot of guilt build up on her. She had hit him in his most sensitive spot, and she didn’t know about it. This was the first time she had ever seen him so angry. Whatever happened or is happening to Fuuto right now might’ve had something to do with his parents if it made him this angry to talk about it. Silence preceded their togetherness, although Yoshie wanted to apologize, something inside her didn’t want to.

I don’t see any reason why I should I apologize. I know I hurt him in some way, but I don’t know just how in what way I would’ve caused him to go ballistic on me like that. Hmph! Whatever, I don’t feel like apologizing, all I did was ask. Yoshie’s pride just never ceased to amaze anyone. Unless she thought there was a reasonable excuse to say sorry, she wouldn’t even mime the word. But for now, bringing it up to Fuuto didn’t seem like a wise decision at the moment.

After a few minutes, they had already reached the guitar store where Takayuki left his guitar. There were several guitars, basses, and instruments displayed in the front window. A black sign with white letters was hung on top of the door, which read ‘Guitar Fix’. Yoshie entered before Fuuto and both of them waited in front of the counter, which was seemingly empty. Seeing as there was no one around, Yoshie called out to whoever was in the store, however the only reply she got was a “Please wait”. Fuuto looked around the guitar area and Yoshie seemed to be going through some piles of old records near the counter. Each of the types of instruments was displayed according to their own family. A few moments passed a scruffy looking old man with a receding hairline came out of a door behind the counter. His dark blue eyes could be seen from behind his rectangular glasses, which sat right above his nose. He wore a green pair of sweat pants, which could be seen below his matching jersey jacket.

“Uhm, excuse me, but we’ve come to claim a guitar that was refined here?” Yoshie motioned Fuuto to show the man the receipt, and he did accordingly without even going near Yoshie as he stood two feet away from her.

“Let’s see…” mumbled the old man “Oh yes, Hanamoto-kun, a very talented young man. Funny though, why did he ask you two to claim it?”

“He had something he needed to attend to so he asked the two of us to come over instead” replied Yoshie.

“Ah, I see. That Hanamoto-kun always has his guitar checked here, and I give it to him at a cheap price. He seems to be very enthusiastic about his band…say, would you two be part of that band he’s in?” the old man seemed to glow as he rummaged through the guitars which were leaning on the wall behind the counter.

“Uhm, actually we are. I’m the vocalist, Taniguchi Yoshie. And this is our bassist…”

“…Takahashi Fuuto, nice to meet you” said Fuuto, cutting Yoshie short when she was about to say his name. He bowed his head and Yoshie did the same after the old man turned back to them, holding Takayuki’s guitar, which was black.

“I’m Tatsuga Obata, nice to meet you too” Obata placed the guitar on the counter and wiped it with a piece of white cloth “This one is Hanamoto-kun’s second guitar to be precise. He bought it yesterday, he didn’t tell me why, but he seemed pretty happy about it”

“He didn’t mention getting a new guitar to me…” said Yoshie.

“Well, it doesn’t matter now does it” Obata placed the guitar in a black case and handed it to Yoshie, who swung it over her shoulder.

“Thanks, Tatsuga-san” said Yoshie as she and Fuuto headed out the door.

“Take care you two!” said Obata.

It was already 1:45 p.m. when Yoshie and Fuuto left Guitar Fix. They both stopped walking once they were a good distance away from the store. Both of them looked like they wanted to say something, but it seemed like nothing would come out. Yoshie opened her mouth to talk, but Fuuto got ahead of her and said, “You want to go ahead to the studio?”

“Eh…? Oh yeah, sure” said Yoshie. After this question, neither of them seemed to want to continue a conversation. They just walked silently together, not even bothering to look at each other despite the long and distant silence.

Maybe I should apologize…Looking back, I was the one at the wrong, but I don’t think now is the right time…maybe when we get to the studio instead, then it’ll be more comfortable to talk with him alone.

Yoshie and Fuuto arrived at the studio, only to find that no one was there yet. It was 2:02, it seemed that Kaijin and Takayuki might be coming a little later. Yoshie took off her trench coat and placed it on a chair near the door, Fuuto placed his jacket on the chair right beside where Yoshie placed hers. His pale violet shirt had black tribal markings in the middle, Yoshie didn’t see this when he had his jacket on. Fuuto took out his bass from his guitar case and plugged it into one of the amplifiers, as he did so he started to tune it, not even looking back at Yoshie, who seemed to be looking over a few lyrics. She would glance at his back from time to time, wishing that he would start a conversation. Unfortunately he didn’t seem like the type who would start a conversation, this Yoshie realized when she looked back and remembered that he had never started a conversation on his own before.

She wanted this silence to end, she knew she had hurt him somewhere painful so it just sounded just that she would apologize. Just as she was about to open her mouth, the door to the studio flew open and Takayuki and Kaijin entered, both looking extremely giddy. Kaijin immediately took off his dark emerald green jacket and placed it on top of Yoshie’s trench coat.

“Hey! I have some great news!” said Kaijin “I think I’ve found a manager!”

“Are you serious?” exclaimed Yoshie.

“He’s serious” said Takayuki who was placing his onyx snow coat on the same chair as Fuuto’s “Tell ‘em Kaijin”

“Okay, I sent our demo-video to one of the new music agencies I found out about, Asahi Productions. One of the people there called me up on my cell phone last night and told me that a person from that agency would be coming over here at three to check us out. If he likes what he sees then he’s gonna consider us!”

“No way! Kaijin actually did a good job!” said Yoshie.

“You shut up! Besides, I know all of you are pretty much amazed by the fact I was able to do something as good as this”

“Don’t get too full of yourself moron”

“What? I do a good job and I don’t even hear a ‘thank you’?”

“Fine, since this is kinda big, THANKS SO MUCH JIN-KUN!” Yoshie tackled Kaijin from behind his neck as he tried to pry her off.

“Get off of me Yoshie! Takayuki! Get her off!”

“Hai, hai…hey Yoshie, c’mon you’re strangling the poor guy”

“Oh c’mon, I was just having a bit of fun!”

“Ano…” said Fuuto as all attention was turned to him all of a sudden “…do you know who’s gonna be coming later?”

“Yeah, he said his name was Shikita Taro or something like that…anyway, anything you want to say Fuuto?” said Kaijin.

“…you have some lipstick on your pants”

Sure enough there was a lipstick marking on the thigh of Kaijin. He quickly rubbed it off in embarrassment and walked behind the drums. Yoshie looked at him suspiciously.

“It was Sakura last night wasn’t it?” she asked.

“No it was Sachiko…hey!” exclaimed Kaijin.

“Baka…”

“Anyway, what song do you guys want to perform later?” asked Takayuki.

“Any song would be fine, but the new song we played yesterday really seemed the best so far” said Yoshie “But it seems a little risky to play a song we just composed”

“What’s life without a little risk?” said Kaijin.

“I think it would be better to play songs that we have already practiced well enough” said Takayuki.

“I can see Kaijin’s point, I think that playing our new song might be really cool” said Yoshie.

“But it’s still too risky!”

“Oh c’mon Takayuki, it’s a cool song. You composed the music so you wouldn’t have too much trouble with it”

“But it still doesn’t mean we’re gonna get a good deal by just doing this”

“I think we should play that new song” said Fuuto as he stood up and walked towards the group “The lyrics and composition is better than the other songs we’ve composed so far. When we rehearsed yesterday it didn’t seem too bad”

“Fuuto…” said Takayuki.

“Besides, Yoshie’s voice sounds better when she sings her own lyrics”

Yoshie’s face showed a bright red color. It wasn’t because she was happy, but she couldn’t believe that Fuuto would say something like that to her after their previous argument. Suddenly, she began to feel even guiltier about making Fuuto angry. He was defending her opinion right now, so it seemed that there was nothing more that she could do except listen to the rest of her band mates decide on what song to play.

“Nee, Leader-san…” said Kaijin “Why don’t we just give it a shot? Shikita-san is gonna let us perform two songs anyway”

“Fine…I give up” Takayuki sighed “Seeing as we have less than half an hour left, why don’t we rehearse some a little?”

“Sounds good to me” said Kaijin as he twirled his drumsticks in his fingers, waiting for everyone to get into position. Once everyone was ready behind their spots, Kaijin counted “One, two, three, four…”

The sound of Takayuki’s guitar intro began, followed by Fuuto’s rhythmic bass and the beat of Kaijin’s drums. They let out a nice slow yet powerful sound, and this was soon followed by Yoshie’s clear voice.

My heart lingered through the shattered glass,

unknowing of the painful memories…

I would look at you but you walked away,

it stings me so and I bleed crying for sanity to

reproach me and my broken soul…

Please listen to my words slowly, and

please don’t ever forget my voice…

Waiting might’ve been an understatement

Looking away while I gaze at you is something different

Those few nanoseconds we get to have together

I treasure them until now

Listen to my voice slowly clinging to your footsteps

I know that you don’t see those forgotten notes

Those were the letters I forgot to put in your locker

I secretly wished that you would accidentally read them

Waiting might’ve been an understatement

Looking away while I gaze at you is something different

Those few nanoseconds we get to have together

I treasure them until now

If telling you I loved you meant breaking apart,

I would rather have spent my days seeing you in the distance…

Yeah…oh…in the distance baby…”

When one would look at them, they would seem to be totally different people whenever they began to play. Yoshie, Kaijin, Takayuki, and Fuuto would give off the impression of being cool and fierce musicians who couldn’t care what would happen, as long as they could play to their hearts’ content. When they played, Yoshie seemed to forget about her feelings for Fuuto, all she could imagine were the bright stage lights and the crowd’s screaming applause.

All of a sudden, a knock came from the other side of the door. Kaijin immediately jumped from his seat and leapt towards the door. Everyone else just waited patiently and began to hope for the best. When Kaijin opened the door, they saw one of the most sophisticated looking young businessmen they had ever seen. The man’s smooth dark amber hair was neatly combed even though his bangs were a little messy. His fair skin was radiant even under the cold weather, not to mention his gorgeous slanting brown eyes. His clothes were a little informal, but he showed it off pretty well. He had a dark scarlet shirt underneath a black office jacket. His pants were merely dark gray jeans that showed off his long masculine legs, and his dark black boots could be seen as well. He smiled kindly at the group and greeted them.

“Good afternoon, I’m Shikita Taro. Nice to meet you all” his voice was smooth and deep, a voice almost any woman would desire in a man. His looks almost rivaled that of the other three band members.

“Hello Shikita-san, I’m Yamamoto Kaijin, the one who sent you the CD” said Kaijin as he stepped back to let the man in.

Whoa! He’s so handsome! Is this guy really a music agent?! I wonder if Kaijin just met him in a strip club… Yoshie thought.

“Oh yes, Yamamoto-kun”

“Please, call me Kaijin. These are the other members, Takahashi Fuuto”

“Hello” said Fuuto.

“…Hanamoto Takayuki…”

“Nice to meet you” said Takayuki.

“…and Taniguchi Yoshie”

“Hi” said Yoshie I can’t believe it…everyone in this room is better looking than I am right now…

“Nice to meet you all” said Shikita as his attention turned to Yoshie “You look a lot prettier in person than in the video, Taniguchi-san”

“Eh? Really?” she replied trying to keep her calm “You don’t need to call me ‘Taniguchi-san’, it makes me sound old…Yoshie is fine”

“Oh I forgot to mention” said Kaijin “Fuuto and I have already graduated high school. Only Takayuki and Yoshie haven’t”

“Really? How old are you guys then?”

“I’m 20, Fuuto is 19, Takayuki is 17, and Yoshie is 16 going on 17”

“You guys are pretty young, that’s a good thing to be able to start young”

“Oh I see, that’s good then” said Takayuki.

“I’d like to see you play now if you don’t mind” he said as he sat down on a nearby chair. Before sitting down, he took out a video camera, which he placed on a tripod right in front of the band “Standard procedures”

“Okay, no problem” Kaijin moved back to his spot behind the drums. He looked to Takayuki, the guitarist smiled and nodded. Everyone else did the same action. Kaijin clapped his drumsticks four times, after this; the band had begun to play. The powerful vocals once again began to ring around the studio. The people who passed by the studio room even began to stop and listen to the music on the other side of the door.

Shikita examined them all closely, one by one without taking his eyes off them. However his eyes seemed to be hovering over Yoshie the most. A sly grin reproached his face as he looked towards the lead singer. It didn’t seem like he was merely interested in the band. After they finished playing, Shikita stood up and applauded them “Good job everyone” he said.

“Good work” everyone said simultaneously.

“I shouldn’t be saying this so early but, I can assure you that our production might just have a spot for your band in our records”

“Are you serious?!” exclaimed Yoshie as she approached him.

“Yes. That was pretty impressive” he replied.

“Alright! We did it!” she said as she leapt on Takayuki’s back.

“He-hey! Yoshie! Quit it!” despite Takayuki’s cries, Yoshie just kept wildly shaking Takayuki from behind. Fuuto on the other hand, just sat down nearby and lit a cigarette. He would usually do this when he saw there was nothing to do. Kaijin stood up from behind the drums and walked towards Shikita.

“Thanks a lot for coming over Shikita-san” said Kaijin.

“It wasn’t a problem, really” he said as he packed the video camera and tripod into his brown carrier bag “I’ll tell you what happens in three days, enough time for our company to talk this thing out. In the meantime, you guys can just sit back and relax”

“Sure, no problem”

“Thanks a lot Shikita-san!” Yoshie cheered as she locked Takayuki in a headlock “I can assure you though that you won’t have any doubts once you decide to take us in!”

“Is he adopting us or something?!” said Takayuki as he managed to break free from Yoshie’s grip “Do you mind if I get your cell number? You can contact me instead of Kaijin”

“And what does that mean exactly?!” exclaimed Kaijin.

“Oh c’mon, Takayuki is the band leader…I’d rely more on him actually” said Yoshie.

“What was that-?!”

“Here you go…” Shikita and Takayuki had been ignoring the fight between the two as they exchanged cell phone number. When they had finished, Shikita turned to Yoshie, who was still busy fighting with Kaijin.

“Do you mind if I have yours too?” he asked.

“Eh? Uhm, sure…” Yoshie took out her cell phone and exchanged number with Shikita. She found it pretty odd, but she shrugged it off anyway. Shikita left, promising them a sure fire contract with their agency soon. Although it was strange that Shikita had everyone’s number except Fuuto’s, but no one brought it up since Fuuto didn’t have a cell phone anyway. After that, they all went out to the usual ramen restaurant they would go to, considering that it was pretty cheap there. They went there after practicing a little and it was already 6:30 when they finished in the studio. While they sat down and waited for their food, Takayuki brought up the topic about Shikita.

“You know, Shikita-san seems really nice” he said.

“Yeah, I know. Where’d you meet him anyway Kaijin?” asked Yoshie.

“Oh, well I met him a few weeks ago at a club…”

“Somehow that doesn’t surprise me…” sneered Yoshie. However Kaijin continued, ignoring Yoshie’s sly comments.

“…anyway, we talked there and I told him about us. I gave him our demo CD a week later”

“I don’t trust him” said Fuuto. His negative comment sent a sudden silence to the group. Nobody knew what to say afterwards, but Kaijin broke the ice and said “What’s wrong with you? I don’t see anything about him worth hating”

“He’s right Fuuto” said Takayuki “What makes you say you don’t trust him?”

“There’s just something about him I don’t like. He just seems too nice to us, and I noticed that he has been looking at Yoshie a lot”

“What’re you talking about Fuuto?” said Kaijin “Of course he’d look at her, everyone would usually look at the vocalist when watching a band”

“Not that, a while ago it was Takayuki who offered his cell phone number. He himself asked Yoshie for hers, he didn’t even bother asking if I had one”

“Maybe he forgot” said Kaijin. At that very moment, his cell phone began to ring, he picked it up and said “Hello?”

“Kaijin-kun…” the voice belonged to Shikita “I forgot to ask for Takahashi-kun’s number, do you mind giving it to me?”

“Ah, Shikita-san, sorry but Fuuto doesn’t have a cell phone” he said.

“Oh sorry to bother you then”

Click! Kaijin flipped his phone closed and put it back in his jacket pocket. He looked at Fuuto seriously and said “How’s that? He called me saying he forgot to ask for your number”

“That doesn’t prove anything!” Fuuto half-screamed. But he calmed down a little and stood up “Excuse me…I’m gonna go get a smoke…”

He walked away from the staring eyes coming from the other customers. The three members of Violet Rose watched him walk away with their mouths agape. It was strange for him to get angry like that all of a sudden. Yoshie stood up and walked after him. When she was already at the door, Kaijin stood up “That idiot…” however before he could even stand up, Takayuki tugged at his arm and told him to sit back down.

“What?!” exclaimed Kaijin.

“Leave them…” said Takayuki calmly. Kaijin then sat back down and stared at him.

“You know she might get swept away by him one day”

“Then would it make her happy if I took her?”

Yoshie looked for Fuuto at the entrance of the restaurant, however he didn’t seem to be there. She cursed, but then she heard someone clicking a lighter nearby. Following the sound, she was certain that it had to be Fuuto. The clicking came continuously, and sure enough he was leaning behind a telephone pole, trying to light a cigarette stick, which just didn’t seem to want to light up.

“Hey, are you alright?” she asked him.

Che…what do you care?” he said as he threw his lighter aside. A vein popped on Yoshie’s head as he said this.

“What do you mean ‘what do I care’?” she said menacingly “Of course I care! You’re a dear friend to me!”

“You wouldn’t understand…” he began to walk away from the scene, but then Yoshie grabbed his arm.

“Then help me understand!”

“This has nothing to do with you!”

“Well then I’ll make it so it does!” Fuuto seemed to be silenced with this last line. He calmed down a little and leaned on a nearby wall, and then he slid down, lowering his head.

“I just don’t want the same thing happening again…” he whispered. Yoshie looked at him with a worried face and sat down beside him.

“You wanna talk about it?” she asked him. He didn’t reply nor did he budge from his position. The lighter he threw away a while ago was sitting in front of Yoshie. She took it in her hand as she took Fuuto’s hand and placed it there.

“I have no idea what happened in your past, and it probably doesn’t have anything to do with me, but you should know, we’re still friends and I’d still care about you no matter what” the coolness in her voice didn’t disappear. She didn’t want to seem weak nor desperate, all she wanted to do was be there for the one she loved. Ten minutes passed and still Fuuto said nothing, but Yoshie remained patient because she had a feeling leaving him alone right now just didn’t seem like the right thing to do.

“When I was a kid…” he began “…my parents always loved me, they cared for me very much. That’s what I thought anyway. My mother cared for me, but my dad, he was a different case. I was only twelve when it happened…”

Seven years ago…

Fuuto had just come home from his guitar lessons. He was truly grateful for his parents, so he learned a song that he promised to play for them. When he entered the house, he seemed really happy. He was about to announce his arrival when he heard his parents talking in the living room. Thinking he could surprise them, he snuck by the passage towards the living room, but he stopped when he heard what his father was saying.

“…like I said, Fuuto can well off be on his own. Honestly I don’t see why I even bothered nurturing him. He’s not that smart and he doesn’t seem to have any other talent besides that stupid guitar of his”

“What the matter with you Genma?!” his mother bellowed out “He’s your son!”

“Listen Mako, I never cared about the boy. Putting up this fatherly act for him was for you, I don’t intend to have him really”

“Then why in the first place did you marry me?!”

“Because I lusted for you, eventually I came to love you, but I never imagined we’d have a child” he said “But seeing as we can’t see the same cloud, I’ll send in the divorce papers”

“Wait! Genma!” she approached him from behind, but he pushed her away until she fell on the floor, looking at her in disgust.

“If you can’t love only me, then I’ll forget we even loved each other”

“But, Genma…”

“Shut up! Stop saying my name you old hag…” he spat on her face, then bent down at her level “Since this is the last time we’re going to see each other, I met as well make the best of you…”

“Wa-wait…Genma…what are you doing? Stop it…”

“Mm…” he wouldn’t listen, he began to unbutton her blouse while she screamed in protest. Fuuto could no longer stand another minuet of this. He snuck up from behind and hit his father with a nearby vase. The moment it made contact with his father’s head, it smashed to pieces, allowing blood to trickle down his head. Genma looked to his attacker and lunged at him, Fuuto hit the ground with a thud as his father began to strangle him.

“Look what you did to daddy Fuuto…” his father mocked him “Once I get rid of you and your mother, I’m going to get all your money and run away from here…yeah, I’m gonna blame this all on a robber…”

“Y-you…bastard…” Fuuto coughed. His hand came into contact with a shard of the broken vase, he clasped it tightly in his hand and thrust it into his father’s neck as blood sprayed out from his body. The only thing that could be heard from the background, was his mother’s ear-piercing screams as he watched his mother fall to the ground in her own pool of blood which came from her chest.

That was the end of Fuuto’s story.

“The police came a few moments later” said Fuuto who was still maintaining the same position “I explained to them what happened, but they didn’t let me off that easily because I still killed my father…And because of that, they had several suspicions about me, so until now, that case remained unsolved. So at school I was ignored and unwanted, even in my neighborhood, because nobody wants to be near a criminal…”

Yoshie could barely believe what she was hearing; her eyes were looking at his pitiful feature. He looked like a child crying for his parents.

“Shikita…he gives off the same vibes as my father. Someone who would seem so nice, but then after a while stab us in the back” he began. He reminisced the sly smile he saw on Shikita’s face when he looked at Yoshie, but he didn’t bring it up.

“I can’t say that I understand how you feel because I don’t” said Yoshie.

“So now you probably don’t want to come near me again do you?”

“Why’s that?”

“Because you wouldn’t want to be near a person who willingly killed his own father. When I killed him, I did it to kill, not to protect myself, but to kill…so now what do you think of me?”

“…what’s in the past is in the past” said Yoshie “You may have a pretty tainted life, but it’s not like I could change it”

Fuuto looked up to her this time, however she seemed to be looking up at the snow that had begun to fall once more. “To me, it doesn’t change anything. You did what you had to do” she said “You’re still the same Fuuto to me” The look in his eyes changed. Normally, someone would say something like ‘I understand how you feel….’ or ‘You’re a monster!’ and other things as well, it was strange how Yoshie could accept this so lightly. He smiled at her and said “You’re weird”

“Looks like you’re back to normal” she said as she hit him from behind his head.

“Ow! What was that for?”

“For talking about this only now” she said as she stood up and held out her hand to him, smiling at him warmly “There’s no telling what happened then could happen now, because this I can assure you, I would never do anything to hurt you”

Fuuto’s eyes widened in surprise as she said those kind words to him, he began to feel something stir inside of him. Never in his life had someone ever treated him this kindly after hearing his past. He smiled gratefully and took her hand as he stood up, looking down at her.

“You’re something else” he said as they walked back to the restaurant together, subconsciously holding each other’s hands. Little did they know that there was someone listening to their conversation in the shadows, and this someone, seemed to have an evil grin plastered on his face.

As Yoshie and Fuuto walked together towards the restaurant, Yoshie began to say a silent thought in her mind. I’ll never forget that spot where we sat together, even though it may seem small, it’s something I will treasure forever. God, please, don’t make me let go of this person holding my hand.

Verse 1: “A Simple Prologue”

December 2nd, 2007 by escaflownelover

It was not so long ago when I joined a band; it feels like it was just yesterday when everything in my life began to take a turn. However, I still don’t know whether it was for the better or for the worse, but whichever one it was, I know that I could still be happy despite all those painful moments in my life. There was never a moment in my life that I wished for a better life, because the life I have now is the best I could think of.

Seven years ago.

My name is Taniguchi Yoshie, people mostly call me Yoshie though. I’m sixteen and I’ll be seventeen this December 25th, which is coming in no less than three months. I live with my older brother here in our three-bedroom apartment house. Our parents work overseas, my mother is a flight attendant and my father is a business man so we’re living a pretty decent life. However I wouldn’t like to brag or anything, but I guess our family is a little in the upper class I guess. My brother, namely Taniguchi Yuuki, is studying in Toudai University. Unlike him, I’m not all that intelligent, however I have been gifted in something that allows me to stand out. I’m the lead vocalist for my band, Violet Rose. The other members are Takahashi Fuuto, Yamamoto Kaijin, and Hanamoto Takayuki. Yamamoto Kaijin is the drummer of our band, he looks very American, however he’s only half. He is very good-looking so he’s extremely popular with the girls, which can expected from him because he’s a huge playboy. Hanamoto Takayuki is my old childhood friend, and right now he seems to be my only friend at school. He’s our lead guitarist and he writes the music for most of our songs, while the rest of us write our own lyrics. Because of his responsible characteristic and since he was the one who started the band, he would be considered our leader. Lastly, Takahashi Fuuto, he’s the band’s bassist as well as our silent character, also my first love. I don’t know much about him since he doesn’t talk too much about himself. All I know is that he moved to our town a few years ago and he lives alone for some reason I don’t know of. We’re a punk band, although we’re not very violent and loud like most bands. I don’t know how to describe it, but I guess we have our own style. I guess now would be a good idea to start the story.

Morning came upon the small and quiet city. Although the sun might be out, the cold coming from the near winter would give a person the impression it would still be nighttime. Taniguchi Yoshie tossed and turned in her bed as she tried protest against the endless ringing of her alarm clock. Her body felt limp against the soft white covers of her bed, coming out of the warm bed and into the cold wind felt very uncomfortable considering her sleep felt really good at the moment. Then came a loud bang from her door, Yuuki had just burst through and immediately removed the covers from Yoshie. She winced a little, but she still protested to stand up from her bed.

“Hey, when do you plan to wake up?” he said in a cool tone of voice. The annoyance in his bright blue yes could be seen from underneath his long unkempt bangs. He and Yoshie shared the same eyes, but their hair color was very different for his was a shade of amber and hers was a dark shade of black.

“Just five more minutes…” Yoshie moaned from her pillow “Mm…”

“I can’t believe you made it up to high school” Yuuki muttered from under his breath “You do realize you only have less than half an hour to get ready right?”

On the words ‘half and hour’, Yoshie shot up from her bed with a look of shock on her face as she did so. Her hand grabbed her alarm clock, which was still ringing, and nearly screamed when she saw the time, 7:32 a.m., and her classes starts at 8:00 a.m.

“Ahh!!! Onii-chan! Why didn’t you call me any earlier?!” she screamed as leapt up from her bed and quickly began to rummage through her messy closet.

“I have been! You were just so freaking stubborn!” he yelled as he watched his sister go into the bathroom “There’s breakfast on the table downstairs if you still have time” he said as he left her room and closed the door behind him.

Yoshie was hurriedly taking a shower as she tried to withstand the cold water pressing down her skin. Curse that brother of mine! University students get to have it so easy…I can’t wait until I graduate high school, then I won’t have to wake up so early. Her complaints seemed endless. The moment she got out of the shower, she put on her school uniform, which consisted of a white long-sleeved polo shirt underneath a black blazer. Her skirt, which lay right above her knees had a dark blue pleat pattern on it, a black winter coat and white leggings covered this. She looked into the mirror and saw that her long elbow length hair was a mess. She quickly tied it into a high ponytail behind her head and put on her usual six earrings, three on each ear.

She dashed downstairs and found her brother sitting down on one side of the wooden six-person table. His short amber-colored hair was pretty well groomed now as he sipped his coffee reading the newspaper in his scarlet robes.

“Good morning stupid” he said sarcastically not even glancing at his sister “You’re up early”

“Shut up will you!” she said as she trudged towards her seat and hurriedly ate her breakfast. When she finished she walked towards the door and put on her winter boots.

“You have band practice tonight right?” her brother asked her.

“Yeah, why?” she asked as she stood by the door.

“There might be heavy snow tonight, so if you can’t come home you could sleep over at one of your friends houses” he said calmly.

“No problem” she said as she opened the door “Jaa nee!”

With that, she left and ran in the snow.

“That idiot…” Yuuki muttered.

Yoshie let out a small sigh as she sat down on one of the seats in the train. The train seemed a little less crowded today, so it was pretty easy to get a seat. Her school, Minamoto High School, was three stops away from her house, so it would be a pretty short trip. She was hurrying so much this morning that she left the house with twenty minutes left of travel time. She let out another sigh as she switched on her cell phone, looking through the mail. There was one message in her inbox, it was a small greeting from Takayuki which said “Good Morning”. A small smile escaped her lips as the train stopped on the second to the last from school. Takayuki had entered the train, panting. It looked like he was late in waking up too. Sometimes Yoshie wondered how he had the time to greet people on his phone. He turned around and saw Yoshie smiling at him as she waved lightly.

“Hey” she said.

“Hey” Takayuki waked towards her and sat in the empty space beside her, putting down his guitar beside him “Looks like we both woke up late today”

“Looks like it” said Yoshie coolly. She and Takayuki have been at the same school for a very long time, however it looked like Yoshie had no other friends besides Takayuki. Whether it was because she too dependent on him or whether she just wasn’t that sociable, she was still glad that at least Takayuki was still her friend.

“Hey, are you gonna go for a university?” asked Takayuki.

“Hm, maybe…I’m not so sure. Besides I’m not that confident in my academic skills. What about you?”

“I’m not so sure either” he replied as he took out a piece of paper “Here”

“What’s this?” asked Yoshie as read what was written on it “Hey, this is the new song we were working on, you finished it?”

“Yeah, I made a separate copy for Fuuto and Kaijin, that’s your copy” he said “The lyrics you wrote were pretty good”

“Of course they were” she said coolly.

“You didn’t need to be so frank”

“Well you said they were, and I thought they were pretty good too” she said as she browsed through the notes and lyrics “Your scoring is getting pretty good too”

We are now reaching Minamoto High School…Minamoto High School…” a female voice echoed through the train as Yoshie and Takayuki stood up.

“Let’s go” said Takayuki as he stood up, followed by Yoshie. Once the doors opened, they walked outside and headed towards school and were immediately crowded by people from their school. They weren’t as late as they thought.

“Nee Takayuki” said Yoshie as she placed the piece of paper into her pocket “Has Kaijin found a manager yet?”

“Nope, at least not yet. He said he’ll be negotiating with someone, but he hasn’t told us anything yet” Takayuki seemed really simple looking, he had dark brown hair but there were black highlights placed randomly there. His fair skin made him look pretty handsome, but it was the piercings on his lips and ears that immediately gave the impression of his punkish background. His dark blue coat covered most of his upper torso, and the black handkerchief with a white skull on it gave a very fierce impression of him. However, it was his warm and affectionate aura that would say something else about him.

“Yeah, at least maybe having a talent agency back you up might be a little better than going through random places to find gigs”

“Hey, have you forgotten how hard I’ve worked to get our last live?”

“Alright, alright…Leader-sama” she added sarcasm to that last word as she smirked.

“Try and act a little more grateful. Besides, we’re still in high school, we have loads of time to get famous”

“But wouldn’t it be nicer to get famous earlier in our days? Once we’re famous we wouldn’t need school anymore”

“Yeah, but what about if it doesn’t work out in the end? Wouldn’t it be better if we had a back up ideas?”

“I guess I could at least aim to become a rounin” she said.

“Have some dignity will ya?”

“To me there’s nothing wrong with that, as long as I get to sing” she said with determination in her voice.

“That kinda sounds both wrong and right…but I guess if it makes you happy there’s nothing I can do about it”

“What about you? Isn’t there something you’d want to do after high school?”

“I don’t know remember?” he said “But…I guess wherever destiny takes me…that’s fine”

“Aw, how poetic” said Yoshie as she gave him a smack on the back.

“Hey! That hurt you know!”

Yoshie hastened her walking until she was a good ten feet away from him and smiled teasingly “Idiot!” Takayuki merely sighed at her childish behavior, but smiled afterwards as he watched her back run away from him into the crowd. Suddenly, he felt a little squeamish. He saw her waiting for him by the school gate. She smiled at him and said “Slow poke” He merely smiled and walked beside her into the school. Somehow, just walking beside her like that knowing how she feels about him makes it painful for him to cope with reality.

Music started to echo throughout the studio that night. Yoshie, Takayuki, and Kaijin were practicing ahead since they came early. All three of them looked completely different people once they were playing their instruments, even without their bass player they still sounded amazing.

My heart lingered through the shattered glass, unknowing of the painful memories…” Yoshie began to sing “…I would look at you but you walked away, it stings me so and I bleed crying for sanity to reproach me and my broken soul…Please listen to my words slowly, and please don’t ever forget my voice…”

Although the song was a little deep and sad, the guitar and drums stayed powerful, it was an intense sorrowful song that brought one to think of many different emotions. Once the song ended, Kaijin made a sudden exhibition on his drums, he could feel the adrenaline of the song gushing through his veins as he cheered himself on.

“Violet Rose forever!” he yelled as he finished. Kaijin didn’t look as much of a rocker as he did. His blonde-bleached hair was tied in dreadlocks and his dark skin immediately made him look like an American. “Nice job with the song you two”

“It was nothing, besides, Takayuki was the one who did most of the work” said Yoshie.

“Yeah, you’re not that good with that kind of stuff…” it was then the microphone Yoshie was holding hit him in the face. She used the chord to reach for him easily.

“Shut up you dark-skinned playboy! And what’s with those dreadlocks?! You’re starting to look more American than Japanese everyday!”

“Ow…” Kaijin moaned as he walked towards her “What?! Is it wrong to add a little more style to myself? And why don’t you act like a girl more often?”

“Fuck you!” she raised her middle finger at his face.

“Why you little…come here!” he grabbed her neck and tucked her in between his arms and rubbed her head “You lack discipline!”

“Hey! Quit it!” all of a sudden Kaijin stopped and pulled her chin towards his face.

“Maybe you need another type of discipline” he said in a sly voice.

“MORON!!!” Yoshie threw a punch at his face “Sometimes I’d like to tell Akio, Megumi, Sakura, Sachiko, and Hana about you…”

“How did you…?!”

“You tend to tell a lot of things when you’re drunk”

“You don’t have to remember everything I say!”

“Baka…” she said as the door to the studio opened, Fuuto had stepped in the room.

“Sorry I’m late…” he said as he laid his pale green knapsack on the floor by the door. A few snowflakes could be seen on his hair and shoulders, which he quickly rubbed off as he took off his black leather jacket, revealing a white long-sleeved shirt underneath. Yoshie and Takayuki were still in their school uniform though, and Kaijin was wearing a simple black shirt with a pair of jeans.

“Hey Fuuto, here’s a copy of the new song” said Takayuki as he handed Fuuto the piece “We started practicing it already, we’re taking a break right now, so maybe you could practice it for a while”

“Sure, thanks” he said as he took out his scarlet bass and began tuning it. He sat down on one side of the room as the rest of the band began to talk about what food to buy. Yoshie would glance in Fuuto’s direction once in a while, but his attention seemed to be concentrated on the piece he was playing so he didn’t quite notice her glancing at him.

Just by glancing at him like this, it feels as if we were in two separate world, separated by an invisible barrier I can’t break into…Yoshie began to drift off into her thoughts. She has always wanted to become closer to him and talk to him as casually as she did with Takayuki and Kaijin, hell she still called him by his last name while he calls her by her first name. She just couldn’t bring herself to call him by his first name because she didn’t feel like they were close enough, but knowing that he knew her existence was fair enough.

“Oi Yoshie” said Kaijin “Takayuki and I are gonna go buy something to eat, want anything?”

“Just get me something warm, it’s freezing!” she said.

“Sure” replied Takayuki as he and Kaijin exited the room. It was then that Yoshie noticed she was alone with Fuuto. Outside the door, Kaijin was talking with Takayuki.

“Why did you leave them alone?”

“Is there something wrong with that?” asked Takayuki innocently as they walked towards the snack dispenser.

“Takayuki, it’s really obvious” said Kaijin “Why don’t you take her already?”

“Because…” the drinks began to fall as Takayuki bent down “…in her eyes, she doesn’t see me”

Back in the studio, Yoshie was debating with herself whether or not she should approach Fuuto. I want to talk to him, but I don’t want to look like an idiot while doing so…damn it but what if I forget what to say! Shit, why can’t I ever talk to him normally, I can with Kaijin and Takayuki…

“Hey, Yoshie” Fuuto called.

“Ye-yeah?” Yoshie said as she tried to maintain her posture.

“Could you tell me how this part is sung?” he asked her as he motioned her to come over. Yoshie agreed and sat next to him. The room suddenly looked smaller, the clean cream-white walls had those noise-proof systems around them so it would be impossible to hear anything from the other side of the room. A small blush could be seen on Yoshie’s face as she sat down on the chair next to Fuuto.

“Which part?” she asked him.

“This one…” he pointed to the part in the end of the song.

“Hmm…it goes like…If telling you I loved you meant breaking apart, I would rather have spent my days seeing you in the distance…” she sung melodiously. Yoshie originally wrote the lyrics of the song, and she had only Fuuto in her mind when she wrote every letter of the song. Somehow all of her unsaid words for Fuuto were always embedded in a song. Whether Fuuto had noticed or not, she didn’t care. The seemed to be no reason why she should tell him, because she was afraid it would ruin the healthy relationship they have now.

“Yoshie, I just noticed something…” said Fuuto “How come most of the songs you write are depressing?”

“Are they? I never really noticed” she said as her blush increased Damn it! Keep calm…keep calm…Suddenly, she felt Fuuto touch her forehead as he said “You’re kina red, you have a fever?”

Yoshie looked at him with embarrassment written all over her face. Fuuto looked at her so nonchalantly, it kind of annoyed her that he seemed to be so calm in this kind of situation when she was as nervous as hell. Her hand moved his away from her face, she put her usual prideful look on her face as she said “I’m alright Takahashi-kun, you don’t have to worry about me”

“Oh okay, sorry” he said as his attention turned back to the song, but he eventually stopped “Why do you only call me by my last name?”

“Eh?” Yoshie was surprised by his sudden question “Why do you ask?”

“Nothing, I’m just curious”

It occurred to her that whenever the band was together or when she was with someone else or even with Fuuto himself, she would often call him by his last name. Everyone else she knew she would call them by their first names. Maybe he was starting to feel a little left out of her loop, or maybe because he felt that she didn’t take notice to him. It was this side of herself that she hated so much, her indecisive and shy side which she tries so desperately to hide. Because she liked Fuuto so much she had been too shy to even talk to him. Sometimes she could so much of an idiot.

“So, do you want me to start calling you Fuuto instead?” she asked.

“Whatever suits your liking” he said as he began to play the whole song on his bass.

“Alright then, Fuuto”

It was moments like this that Yoshie wished she could just tell Fuuto how she felt about him. However there was always this nagging feeling at the back of her head saying that there would be other times. When the time comes that she would have to tell Fuuto, she wanted it to be special or spontaneous. Today just didn’t seem like the right day. Besides, there were more important things to her than being with Fuuto. Her entire reason for joining the band was not to jump into a relationship, all she wanted to do was sing endlessly to her heart’s contents, nothing else seemed to matter when she thought of this. She would thank her good friend Takayuki for introducing her to the music world and showing her her capabilities, it didn’t matter whether Fuuto was part of the band or not, but having him in the band seemed like a double bonus.

When Fuuto finished playing, Kaijin and Takayuki had entered the room with their refreshments. It looked like Kaijin was already chugging down a can of beer as he got inside.

“Getting drunk on the job I see” said Yoshie.

“Oh shut up” said Kaijin “Hey, you guys wanna go to somewhere tonight? Seeing as it is Friday and all”

“I guess there’s nothing wrong with that. We haven’t been out in together in a while” said Takayuki “Hey Yoshie, Fuuto, wanna come?”

“I’m in” said Yoshie as she waited for a positive reply from Fuuto. He thought for a while, but then replied with a slight nod.

“Great!” cheered Kaijin. Once the group finished drinking their refreshments, Yoshie immediately grabbed the microphone and the rest of the members took their places and started to play. Yoshie began to sing the lyrics as the musical intro took place.

My heart lingered through the shattered glass,

unknowing of the painful memories…

I would look at you but you walked away,

it stings me so and I bleed crying for sanity to

reproach me and my broken soul…

Please listen to my words slowly, and

please don’t ever forget my voice…

Waiting might’ve been an understatement

Looking away while I gaze at you is something different

Those few nanoseconds we get to have together

I treasure them until now

Listen to my voice slowly clinging to your footsteps

I know that you don’t see those forgotten notes

Those were the letter I forgot to put in your locker

I secretly wished that you would accidentally read them

Waiting might’ve been an understatement

Looking away while I gaze at you is something different

Those few nanoseconds we get to have together

I treasure them until now

If telling you I loved you meant breaking apart,

I would rather have spent my days seeing you in the distance…”

After that long hard practice, they went to a nearby ramen shop, seeing as it was the only one open at ten o’clock in the evening. The group had a long and fun time together, and this ended up with Kaijin getting extremely drunk because he seemed to have taken a liking to the sake. Yoshie and the others just made fun of him, but were eventually told to go home because of the noise they were making.

“Hey, I’ll be taking Kaijin home” said Fuuto as he placed Kaijin’s arms around his shoulders. Kaijin looked to be half-asleep while Fuuto supported him.

“Hehehe…sorry ‘bout that Fuuto” said Takayuki “See you tomorrow then”

“Yeah, bye” he said to Yoshie and Takayuki as he left with a drunken Kaijin. The snow seemed to be falling hard that night, and it seemed that the wind was getting stronger too.

“Gah…looks like bad weather…” said Yoshie as she rubbed her hands together “It’s so cold!”

“Here…” Takayuki placed his yellow knitted scarf around Yoshie’s shoulders and smiled.

“What about you? You’re gonna get cold you know!”

“It’s okay, this temperature isn’t that cold to me”

“Fine…thanks” she looked at the sky as she and Takayuki started walking side by side on the sidewalk. Only a few people could be seen around the streets at this time and weather. Yoshie and Takayuki agreed that she should sleep at his place tonight because it was closer than her place. From the studio it only took a short bus ride to Takayuki’s house. The school was further away than the studio, so he would usually take the train in the morning.

At Takayuki’s house…

Takayuki lived with his parents, and they were glad to have Yoshie over any time. Yoshie’s parents and Takayuki’s parents have been friends for a very long time, it was no wonder they would both be good friends as well. They would both even sleep in the same room and in the same bed, because they both knew that they wouldn’t try anything on each other. Takayuki was in the shower and Yoshie had just finished freshening up. Yuuki called her cellphone up just a while ago, he seemed to have predicted that Yoshie would be staying at Takayuki’s that night. Yoshie was now lying on her stomach on Takayuki’s bed in his loose white shirt and her old pajamas, she seemed to be writing random lyrics with some made-up tunes in her head.

After her last rehearsal with the band, she suddenly got the nerve to write a lot of different songs in her mind. They weren’t depressing love songs, but instead they seemed to be powerful vocals and emotions all mixed up into one bundle. It was her determination to perform that was enabling her to write such amazing lyrics at that time. Her eyes averted to Takayuki’s dark blue electric guitar, which was leaning on the wall to her right. Her mind then began to flow with memories of the time she and Takayuki had spent together. It seemed so long ago that she was playing in a crib with Takayuki, she was so thankful that she had a friend as good as him.

After a few minutes Takayuki came out of the shower dressed in a long-sleeved red shirt and dark blue pajamas. Yoshie smiled as he exited and sat back up on his bed as she handed him the notebook she was scribbling on.

“What’s this?” he asked as he took the notebook. He gazed at the lyrics up and down as he waited for her reply.

“It’s a new song I wrote, whaddya think?” she asked.

“Sounds like a pretty powerful song…you seem pretty psyched up”

“Well I just wrote what was coming out of my mind that’s all”

“’I don’t have a reason to hold back, what I wanted to know back then I can just find out some other time. For now, I’ll raise my fist and show you what I’ve got…’” Takayuki read “I think I’ll find some time to write the music for this. This sounds really promising”

“Of course it does” Yoshie said in a vain sort of way. She stood up from the bed and peeked outside the window from the closed curtain. The weather seemed pretty bad, there was already a strong wind “I hope the wind dies down…” Closing the curtains once more, she headed towards the edge of the bed as Takayuki began to lay down his futon.

“Hey Takayuki, how come you don’t have a girlfriend yet? You seem to be really popular at school you know”

“I don’t need one because I’m too good for them” he said while striking a handsome pose. Yoshie glared at him and threw a pillow at him.

“Baka…maybe because they’re too good for you” she said sarcastically.

“Oh really now?” Takayuki jumped on her and began to tickle her sides.

“O-oi! Hahaha! Takayuki…!!! Hahaha!! Quit it!” she struggled. As Takayuki continued, he got pushed away hardly by Yoshie, and both of them fell off the edge of the bed, allowing the two to fall beside each other.

“Ow…you’re such a klutz” he said.

“You’re the one who wouldn’t stop being an ass!”

After a sudden silence, they both began to laugh hysterically. Yoshie was about to smack Takayuki on the shoulder, but he caught her wrist in mid-air and smirked. “You’re becoming readable”

“Hmph!” Yoshie took away her hand and walked towards the light switch “I’m gonna sleep” With that, she turned off the lights and climbed into bed wile Takayuki lay down on his futon. Yoshie had been contemplating on how her next performance should be, like how she should act and stuff. The choreography was already going through her head that time. When she sought to have a conversation with Takayuki, she reached out and nudged his seemingly sleeping figure.

“Mm…what?” he moaned as he looked at her.

“If there was someone you liked, how would you treat that person?”

“Excuse me?”

“I mean, if there was someone you really liked, but you had no courage to tell them, what makes you go on with your life?”

“Weird, when someone asks a question about confessing they’d usually say ‘How do you tell that person you liked them’” he said in a half-joking voice “But, if by some circumstance that you couldn’t tell that person you liked them because you wouldn’t want to ruin the healthy relationship you currently have, then that I’d understand”

“Yeah, it’s kinda like that”

“Well, if it were me, I’d just think that I’d be happy for them. If by telling that special someone that I liked them would come back at me negatively I’d just shut up about it and suppress it. Because, I really care about that person…”

“Wow, that was deep”

“So, is there someone you like?”

Yoshie threw a pillow at Takayuki and turned on her side. “I was just asking hypothetically!”

“Hai, hai…” said Takayuki as he threw the pillow back at her “Nee, Yoshie, I might not be able to accompany you home for the next few days”

“Eh? Why’s that?”

“Because we’re gonna be moving soon. It won’t be far away, we’re just gonna be moving houses, it’s just gonna be a little farther that’s all. So Fuuto might be the one to take you home from now on since his house is a little closer to yours”

“What?! How come you didn’t tell me this earlier?!”

“We only decided to move a few days ago! I didn’t really know the location of the house until today!”

“Jeez, you could’ve at least told me you were moving”

“I didn’t think it was that important”

“Of course it is! Some of our childhood memories are buried here!”

“It’s okay, you don’t have to worry so much”

“It just came to a bit of a shock that’s all”

“You can overreact too much sometimes” Takayuki laughed “Nee, Yoshie, if a close friend of yours told you that they fancied you, what would you say?”

“Fancied me?” she repeated slightly taken aback with her friend’s question “I wouldn’t know what to say at first, but then maybe I’d start to think about how I feel about that person. It really depends on who the person is”

“Let’s say it was for example, Kaijin”

“It’s not that I’d dump him or anything, but maybe at first I’d try to sort things out first, you know try and see what good points he has. But since we’re talking about Kaijin, I’d just tell him that I’d like to stay as friends”

Takayuki’s eyes seemed to be in deep thought after what Yoshie had just said. Yoshie immediately took notice of this and smiled.

“If there’s someone you liked you could’ve just told me straight forward”

“Baka, it’s for a friend, not me”

“Really? Who’s your friend then?” said Yoshie looking at him with utter suspicion.

“Kurokawa Hiro from class 2-B, ask him yourself” Takayuki waited for his companion’s reply, but none came. He curiously sat up and looked at the spot where she was lying down on. Sure enough, sleep had overcome her. Takayuki smiled and looked at her with his dark green orbs, adoring his friend that lay in front of him. Subconsciously, he leaned over her and placed a small kiss on her forehead.

“Eh…what did I just do?” Takayuki hurriedly laid down on his futon and placed his fingers over the spot where he had just kissed his friend. I have to suppress it…I can’t go on like this forever…He looked above him and stared at her hand, which was limply hanging over the bed. He began to gaze at it as if it were valuable treasure. Whether it was a friendly intention or a call of a lover, Takayuki gently took her hand into his own, slowly falling into slumber as the night passed.

As long as you’re beside me like this, I’ll never feel lonely. And as long as you’re happy Yoshie, I’ll do what it takes so that you can reach that happiness. Kami-sama, please, don’t ever take this away from me…

The night had not yet ended for a few souls. Kaijin was in his room, wide-awake, half-naked on the bed with a sleeping female figure beside him. His place was nothing more than a small unit in an apartment building. Unable to doze into sleep, he took out a cigarette and lit it up, passing the time away. The heat from his heater seemed to be prickling his skin as he puffed a cloud of smoke from his mouth. The female beside him placed her hand on his chest and said in a very enticing way “Come back to bed Yamamoto-kun…”

“Whatever you say, Sachiko-san…” he moved his hand up to the woman’s dark red hair and kissed her neck endlessly. Suddenly, he heard his cell phone begin to ring on one side of the bed. He had protested against the woman, who had told him to ignore the unpleasurable sound of the gadget, but in the end he had won against his promiscuous companion.

“Hello…?” Who could it be at this time of the night…?

“Yamamoto-kun?” said a masculine voice on the other end of the line “It’s me, Shikita, Shikita Taro from Asahi Agency”

“Oh, good evening sire…just a moment Sachiko” Kaijin got up from his bed and wrapped a towel around his waist as he continued to smoke his earlier cigar stick.

“I’ve just finished watching your demo CD and listening to your tracks, you’re quite impressive you know”

“I’m glad to hear that then”

“So, I’ve made a decision, is it alright if I come over to your studio tomorrow? You know, just to see how your band is?”

“Really? That’s great! Our rehearsal is at three o’clock tomorrow afternoon, is that alright?”

“Perfect, I’m free during that time. If I like what I see then I’ll be asking your group to come by my office the next day, is that fine with you?”

“Yes, absolutely, thank you so much Shikita-san”

“No problem, see you tomorrow then”

With a small click, both men switched off their cell phones. On Kaijin’s side, a huge grin could be seen on his face, complete with satisfaction and excitement as he continued to mingle with his partner. The same could be seen on the other end; however, it was neither a face of satisfaction nor excitement. A malicious grin could be seen on the face of Shikita Taro as the light from the television screen illuminated his dark brown hair and slanting brown eyes. A handsome man he was, but he seemed to be taking interest in the female found in the video of a certain musical band he was about to take action on.

The Man who met the Sun

March 28th, 2007 by escaflownelover

The man strode down along the abandoned road, silently humming his own tune to the melody of the winds blowing on his face, caressing the smoke he emitted from his cigarette. The road he traveled on was none, which was known to others, it was a road he created. The sun always hid behind the clouds whenever he walked down that road, as if hiding from him, afraid of his pain stricken smile.

Nobody knew why he hummed the same tune over and over again, as if he knew no other sounds. He never stopped in his tracks, forever looking up to the dimmed light of the sun with his blood-shot eyes. He smiled wickedly, a look on his face saying he wanted to do something horrid. But he never did, instead he hummed the same tune once more. The black over turning seasons churned in the sky, but it never seemed to reach night time. Instead a lone star could be seen between the sun and the shadow of the moon. This star seemed to be the only thing that made the man stop humming; this was the only thing that made him crunch his eyebrows in dismay.

Without warning, silver ran fell from the sky, washing out the smoke coming from his cigarette. He spat the cigar from his mouth as he continued in his journey of the unforeseen. Judging from his surroundings, there was not one form of life coming to him. He had been alone during this melancholic life. The black cloud cried the clear liquid falling from the sky, showering upon the grassy plains on either side of the road. The man stopped as he looked at the grass as if it were the most interesting thing in the world. He slowly plucked one blade from the ground and placed right in between his lips serving as a replacement for his flameless cigar.

He walked through the freezing droplets of water, looking as unfeeling as ever, ignoring the cold tears from the clouds. Just then, a small child seemed to be coming from the horizon. The little boy had golden blonde hair and eyes as empty and gray as the cloudy sky. He stared at the approaching man, with an innocent look plastered all over his face. The two males stared each other in the eye, both unwary of what the other might do to themselves. As the man neared the boy, he stopped in his tracks. The boy looked up to him, he just merely stared at the weary traveler, not knowing what to do. The man looked down to the young lad, seeing as if the boy had just crawled out of the mud and was washed off by the cold rain. The man took of his hat and placed it in on the boy’s head as his golden locks slowly began to dry. With that, the man continued along his path down the road of the unforeseen.

The rain turned to a drizzle, the drizzle turned into mist, and the mist turned into a heavy fog. Everything surrounding the man was barely visible. Everything but the road which kept him on his track. He chewed on the blade of grass in between his mouth with a slight sight of excitement brewing within him. The fog grew bigger, until the man could no longer see what was in front of him. He reluctantly thought of stopping and maybe wait for the fog to come clear, but his body told him otherwise. He continued walked in a straight line, just like then way he began his journey; confused, alone, stoic, and depressed. He nonchalantly walked through the fog, as if he knew where he was going, but honest to the bone, he did not know. All he could rely on was pure instinct to be able to get through this alone. He took one more step into the fog, which was now cleared with that one last step. In front of him, was the end of the road, which was replaced by a riverbank.

The riverbank lay next to a flowing river with crystal clear water, flowing in one direction. He stared the clear liquid for a while, engrossing himself with the thought of jumping in and feeling the water move throughout his entire body. However, this was not his purpose. He saw a small boat, fitted only for one person. He climbed into the wooden cradle, which automatically slid off the riverbank. It glided gracefully across the river, even without a guide nor a paddle. It moved on its own will. The man looked up to the sun, which now smiled at him and opened its arms to him, gently welcoming it into its warm and kind light. And for the first time in his life, the man cried as he whispered something he wished he could’ve said before in his lifetime…

Shed a Tear to the Headless

February 24th, 2007 by escaflownelover

There is no need for lies…

I am not needed in a society that doesn’t need me. I would cry and shed my own tears to their laughter. Why do we need to look like mascots, all in the same attire with fake smiles all around? Is there no place for someone who thinks of everything otherwise? Not a soul can understand how it feels to live in a society full of indifferences. If god can hear me, why is there a need to live when life can be taken so easily? In my world, nothing exists. I believe that everyone will be driven to live, but in the end fall to the ground towards nothingness. If I could be given one wish,  is that death would be the end of all…it would lead to the disappearance of one’s own soul. With this hand, I detest all that despises me, and eats away what has become of me. These hands…which are of no use.

THE MELANCHOLY OF HARUHI SUZUMIYA

What’s it about?

An effortlessly practical and down-to-earth guy on the surface, Kyon used to be fascinated by ghosts and demons and ESPers, until he found himself in high school and shelved those fantasies for stark reality. On the first day of class, he meets Haruhi Suzumiya, a beautiful and intelligent – but extremely eccentric – girl who proclaims on the first day that she isn’t interested in “normal humans”, and unless you’re a ghost, an alien, or a psychic, she doesn’t want to talk to you. Kyon finds himself strangely drawn to the girl, and winds up being instrumental in the forming of her new club (created after Suzumiya joined all the other clubs for precisely one day and abandoning them just as quickly). Their goal? Well, Kyon doesn’t know yet, but with Haruhi in charge, anything goes.

Is it any good?

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya isn’t just a clever name; this is, hands down, one of the best new shows of the season (and probably would be the best if it weren’t in such good company). The very first episode – in which we see the hilariously terrible student film Haruhi’s new club produces as its first project, complete with an equally hilarious commentary by the cameraman - sets the stage, while the “real” episode one introduces us to most of the main cast. The student film in and of itself is an absolutely brilliant satire of your average high-school-kids-with-superpowers anime series, and manages to thoroughly skewer the entire genre without succumbing to over-the-top parody. That there’s an entire series after the student film – apparently in which we see what went into the production of it – is icing on the cake.
There are a few things that make this series so special. Firstly, there’s brisk, snappy dialogue that seems as though it’d be at home in a clever American sitcom, and the pacing matches the dialogue, meaning no long slow pans over backgrounds or silent characters staring at one another to fill time (all of which slow any good high school series down to a crawl). Kyon, the lead character, provides a sarcastic narration that really brings the proceedings to life. Secondly, the animation is brilliant and fluid, with distinct character designs. Haruhi and the other female characters might look a little typical, but that hardly matters; the sheer quality of the writing eclipses any unfortunate clichés the rest of the production might dip into from time to time. Based on simply the first two episodes, start begging your favorite American licensor to pick this one up ASAP.

AIR GEAR

What’s it about?

Ikki is your average every-day guy who lives in an elaborate house with four girls. One day, he’s terrorized by the Skull Sabers, a group of punks with super-powered rollerblades called Air Trek that allow them to jump huge distances and go extremely fast. After a particularly nasty run-in with the girls, Ikki discovers a closet full of hidden Air Trek gear – it appears the ladies are part of an Air Trek group called Sleeping Forest. Strapping on a pair of the skates, Ikki takes them for a test drive, winding up at a “meeting” for Air Trek kids, and comes across a beautiful pro skater named Simca. Just then, The Department for the Counteraction of Delinquent Special Aviation Footwear Users arrives to bust up the party… and all hell breaks loose. What has Ikki gotten himself into?

Is it any good?

Let’s face it: this is a show about gangs of teenagers on super-powered rollerskates who form gangs, get in fights, and are beaten down by The Man. If this were a live-action Hollywood film, we would all collectively laugh at it and shake our heads at how far beyond the bottom of the barrel they’ve had to reach for new story ideas.
That said, it’s nearly impossible to take Air Gear seriously. The story is pretty routine – the obvious parallels to skateboard culture aside, this series (based on mangaka Oh! Great’s original manga) is your average run-of-the-mill “rookie teenager with busty friends fights the man with the aid of his awesome powers” anime. Nothing here really stands out. The characters are all quite typical and underwhelming, and there’s nothing special about the storyline.
The biggest problem with Air Gear, however, is also the biggest problem with its predecessor, Tenjou Tenge. I’m not sure what it is about mangaka Oh! Great’s artwork that causes it to lose so much in the translation to animation, but perhaps most of the charm in his stories is actually in the art, and when all that extreme detail and beautiful artistry is removed and simplified for animation, the thrill of the story goes with it. Whatever the case, Air Gear is likely to inspire unimpressed yawns, unless you’re a huge fan of the original manga, and even then it’s underwhelming.

SOUL LINK

What’s it about?

Ryouta, a cadet in the Central Military Academy, is sent with his friends Sayaka and Nao to the Space Station Aries to complete his training. There, he meets a few new people and discovers that his brother is coming to the same station, a revelation that shocks and pleases Nao.

That’s pretty much it.

Is it any good?

Boy, they’ll let anyone make a sci-fi anime series now, won’t they?

Soul Link is, far and away, one of the most amateurish anime series I’ve ever seen, complete with generic character designs, laughably bad animation and completely contrived dialogue. It doesn’t help that the show moves at a snail’s pace; if you want a show that seems to gleefully point out everything The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi gets right (at its own expense), check this show out.
It might be easier to focus on the nap-inducing story and uninteresting stock characters if the animation weren’t so embarrassing. Character movement is stilted and awkward, everyone’s off-model all the time and there are even a few poorly-drawn attempts at fanservice, including the shy lead character’s slow fall into Pretty Girl Character A’s big breasts. Even the CG looks as though the show’s animators took a time machine and traveled back to 1995 to use whatever technology existed at the time to animate the space scenes. Seriously, this stuff would look bad in an old Playstation video game. Furthermore, I refuse to believe that this show was written by professionals; it goes simply from uninteresting event to uninteresting event, clumsily introducing bland characters with bland dialogue.
I’d like to appeal to Japan for just a moment if I may: please stop making shows about space station schools where bright young military cadets learn the ins and outs of space and experience angsty teenage melodrama. They’ve become a dime a dozen, and what’s worse, most of the new ones are dreadfully boring. Find another genre. Please. I beg you.

KIBA

What’s it about?

Zedd is a troubled young delinquent who’s constantly looking for a way out of Calm, the big city he lives in; naturally, he’s called to by a distant voice, which leads him to a rift in space-time that houses another dimension. There, he learns of Shadow Casters, magic users who call upon a power named “Split” that allows them to summon monsters and magic spells to combat one another. Zedd, of course, thinks this is the promised land he’s been searching for, but what he doesn’t know is that inside his body lies the spirit of Amil Gaul, a powerful beast that could change the course of history.

Is it any good?

Good heavens, no. I’m not sure how it is exactly they managed to make a show about a delinquent kid who finds out he has magical powers boring but oh, did they. The show has a little bit of potential; the animation is quite good, the character designs are pleasant and well done, but otherwise, this is a drab, lifeless bit of often confusing shonen drama that doesn’t really appeal to any one demographic.
It’s difficult to be interested in characters like Zed, who spends all of his time in this episode brooding. It takes far too long to go anywhere and the screenwriters are assuming that we find Zed and the bland, uninspired sci-fi city he lives in to be so interesting and compelling that we don’t care about the fact that nothing at all happens in the first 15 minutes or so. Once it finally gets to the point, the result is yet another “troubled boy has powers he didn’t know about” series that fails to be even remotely creative or interesting.

.HACK//ROOTS

What’s it about?

Haseo is a brand new player in The World, a hugely popular MMORPG. Immediately upon entering the game, he’s resurrected after being attacked by assassins by Ovan, the leader of a guild calling itself the Twilight Brigade. Although he’s only a newbie, Haseo finds himself in the middle of a seemingly sinister plot – a theory aided by two player-killers who track him down and attempt to slay him once more… good thing another Twilight Brigade member is there to save him again.

Is it any good?

In the earlier installments of the .hack series, the show managed to remain compelling by limiting the number of times it referred to “The World” as being simply a game; there wasn’t a lot of jargon involved, and the entire series focused on the fact that there was an anomaly within the game rather than attempting to persuade the audience that there was something inherently fascinating about the mundane day-to-day drama found in an MMORPG. .hack//ROOTS seems to toss that notion out.
The show is beautiful, to be sure; well-animated in most spots, with impressive CG blending. The music isn’t half bad either. The real problem with this show – at least in this initial episode – is that it focuses far too much on letting the viewer know it’s all a game. The characters have extended discussions about the difference between “party” chat and “open” chat, where the map is on the player’s HUD, and warring guilds attempting to recruit new players. There’s a whole lot of obnoxious MMORPG jargon in there and the effect is not unlike reading drama on a forum about an MMORPG you don’t play, which is to say, it’s a struggle to remain interested. Still, there’s potential here; I refuse to believe there isn’t eventually going to be more to the series than this, and for .hack fans and MMORPG players alike, there’s probably a lot to enjoy here. Don’t give up on it yet, but proceed with caution.

NANA

What’s it about?

Two girls, both named Nana, meet seemingly at random on a snowed-in train bound for Tokyo. While at first glance these two couldn’t be more different – one’s plucky and naive and still appears to be in high school, and the other’s an edgy, world-weary rocker with an enigmatic past – in reality, the two seem to share a common destiny. They’re both moving to Tokyo for bittersweet reasons, following their hearts and dreams.

Is it any good?

This beautifully animated, sharply-written adaptation of superstar mangaka Ai Yazawa’s shoujo masterpiece is easily the best new show of the season, which should come as no great surprise thanks to the pedigree of the source material. The story has been altered a little bit; instead of first learning the complicated back story behind why both Nanas are moving to Tokyo, instead we’re tossed into their first meeting on the train, where they initially get to know eachother and share a beer; by the end of the episode, they’ve moved into the same apartment, which doesn’t happen until volume 2 of the manga; one assumes future episodes will catch us up on the history behind these two characters, all in due time. Frankly, the slight change of events from the manga allows the viewer to get a little more wrapped up in the story’s immediate events, which will help grabbing fans unfamiliar with the Nana storyline.
The animation is top-notch, as is the voice acting and the music (the score tends to be a little melodramatic, but hey, it’s a shoujo drama after all). It’s paced briskly, with enough story elements packed into this single episode to drag anyone into the plot. While it isn’t as flashy or as instantly captivating as last year’s Paradise Kiss, there’s a lot more potential for a much longer and more involving storyline here, and the characters – while they might initially seem a little one-dimensional – have a lot more depth and development going on than the cast of Yazawa’s previous show. All in all, this is a great animated complement to the stellar manga. If you haven’t read the comics (or are already a big fan), and can appreciate a mature, involving shoujo story, Nana is the one to beat.

OURAN HIGH SCHOOL HOST CLUB

What’s it about?

Middle-class Haruhi Fujioka is the only student at the uber-exclusive Ouran High School whose family isn’t filthy rich, and when she breaks an $80,000 vase, she’s left in the hands of the Host Club, an enigmatic group of six impossibly good-looking and ludicrously wealthy young men who mistake her for a boy. Initially they plan on putting him – er, her – to work to pay off the debt, but once it becomes clear she – er, he – is a hit with the ladies, they make her a full-time member of the Host Club!

Is it any good?

For being a wacky shoujo comedy, Ouran High School Host Club is a heck of a lot of fun to watch. Sure, it’s just a slightly tweaked, rehashed version of Boys Over Flowers, but in terms of pure entertainment, there’s a lot to like here. It’s beautifully put together; smooth animation, strikingly pleasant and distinct character designs and some of the most elaborate and gorgeous background art I’ve seen in a TV anime lately. While the story is grossly derivative and predictable, the show’s manic pace and fun characters will leave you wanting more.
There’s something about the design of this show that’s really eye-catching and unique; there’s a soft, refined quality to the art that really suits the subject matter. There’s even a catchy opening theme (with some really gorgeous animation to complement it). The characters are fairly one-dimensional and predictable, and it’s hard to overlook the sheer number of obvious similarities between this show and Boys Over Flowers, but at the same time, it almost doesn’t really matter; just sit back and enjoy it and you’ll have a grand time.

XXXHOLIC

What’s it about?

Kimihiro Watanuki leads a pretty bizarre life; it seems the kid can see evil spirits, and in turn, evil spirits seem strangely attracted to him. One day, he comes across a strange little shop owned by a mysterious witch named Yuuko, who tells Kimihiro that she’s got the solution to all of his life’s problems. The catch? Yuuko doesn’t do pro bono work, so Kimihiro gets to work off his debt to the witch before she’s willing to lend him a helping hand. What he sees during his days in her shop is decidedly strange, even for someone accustomed to dealing with evil spirits…

Is it any good?

Despite being a little slow, XXXHolic is a faithful, fun and engrossing adaptation of CLAMP’s hit manga. It’s a bit of an acquired taste; unless you’re already familiar with the tale via Del Rey’s release of the manga, this first episode might feel a little unaccessible, but there’s a lot of potential here and if the show sticks to the proper story then it’ll be a lot of fun once later episodes start getting into the real meat of it all. The manga’s lush (and somewhat bizarre) design style is translated pretty well, even if the character designs are somewhat simplified and the backgrounds might be a bit too heavy on the vague watercolors for some.
The biggest problem with this series, so far, are the characters; Yuuko is obviously the most compelling and interesting character in the show, and yet she gets comparatively little screen time compared to Kimihiro, whose role as ‘panicky milquetoast’ isn’t exactly gripping, to say the least. Hopefully, future episodes will feature a lot more of the witch and a bit less of the nerd, but the show remains entertaining regardless. It’s a lot more fun to watch than Bee Train’s adaptation of Tsubasa Chronicle, at any rate, and fans of the manga will probably like what they see.

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS

What’s it about?

Eriko has always dreamed of attending an all-girls academy; prestigious and overflowing with massively intelligent, graceful and well-mannered aristocratic girls who she can look up to. Her dream finally comes true one day when she and her two friends get accepted into an academy, but unfortunately, it isn’t all it’s cracked up to be; girls, as it turns out, can be just as vicious as boys!

Is it any good?

The first thing most people will probably do upon viewing this first episode of High School Girls is compare it to Azumanga Daioh, and they wouldn’t be wrong to do so; this thing is obviously influenced by that massively popular title and the comparison isn’t going to help this show one bit. Essentially a less funny or compelling version of Azudai, High School Girls turns down the random humor (rather, it exchanges it for “silly” rather than “wacky”) and turns up the fanservice, making this show not entirely uninteresting but, thanks to the excessive panty shots, a little too creepy.
That’s not to say the show isn’t amusing enough. The animation is serviceable the character designs are distinct enough, but in general, the girls’ personalities seem to be a little one-dimensional and uninteresting. They go on a zany adventure in this episode, and it’s easy to assume the bulk of the show will center around future zany adventures in which the girls also learn a little bit about life, love and the rules of high school. It’s all a little routine, to be frank. Regardless, this show has its audience, and its audience – people who really loved Azumanga Daioh and would like to see something similar – will probably get a kick out of it, even though the humor in High School Girls is substantially different from AzuDai. If you’re not looking for more of the same, however, High School Girls probably won’t fit the bill.

DISGAEA

What’s it about?

Pint-sized Prince of the Underworld Laharl has been asleep for two years; when he’s brought out of his slumber by an angel named Flonne, he finds his precious kingdom in total chaos! It turns out his dad, King Krichevskoy, has choked to death on some snacks; so now, it’s up to Laharl and his trusty vassal Etna to cut a swath of destruction across the Underworld and proclaim himself the new King.

Is it any good?

Based on the cult smash RPG published here in the US by Atlus, Disgaea is a somewhat fun little diversion that will make fans of the game very happy and probably alienate anyone who isn’t already in love with the source material. The jokes are pretty rapid-fire, the characters are fun and the situation is all suitably wacky, but there’s a strange sense of disconnect here. It’s all very zany and crazy and whatnot, but the show seems to be straining under the weight of its own wackiness; it’s hard to believe the series will be able to keep this up for very long without becoming tiresome.
Special mention needs to be made of the animation quality; frankly, it just isn’t very good. It’s not clear if this will be retouched for the DVD release, but as it is, Disgaea is a relatively simple-looking anime already, and the subpar animation only calls even more attention to that fact. If you’re looking for something lush and fluid, this isn’t it. However, part of the show’s charm is in its simplicity, so some fans might take pleasure in how basic everything looks; to each their own. If you were a big fan of the game, then this is already on your must-buy list if and when it comes out here in the States; otherwise, unless you’ve an unquenchable thirst for over-the-top “wackiness” and can tolerate cheap animation, you might want to give this one a pass.
